U.S. to resume military prosecutions of Gitmo detainees

U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States will resume using military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects held at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility.

The announcement said the Obama administration remains committed to closing the controversial detention facility, but will rescind its previous suspension on bringing new charges before military commissions.

The commissions are military proceedings rather than trials in civilian courts.

Obama previously pledged to close the Guantanamo Bay facility within a year of taking office in January 2009. However, it still is open due to legal complexities involving the status of some detainees and congressional opposition to holding trials for high-profile suspects in U.S. criminal courts.

I find it quite ludicrous that these guys are being prosecuted while both George Bush and Barack Obama continue to live like kings. After all, these two murdered far more people than the prisoners at Gitmo and continue to get away with it. How repulsive!!!

Who did they murder? Unless you are a pacifist, I think you will agree there is a difference between murder and military action.

All I'm saying is we should distribute justice equally. A baby killer is a baby killer. Acting like it's an oopsie doesn't change what it is.

You should be more careful, these people are not the same as a US president, these people killed many of our soldiers, if you had any children serving in the military you wouldn't think that way.

Oh wouldn't I? I don't think much of anybody who's nihilistic even if it were to be my child, but most of us grow out of it and that's the difference. There is no glory in war and I want everybody to know it!!!

If I were to vote on who needs to be prosecuted here,I would start with the right-wing thugs in Washington first since they started these two useless wars that we're currently fighting, causing untold death and destruction!

Were we not supposed to be reading about Gitmo being closed already? C'mon. What does Cuba have that Fla. ain't got. Nada por nothing. Florida's big enough to where we could keep detainees on the other side of the swamp. What's the holdup?

@Jim...these "wars" were planned long before you could pin them on one party. get a clue.

If the object was to get rid of gitmo, why did they stop trying them? More might be gone by now.

"If"...I don't recall an "If I close Gitmo" promise. And more might be "gone"? Gone where leeintulsa? And just for the record, since 911, how many terrorisists have been convicted. And where are they now. Congress voted in the largest prison funding increase in US history right after 9/11 "to house the thousands of "terrorists" we will be going after"...where are they? It's been a decade.
