20-year-old Mexican police chief fired after failing to show up for work
Police chief Marisol Valles Garcia has been fired, an official in Praxedis G. Guerrero, Mexico, said Monday.
The 20-year-old criminology student made headlines when she took the reins of the police force in one of the most violent cities in the border state of Chihuahua. It's common for police officers in Praxedis to be abducted and killed.
"Marisol did not show up for work this morning as she was expected," town secretary Andres Morales said. "Since she was on a personal leave that expired today and did not reach out to us over the weekend, she now faces termination. It is now an official matter. We don't know anything about her whereabouts. Our attempts to get a hold of her during the weekend were unsuccessful."
Praxedis Mayor Jose Luis Guerrero told CNN last week that Valles Garcia was on personal leave because her 8-month-old baby was sick. He said she was expected back at work Monday.
"Marisol, in fact, still works here and she's still getting paid. She comes back on Monday," he said.
Praxedis is located about 35 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez, one of the bloodiest cities in world.

Maybe local officials(on their own or by suggestion) realized that her youthful bravado was, while noble, not in her best interest or her child's best interest. They probably did this young lady a huge favor. Regardless...this seems like the best choice for her. I just hope and pray that there is not a far more sinister reason for her absence and lack of contact. I really hope the Mexican people realize that they are going to have to fight to win this battle. The cannot expect things to change...the people have to rise up against these cartels. Lives are being lost every day and this will continue without an organized, defense by the Mexican population. The government has stated it's position..."You're on your own". They have to fight back

This is news because she is pursuing political asylum in the states. She took the position because nobody else wanted/wants it, it is too dangerous. She used the medical leave as an excuse to travel here and ask for asylum, claiming her life is in danger.

Are you really that old and senile? Most 20 year-olds are responsible enough to show up to work on time. Just because she's 20 doesn't mean she's lazy. Obviously there is a huge risk involved with the job she admirably took on. I'd focus on her safety rather than your ill-conceived notion that she's 20 and therefore is lazy.
