Rescuers call off Nevada mine rescue because of 'dangerous conditions'

A 28-year-old man who fell into an abandoned mine in Nevada may have to stay there until conditions at the mine allow for his rescue, officials said.

The man fell Wednesday at the Murphy Mine Complex, which dates back to 1895 and is located about 60 miles south of Winnemucca in Pershing County, said spokeswoman JoLynn Worley of the state Bureau of Land Management.

Rescuers went down the shaft but could not find him. They did, however, find him upon sending a camera down the shaft, and at 8 p.m. PT Thursday, he was alive and moving his hands.

“It appears that due to the hazardous and dangerous conditions of that shaft, the rescue efforts were stopped,” Worley said.

As of 3 a.m. Friday, the camera was still recording him. He was breathing, but there was no movement, she said.

A U.S. Navy Search and Rescue team is assisting regional authorities and the Newmont Mining Corp. in the rescue.

You are an idiot! Rule one of rescue operation is scene safety, don't make any more victims. Where you there? Do you know the condition of the victim? Do you know the hazards faced by rescue personnel? Men and Women that get into the search and rescue field are there to save people and to many times they put themselves at unreasonable risk to save people. Are you aware of the injuries sustained by rescue personnel? How dare you second guess the efforts of the on-scene searchers risking there lives and make flippant comments without all of the information. Do you know the psychological effects that an unsuccessful search and rescue has on the individuals involved and then to get comments like yours? You owe everyone involved a personal apology.

My sincerest sympathies to the family of this young man for their loss.

The young man in this story is a very close relative of mine. He passed away this afternoon in the mine where he fell. Rescuers and paramedics were certain that getting him out of the shaft would kill him because of the apparent extensive injuries, specifically to his respiratory system, and because they could not extract him lying down. Thank you to the Pershing Co NV sheriff's office, Search and Rescue team(s), U.S. Army, Navy, BLM teams, volunteers, friends and family who did everything they could.

God bless this man and his family, I have known him since I was about two years old and can not believe that this has happened. I personally appreciate the men and women who were willing to go out and help as much as they could. This is a tragic accident and is very unfortunate.

Lets just pray for the family. We have been best friends for 10 yrs and to lose this young man is devastating for his family. Instead of judging anyone, lets be thankful no one else was injured and pray for this fine family to find the strength they will need in the days to come. God bless.

Why did this story not get wider coverage by the media? HLN is the only network I saw this story on. It haunts me to think of what the young man went through before he died.
