20-year-old Mexican police chief fired after failing to show up for work

Police chief Marisol Valles Garcia has been fired, an official in Praxedis G. Guerrero, Mexico, said Monday.

The 20-year-old criminology student made headlines when she took the reins of the police force in one of the most violent cities in the border state of Chihuahua. It's common for police officers in Praxedis to be abducted and killed.

"Marisol did not show up for work this morning as she was expected," town secretary Andres Morales said. "Since she was on a personal leave that expired today and did not reach out to us over the weekend, she now faces termination.  It is now an official matter.  We don't know anything about her whereabouts. Our attempts to get a hold of her during the weekend were unsuccessful."

Praxedis Mayor Jose Luis Guerrero told CNN last week that Valles Garcia was on personal leave because her 8-month-old baby was sick. He said she was expected back at work Monday.

"Marisol, in fact, still works here and she's still getting paid. She comes back on Monday," he said.

Praxedis is located about 35 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez, one of the bloodiest cities in world.

    Are you kidding me? this article starts off by saying that police officers in that area are often killed and abducted. This girl doesnt show up for work after taking a leave of abscence, they try to contact her and locate her but she has yet to respond. And as a result they fire her??? are they serious?? How about forming an investigation into the where abouts of their own team member instead of jumping to conclusions and firing her. If she is fine and just didnt bother to show, then i guess she will get what she deserves, but how do they know that is isnt lying dead somewhere?? I sure wouldnt want that on my conscience!

    C'mon people. I believe this 20 yr old is one smart cookie. Gage the Mexicans that are trying daily to gain access into our country. What a brilliant ploy. If I had an 8 month baby, I would not put myself or my family in harm's way. She orchestrated this fable to ensure permanent access to the US because we are a
    bunch of bleeding hearts. Watch for future scams like this. She is no hero–she is an opportunist and we are fools.

    Bomb them? Are you nuts? Believe it or not, the US does *not* have the right to attack any country it wants...and certainly not because there are criminals there. Never mind that, as sweet2th pointed out, it would really help if we wonderful Americans stopped buying all those illegal drugs. Jeez. You think other countries should be able to bomb us because of *our* criminals?

    And, GadgetCanada...I *did* read the article. Did you not notice that it was from 2 frickin' years ago!! Or notice that commentors provided more information about the situation...like the fact the guys who were shot had picked a fight in a strip club. Now *they* were morons.
