NATO starts Libyan surveillance, while U.S., UK, France mull no-fly zone

NATO has launched around-the-clock surveillance flights of Libya as it considers various options for dealing with escalating violence in the war-torn country, America's ambassador to the organization told reporters Monday.

Representatives of key Western powers also highlighted the possibility of establishing a no-fly zone in Libya - part of growing campaign to break strongman Moammar Gadhafi's grip on power.

France, Britain, and the United States are working on a draft text that includes language on a no-fly zone over Libya, diplomatic sources at the United Nations said Monday.

The possible resolution will deal with triggers rather than timelines, one diplomat said.  If gross violations of human rights are committed, the diplomat added, the elements could be quickly turned into a resolution.

The text would be subject to a vote by the 15 members of the Security Council.  A Security Council diplomat said they were looking to submit the ideas to the council soon.

Any kind of military intervention in Libya could face sharp criticism from Russia and China who rarely approve of such measures.

The world would not be in the mess it is in today if the US would stop sticking its nose in other countries business.

You're probably right. If the US had never emerged as a military power, the world would be experiencing WWIII right now (or the aftermath). The 3rd reich vs the Muslims (with the Soviet Union on which ever side benefits them...assuming they did not lose to Hitler in our imaginary scenario).

If you think about the corruption elsewhere in the world, like the exposé ex-CIAs' Frank Anderson gave about Gadhafi ordering the hit in the 1988 Pan-Am flight 108 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland. This is why Moammar al-Gadhafi identifies himself with animals like bin Laden. Of the 270 people killed in 1988 on flight 108, 190 were Americans. Do you honestly believe Gadhafi wouldn't try to instill hate between U.S., China, and Russia as the result of no-fly zone? The man is oil rich with 3 million of his military, convinced he's got the world by the ass.

The J-20 won't be in service until the end of the decade, nor does the PLAAF even have a wet dream of the resources and capabilities it would need to deploy all the way across Earth. Even when you include the PLAN and their current naval aircraft, they have no operational aircraft carriers or surface warfare forces for that matter in order to effectively operate in the Meditterannean.

War is not the answer, but shooting down a few of these aircraft and an assassination is the answer! Anyone who hates tyranny is a dirty no good tea party Nazi! Mao! Viva Che!

Hey I gotta joke: A she-male walks into a southern red neck bar and asks loudly "Anyone want a tranny!?" So a hillbilly wearing a NASCAR hat responds "how much to put it in?"

Bad idea. Let Libya's neighbors create the no-fly zone. Certainly the US should not participate. Period.

NATO starts 24/7 surveilance of Libya, while it conciders options for dealing with the violence in that region. There are a lot of good arguments for and against getting involved but I just cant stand sitting around watching little kids die.

Why do people have to be so angry and rude? We will never all agree but we can be adults who accept that others have differing opinions. You will never win anyone to your side with such hate and intolerance.

@L64: In a perfect world you could lock a group of completely opposite thinkers together and eventually they would begin to compromise on issues they find important. What you see on this site are a bunch of people locked away in their own little bubbles. They don't have to compromise, so they don't. They have a narrow left/right viewpoint and anyone who disagrees is an uneducated idiot. Anonymity also allows the racist or brutal name calling to go on. I work with a mixed group of people and can assure you people either get along or avoid racial bigotry. A keyboard doesn't throw punches so the nerds feel safe. Just tell them to drink another Monster and play WoW some more.
