Police chief Marisol Valles Garcia has been fired, an official in Praxedis G. Guerrero, Mexico, said Monday.
The 20-year-old criminology student made headlines when she took the reins of the police force in one of the most violent cities in the border state of Chihuahua. It's common for police officers in Praxedis to be abducted and killed.
"Marisol did not show up for work this morning as she was expected," town secretary Andres Morales said. "Since she was on a personal leave that expired today and did not reach out to us over the weekend, she now faces termination. It is now an official matter. We don't know anything about her whereabouts. Our attempts to get a hold of her during the weekend were unsuccessful."
Praxedis Mayor Jose Luis Guerrero told CNN last week that Valles Garcia was on personal leave because her 8-month-old baby was sick. He said she was expected back at work Monday.
"Marisol, in fact, still works here and she's still getting paid. She comes back on Monday," he said.
Praxedis is located about 35 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez, one of the bloodiest cities in world.

Oh! How awful. She got fired from her job instead of fired with guns. Gee whiz, I think she's better off.
The people who fired here were probably going to kill her so she did not show up that day.
Be the change you want to see in your world. Run Forest Run!!!!
Gee.....I wonder how she got that job.
That country is such a huge mess.
@Harvey: She volunteered for the position because no one else was willing to step up. Last week CNN had a story about how she is trying to see asylum in the U.S. because she's receiving death threats.
That is assuming that the cartels haven't already taken her out.
Agree with Brian Casey in these replies.
I've been to Praxedis, it isn't much of a town. The big employer left town and moved back to JZ.
They say they can't contact her. Yet they're going to terminate her after she didn't show up as planned. All this in a town where nobody else would step up to be police chief because cops keep getting killed by cartels. Gee, have they even searched for her whereabouts? She's probably dead, along with her poor 8 month old child.
Besides that, this girl at 20 is doing the job normally filled by a 20+ year law enforcement veteran. Why? Because none of the men in her town has the balls to be men. Mexicans need to make a decision: A) Take back their country. B) Continue letting cartels run the show.
The reason why she applied for this JOB was to seek asylum in the US. That was her plan, quite clever!!
JV, feel free to make such a statement when we are talking about police in the United States. This story however is about Mexico. Poor attempt to deflect attention away from the current issue.
You can say she's lucky after they f ind her.
If their attempts to get ahold of her were unsuccessful, shouldn't they be more worried about locating her than considering termination? Considering the area's violence, I think that should be the first priority.
Katie, I had the same thought you did. For all they know she and her child could be on a permanent sick leave.
My thoughts exactly.
No kidding
This concludes your lesson in Mexican respect for human life.
She's in the U.S. seeking asylum.
I agree, seems like there should be some concern that she's been kiddnapped or worse... And even if she's just hiding, I wouldn't blame anyone, let alone a 20 year old woman with a newborn baby, for running from this job.
Yes Sutemi because The United States are known for ultimate respect. Ironic, you say that Mexicans are disresectful with what is going on here!? Hello pot, meet black kettle...
You all are making big assumptions after reading 1 news article on the subject. We don't know what her attendance or performance have been like other than what CNN's saying. Maybe she's been great about it, maybe she shows up late all the time or tells the city to stick it. Who knows?
Oh you don't have to worry about her. The reason why she applied for this JOB was to seek asylum in the US, which she already got. Clever way to drain US tax payers money!! In the future, you will find more and more chicks doing this. Fast way to the USA>
You would think since they have'nt heard from her that they'd be more concerned for her safety but it is mexico and I guess the sun bakes the common sense out of every body
No one ever stood my way and stay alive.
I would imagine their first priority is "cover up her absence as innocuously as possible, just in case."
When you quote someone, it's standard practice to actually quote them, instead of making up unflattering statements and attributing them to someone you don't like.
Oh wow. Someone finally had the balls to step up to the plate and take on the job, and they fire her because she didn't show up for ONE day. Maybe they should try to get a hold of her to hear what happened first? I mean jeez, her baby WAS sick. But whatever, maybe she's better off getting fired anyway.
