More than 2 feet of snow drop in parts of Northeast

A powerful storm Sunday and Monday dropped more than 2 feet of snow in parts of upstate New York and northern New England - and heavy rain and freezing rain in other parts of the U.S. Northeast - cutting power to thousands and challenging motorists.

Thirty inches of snow was recorded in Jericho, Vermont, and New York’s Saranac Lake received 29 inches, according to CNN affiliate WPTZ. The roughly 24 inches of snow that fell in South Burlington, Vermont, is the fifth-largest amount from one storm recorded there, according to WPTZ and CNN affiliate WCAX.

Nearly all flights to and from Burlington’s airport were grounded on Monday, more than 10,000 Vermont utility customers were without power and many roads across the state were impassable, WCAX reported.

Even lesser amounts of snow were a problem in Syracuse, New York. The storm dropped nearly 14 inches there and snowplow drivers struggled to keep up, with five trucks breaking down during the storm. Many streets in the city went unplowed, leaving residents like John Leavines unable to get to work, according to CNN affiliate WSYR.

“I got suspended from work for a week because I couldn’t get there on time,” Leavines told WSYR. “No plows…what time is it? Noon? 1? Horrible.”

Heavy rain, freezing rain and melting snow were causing flooding in other parts of the Northeast. Flood warnings were issued in parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In Leominster, Massachusetts, firefighters rescued a man from his van after icy floodwaters surrounded it near a mall.

Odd, when this happens officials get on the radio / TV and say "stay home unless it is an emergency." But as you can see from this article if you don't go to work you get suspended or fired. Your job doesn't care if you live or die, and if you lose it you can't feed your kids. So, telling people to stay home is pointless. They can't.

Should he have been suspended? I would think not but usually this sort of thing is managed by the union rep. Oh, I see, he probably wasn't in one of those communist unions, he likely was working for a fair and caring employer.

"Right to Work" obviously has it's benefits. You have the right to go to work regardless of the conditions.

Wow. You'd better open your eyes and realize that you're functionally illiterate. Seek help. Don't post in forums until your command of the language is at least that of a fifth-grader.

Do you people who fear doomsday in 2012 even know what it's about? It's the galactic alignmnent...the day the earth, sun, and center of the Milky Way galaxy are in a straight line. The Mayans based their calendar on celesial movement so they ended it at the end of a regular cycle. The could have re-started it on the next day but really, did they really need a calendar beyond several thousand years in the future? 12/21/12 will be followed by 12/22/12, and 12/23/12, and so forth. Grow up, people.

I can NOT wait till dec 22nd 2012.. after all the weak minded, crazy people "off themselves" there will be more job openings to choose from.. maybe that's Obama's economic plan, "fear" of the Mayan prophecy , after that day, they proberly wont suspend you from work if you are late.. they'll actually need you there

Stop posting this drivel, no one can understand what you're trying to say because you cannot form a sentence that gets your point across clearly and concisely. You should spend your time taking an English class and stay away from posting comments in a public forum.

It's called punctuation; use it. You also may want to consider going back to Elementary School so you can re-learn your basic writing skills.

LIVED IN MANLIUS BACK IN THE EARLY 80'S AND SAW THAT KIND OF SNOW. FOR THE MAN WHO GOT SUSPENDED FROM WORK FOR A WEEK DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO THE OFFICE DO TO THE SNOW AND UNPLOWED ROADS.....I'D LOOK FOR ANOTHER EMPLOYER. ANY COMPANY THAT IS GOING TO PENALIZE AN EMPLOYEE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO WORK, IS NOT A REPUTABLE COMPANY AND ONLY CARES ABOUT THEMSELVES AND NOT THEIR EMPLOYEES. HOWEVER, WITH THE ECONOMY THE WAY IT IS AND YOU ARE LUCKY TO HAVE A JOB....I GUESS HE WILL HAVE TO BITE THE BULLET FOR NOW.

John Leavines, you need to find a new employer. Suspended from work as if you personally had control over the weather. What company does he work for? Can we boycott this company and whoever the stupid owners are who would do this to people who legitimately can't get to work? I am from the North east, and let me tell you if the streets are filled with snow most employers are reasonably sympathetic about that. Heck, my managers couldn't even make it out during our worst storms and I never got any disciplinary action. So yes, Mr. Leavines find another job. Don't put up with morons pushing you around or acting tough because the lack both length and a pair.

Why would you live in an area that regularly gets a lot of snow and not drive a four wheel drive vehicle? I mean serously, as a minimum the vehicle you depend on to get to work should be a 4X4. Just my opinion.

@Ron – Sounds like you don't live in an area like this. Well, good for you. Do you think 4×4 is some kind of magic carpet ride that can get you anywhere, through any conditions? Most 4×4 vehicles will not get you through 2 feet of snow. It is so funny to see the people out in their 4x4s, thinking they are impervious to snow, and they are the ones who end up flipped over, or in the ditch! I can drive through the snow in front-wheel drive better than most can in their 4×4. Go Sabres!!

One of the more ignorant comments I've seen. Is it really ignorance, though? Perhaps it's just plain stupidity.

The guy got suspended because he is an idiot. Most likely he "pointed out". He's a slacker. If he didn't suck at his moronic job, they would not have fired him. Just a guess.

Oh, and WOW, now I am truly terrified that your generation will be in charge soon.

I used to live in Manchester, NH, and i had to call in once due to snow. My boss then was cool with it. He definitly needs a new boss. If they don't need him for a week, maybe they don't need him at all. And for the record, it traditionally snows til Easter up there.
