Montreal cops investigating hockey hit

Police in Montreal said Thursday they will investigate a hit in Tuesday night's National Hockey League game as a possible crime, Canadian media report.

The hit by Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara on the Montreal Canadiens' Max Pacioretty left Pacioretty with a severe concussion and a fractured vertebra, according to a CTV report.

Chara was given two penalties on the play and ejected from the game. On Wednesday, the NHL said the penalties assessed on the ice were appropriate and it would take no further action.

But Quebec's top prosecutor, Louis Dionne, asked for the police investigation after watching video of the play, the CBC reported.

In the play, Pacioretty skates with the puck in front of the bench area of Montreal's Bell Centre as Chara comes alongside and tries to push Pacioretty into the boards along the benches. Pacioretty's head slams violently into a glass stanchion separating the two benches. Pacioretty was face-down on the ice for several minutes.

NHL Senior Vice President Mike Murphy called the hit "a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface," CTV reported.

Chara said Wednesday he did not try to harm Pacioretty.

“Obviously I feel bad about what happened. I was trying to make a strong hockey play and play hard. It was just very, very unfortunate that the player got hurt and had to leave the game,” the Boston Herald quoted him as saying.

"It was just one of those things. These things, like glass extensions, doors, even hockey nets, are part of the game. Obviously, players run into them. It’s just very, very unfortunate that a player got hurt,” he said.

The NHL's decision not to further discipline Chara didn't sit well with Canadiens fans. Their calls flooded a police emergency call center in Montreal after the league's announcement Wednesday asking police to take action, the CBC reported.

Pacioretty was also upset with the league.

"I am upset and disgusted that the league didn't think enough of [the hit] to suspend him," he told Bob McKenzie of TSN.com. "I'm not mad for myself, I'm mad because if other players see a hit like that and think it's OK, they won't be suspended, then other players will get hurt like I got hurt."

Hockey is a game that is not only prominent in males but female's hockey is also very trendy in all over the world. Different kinds of hockey are played in dissimilar states like ice hockey and street hockey. For all nature of hockey diverse forms of gear are required.

Further evidence that Canada is simply the worst place on Earth. US teams should refuse to play there. Ridiculous.

Canadians are pansies, pretty much as pathetic as the French. Maybe if you knew how to fight, your players could take a hit

It's hockey. If you're dumb enough to live where it can be played outdoors then you deserve what you get.

My first comment, i hope the Montrel player gets well soon and gets back on the ice, to help his team! Montreal is a class hockey system! But i dont see intent to injure here! Chara is not a ,hockey goon! But i do think his carelessness warrants a suspension! I just hope this gets over with soon, and doesnt turn into, Boston vs Pittsburgh! The fighting in hockey sux, but too many people love it, so its here to stay! Lets just play!

Yes this hit was bad, but it was not intentional, if it was on the other side of the ice there would be no conversation about the hit at all. as far as an investigation. thats crazy. the bruins lost Mark savard to a dirty hit from matt cook.(effectivily ending savards career) which cook received no suspenion. and the bruins fans did not ask for a criminal investagation. Montreal has the worst fan base in all of sports the complian about every little hit during the game. evertime their plays get hit they boo as to why there is not a penelty.

I watched the vid in slow mo a few times. Looks to me like the guy was skating with his head down not looking where he was going and went head first into the post on the box. I remember my coach yelling at me to keep my head up on the ice. Now I know why. The "hit" from the other player was trivial. The guy not looking where he was skating is the real cause.

Its funny how people bash Canadians about politicians ( Like Tg wrote, which BTW the US is not any better ) and what happened in hockey... its not about the hit that we're all upset at.. it's because the people running the NHL are not taking actions against hits that may end a players career... Yes it's hockey and hits will happen but to possibly end a career or worse ?? i don't call it a sport anymore.... and what about the kids that grow up playing hockey, do we explain to them its ok to take someone's head off ???

That's hockey. It's unfortunate that it happened, but it's not a crime and nothing that should cause an international incident. ay?

I am so tired of Canadians trying to own hockey! Just so you know, you did NOT invent hockey! The game has been played EVERYWHERE THERE IS ICE FOR A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE YEAR: All the Nordic countries, Russia, and has been played in Northern Europe since the Middle Ages. Also, Canadians didn't even invent curling! That was brought over by Scottish immigrants.

And as for MODERN hockey, the majority of the Original 6 NHL teams were AMERICAN, not Canadian. Get OVER it, Canadians! You didn't invent it, and you don't OWN it. Gah.

(PS, I am not hating on Canada, my husband is Canadian. I am just sick to death of this argument.)