Yeah......what experience she must have in criminal law being 20 and all.........she's gotta be perfect for the job......
Ha! What a joke
@Hail, she may have been inexperienced but at least she had the guts to stand up and do something in one of the most dangerous places in the world.
@Hail – Pay attention. This 20 year old was the ONLY person in her town who was willing to apply for the job. Says a lot about the 'experienced' men around there doesn't it? Everyone is too scared to step up to the plate. But this tiny, inexperienced 20 year old with a child decided someone had to do it. And she did.
Even if she did run away, I think we all owe her some pretty solid respect for even trying. She was police chief in a town that's known for having police officers murdered by drug cartels.
@ Hail, i can talk to you about her bravery, but i do not think it's something you would understand.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. ~Ambrose Redmoon
It's not stepping up if she doesn't show up.
Exactly, Katie. I mean, are they looking for her? Shes just a kid for Chrissake. Just can her and be done with it?
She was not 'corrupt enough' to qualify as a mexican cop.
LMAO!
I don't blame her; she has a child to live for. Good decision.
She was probably killed by the bad guys – they've been killing government officials a lot down there.
Really Lise? Wow, genius. #winning!
How in heck does a 20-year-old become a police chief... let alone a new mother? Ridiculous.
How does a 20 year old become a police chief in Mexico? All the other candidates were probably killed off.
Because she has more balls than you.
I guess you would have to find out who she was sleeping with to get the job.
Maybe they just broke up and that's why she was fired.....and missing.
Crap hole of a country down there isn't it....
"Crap hole of a poster, aren't I?"
There, I fixed it for ya...
Because the last few people who previously held the Chief of Police position were killed/kidnapped/tortured/disappeared, and no one else actually wanted the position. But she felt she could make a difference and ran for the job (as it is an elected position, as this made headlines a few months back that she was running for the position). I don't think anyone else even ran for the job.
Not sure how she became police chief. As for the new mother question, just ask any one of her fellow countrymen. They multiple as soon and as many times as they can.
b/c she was brave enough to step-up when everyone els was afraid to run for the office. would you have run, i'll bet not.
QUOTE "It's common for police officers in Praxedis to be abducted and killed."
So instead of thinking maybe, JUST MAYBE, shae has been abducted and/or killed like many before her – They Just Fire Her! - Hmmm – Very Fishy!!
"she now faces termination"
Given the city being discussed – just losing a job isn't too bad for the word "termination"...
Umm, nobody has been able to get in contact with her? Could this be that she has been abducted or killed? I think this needs a bit more investigating than just saying she's been fired.
She ran off with Machete...
I hope you pronounced it right cause Machete don't like his name being mispronounced, he doesn't like texting either.
Maybe "She" is the leader of the "Network".
He did say that too didnt he?..."Machete doesen't text".
Hahaha, The police chief is 20 years old. Veteran on the force, let me tell ya. Was it her crime stopping career that put her in that position or her good looks?
Maybe you should go back and read the previous articles about this situation. She got the job because everyone else was scared to even apply. Rather than questioning her credentials maybe you should be applauding her bravery for stepping up when no one else would. Before you go denigrating her, you should learn some of the facts.
Brian, that story didn't say anything about why she got the job and I am not going searching for articles. Maybe you should tell CNN to give us the short version of why she was employed instead of bashing me for not article searching. I comment on what I read.
Jimmy, just because you're ignorant doesn't mean your opinion is of any value. Brian's right, if you learned a little more about the situation you would know what a fool you sound like.
Jimmy Crack – it is not anyone else's responsibility to educate you. Posting an ignorant comment was nobody else's fault but your own, so stop whining. You must be a Fox commentator or something...
Im insulting a 20 year old being a police chief. But Im the fool. You're right. Regardless of the back story she shouldn't even be in that situation, I dont care who's afraid to apply or why. But You're right, Im the idiot.. Morons.
@Jimmy Crack Corn: Stupid is as stupid posts.
wasn't she attempting to flee to the USA, in order to save her life? Personally I question her decision to take the job in the first place. Surprised she hasn't already been whacked.
