U.S. set to send disaster relief teams to Libya

The United States will soon be sending disaster relief teams into eastern Libya, the WH National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon said.

The teams' activities should not be viewed as military operations, Donilon said.

"It can no way shape or form be seen as military intervention," Donilon said. The teams will assess that humanitarian aid is being delivered. "This is purely humanitarian to better assist in a humanitarian way the people of Libya."

How about the US send "disaster teams" to urban locations here in the United States where homeless persons desperately need their help and emergency care!

They already do this. There are shelters and food banks and many on the ground organizations here in the US. Proof is that these homeless people can live for more than a few weeks.

You need to travel to other nations of the world and see what is actually happening there. Then you will be thankfull you are an American.

When is the last time you dragged your fat a** out of that chair you are potificating from and actually volunteered at a homeless shelter or are you a new Democrat – "do as I say and not as I do"?

Funny how lots on here say: "We need to think of OUR country first!"..and "the president is our problem"..BUT everytime President Obama try's and help the middle class or the poor he is seen as a socialist by The Repubs. Trust me Pres. Obama want's nothing else but to help us Americans the only thing in his way is the Republicans.

agreed – MORE needs to be done in this area. Food banks and shelters are great, but we don't have enough of them.
Beds are always full and people still end up on the street. It's not over until the people on the streets or hungry have CHOSEN that lifestyle.

They have a saying for this – "you can't help others until you help yourself"
"Others" in this context is any other country and "yourself" is referring to U.S.

US is starting to feel like a hollow shell. Keeping up outside appearances while the interior goes to cr@p.

I totally agree, but the right-wing thugs in Washington are far more concerned about what's going on overseas. This is not right!

If you want to volunteer to help the homeless, that is very commendable. Just don't think that the United States should cease interactions, including disaster assistance, to places where people are in peril, because you have decided that people outside the U.S. are of lesser value or importance.

I couldn't have said it better myself even though I am not an American. Everyone all around the world hates the American Government but they always expect the U.S. to spend their money while sending their young man and women to die for them. What happened to their rich Arab brothers?

i hate how so many people always talk about "how bout we help ourselves first" and such, but does nothing about it themselves. how many times do we walk in our cities, and walk by those very same homeless people and do absolutely nothing. Americans are always looking to point the finger at someone, to make them feel better about themselves. "lets send disaster relief teams to help the homeless". my charge to you, "Send yourself". reach out to the people around you and help them out. if everyone who reads this did that, we'd already be in much better shape. stop waiting for someone else to do it and complaining when they dont, and do it yourself.

How much is it costing us? Why should we send relief to Libya, when we are so heavily in debt we cannot honor our own financial obligations. We need to take care of our own first, and then if there is money left over send it to foreign countries. Not the reverse.

So we can send stuff to Libya for aid, which is food, water, medical but when Katrina happened it took forever to get mobolized??? What a country we can get aid half way across the world faster than we can get it for our own people here. These so called "rebels" sound like a bunch of dudes of the street runing around hoping for a revolution. I mean what real hope can they have if military dont come in to play here?

At least most of the funding that Obama has done during his presidency has been directed towards the US unlike his republican counterpart Bush. He sent all our resources overseas and now the hypocrite republicans want to complain about the deficit and the state of our economy. We are in this financial crisis because of the Republicans. Now all their rich buddies want to run for office and finish ripping off the middle and lower class to support their lavish lifestyle. This is why I voted for Obama in 2008 and I will be voting for him in 2012

Why do we feel like we need to take care of every country in the world? What is sending a "Disaster Team" really gonna accomplish? NOTHING!!! Why doesn't our government drive around Oakland,CA, Los Angeles, CA, Detroit, MI, Washington D.C, or any other big city in the U.S. they will see Disasters right in our own backyard. We need to take care of our own people before we take care of anyone else. This will do nothing for the U.S. Its not our fight/war. Nobody in the world would come to our aid, if we were in need. So why bother!!!

I would tend to agree. The United States is 12 TRILLION in debt, most of it owed to China. Do you see THEM sending aid? This is about OIL and nothing else.
