Ohio man is first executed with lone dose of pentobarbital

Johnnie Baston on Thursday became the first person in the United States executed with the single-dose drug pentobarbital.

Pentobarbital, a barbiturate that has been used in animal euthanasia and as a mild anesthetic in humans, was used in a U.S. execution for the first time in December, when it was administered as the first drug in a three-drug cocktail used in a lethal injection given to an Oklahoma inmate.

Sodium thiopental is the normal drug used in such lethal injections, but a nationwide shortage of the chemical has forced some states to scramble for possible substitutes.

In 2009, Ohio became the first state to perform an execution with a single drug, using a single dose of sodium thiopental.

Baston was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville, the state Department of Corrections said.

He received the death sentenced for the 1994 murder of Toledo store owner Chong Hoon Mah, a South Korean immigrant who was shot in the head at close range.

“For a long time I didn’t see a lot of value in myself,’’ Baston said Thursday in the death chamber, the Toledo Blade reported. “It wasn’t until this moment, till I had to go through this ordeal, that I have seen so much love from so many people, letters from people all over the world, and even Ohio.’’

To Mr. Crowley: You misunderstood. These murderers would not be PAID. This would be their "sentence", never to be allowed back in this country. Think of how this would be a deterrent to murder– this would be the known punishment once they are convicted.

@ Ahem, I agree with your previous post earlier regarding sending the murderers over to Afghanistan and Iraq since they like to fight, stab, shoot and kill mostly Innocent people. Send them overseas (Oneway ticket) to fight for this Country. We could use their expertise where it is needed. Why should OUR Military (young men/women) fight and get shot-up, blown-up Overseas when we have Our Own War Right Here in the US. Start Shipping Obama!

I'd say getting put down like an animal would be appropriate for this dirtbag, but that would be an insult to animals.

I can't help but notice that those who oppose the death penalty also spell correctly and understand punctuation rules, while those most eager to "off" people struggle to form coherent sentences. No surprise there-the ignorant builder only knows how to use a few simple tools. Executing people is the simplest tool of all, and violence is the tool of choice for the most ignorant people in the world.

If this drug is considered appropriate for my beloved companion animals when it is their time to go, then it is more than good enough to put this murdering low-life to sleep.

If they are low on drugs, head on over to wally-world and fetch some bullets. They can be very effective. In this case it is what he deserves, as that is how his victim died.

It's amusing to me as I sit here reading every single comment with the majority of them completely off topic. I don't know if any of you compalining about there being a god, or not being a god, or race, or your sob stories, actually read the article. "Face Palm" as I read above.

Everyone should come to terms with one's own mortality sooner in life. Maybe then people would not say or do things they regret later. Only at the point of mortality did Mr. Baston find this to be true. Everyone (christians, agnostics, atheists) will be judged at some point in time. No exceptions will be made!

Yes let people with cancer have a choice one drug no more pain!! Capital punishment Hell yes public hangings the crime in this country would drop greatly. Prison for most of them is to nice 3 meals a day and heat and ac to keep them comfortable. We have men and woman who are veterans not getting the same care these animals get tv free time and not have to worry about where they will sleep if it rains. But what do I know just a middle class guy with two kids that knows right from wrong isn't that what they teach us in kindergarten!!
