20-year-old Mexican police chief fired after failing to show up for work
Police chief Marisol Valles Garcia has been fired, an official in Praxedis G. Guerrero, Mexico, said Monday.
The 20-year-old criminology student made headlines when she took the reins of the police force in one of the most violent cities in the border state of Chihuahua. It's common for police officers in Praxedis to be abducted and killed.
"Marisol did not show up for work this morning as she was expected," town secretary Andres Morales said. "Since she was on a personal leave that expired today and did not reach out to us over the weekend, she now faces termination. It is now an official matter. We don't know anything about her whereabouts. Our attempts to get a hold of her during the weekend were unsuccessful."
Praxedis Mayor Jose Luis Guerrero told CNN last week that Valles Garcia was on personal leave because her 8-month-old baby was sick. He said she was expected back at work Monday.
"Marisol, in fact, still works here and she's still getting paid. She comes back on Monday," he said.
Praxedis is located about 35 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez, one of the bloodiest cities in world.

So.. lemme get this striaght. The chief law enforcement officer for a town riddled with drug violence and cartel activity goes missing for the weekend, and doesn't show up for work. Now, I'm in Dallas, TX, mind you, but the first assumption would be fould play. Instead or conducting a thorough search for the this woman, the authorities are firing her, case closed. Any questions why the only people stepping up to the plate for this town have more courage than sense?
Joe...I lived in Mexico for a short time (gringa that I am even though I'm Puerto Rican...by the way I still don't know why Mexicans here in the state hate Puerto Ricans?!?!?!) anyway...I noticed that alot of the corruption that goes on start with people getting paid off....it's sad to say....I just hope this young lady and her child are ok and safe.....She was awfully valiant to step up in the first place when so few wouldn't in the times they are facing......

i was thinking the same thing. my first thought if the chief of police in a mexican border town didn't show up for work and couldn't be contacted... couldn't she have been murdered? i guess they have heard something back from her or CNN would've immediately jumped to that conclusion or made some sort of inference.
Everytime I read comments on this or any other new website, I am amazed at the ignorant comments. Says a lot about people in our country the good old USA. Are there that many ignorant prejudiced people still around? Very upsetting.

"After being hailed as “the bravest woman in Mexico” for becoming a 20-year-old female police chief in a town where drug cartels had beheaded her predecessor, Marisol Valles Garcia of drug-embattled Pradexis Guerrero apparently crossed the border and is seeking asylum in the United States for herself and her infant son.
The college student had apparently been receiving death threats for refusing to work with drug bosses in the area, according to relatives who spoke to AFP news. Valles had been studying criminology in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s drug murder capital when she responded for calls for crime-fighting prevention ideas in Pradexis Guerrero. Officials liked her ideas so much they offered her the job, which had been empty for almost two years."

we heard last week she had beat feet cross the boarder to Texas and most likely is collecting welfare from the Federal Gubmint. She gets extra if she can't name the father just like US non tax payers.

See, in most parts of the world, the age of 20 is considered a woman, not a girl. The USA has a ridiculously extended childhood where 20-somethings are completely inept, incapable, incompetent children. This WOMAN is a parent, a college student, a working person, and a leader. Instead of assuming that she's an underqualified child, maybe you should reconsider how pathetic young American women are, and perhaps this young Mexican woman is just that much more competent than her American counterparts.

Nice try, Leo, but you are of course wrong. This young woman had zero police or military experience (or even training) prior to taking this job. Studying criminology in school, college or other, does not train anyone for real police work. Studying Gross Anatomy and Chemical Biology does not make you a qualified surgeon.
My question is this. Will se be able to collect retirement?

I admire the courage of this young woman. She was so bold enough to accept this job. Whether she backed off from her job or not is another story. People like her need support from the local people.
