Mel Gibson pleads 'no contest' to battery against ex-girlfriend

Actor Mel Gibson entered a "no contest" plea Friday afternoon to a misdemeanor battery charge relating to an incident a year ago involving his former girlfriend.

Los Angeles County Judge Stephanie Sautner accepted a plea deal that puts the actor on unsupervised probation for three years and requires Gibson to complete 52 weeks of anger management counseling.

"No contest, pursuant to People v. West," Gibson said, when Judge Sautner asked for his plea.

The "West plea" allows a defendant to enter a no contest plea without admitting guilt.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Simone Shay told the court the prosecution accepted the plea deal "to lessen the trauma and impact of any court proceedings on the victim and minor witness."

    He would have beeen sentenced to at least 6 months in prison in the UK.
    Aggravating features – domestic violence, in the presence of a minor, breach of trust, more than one punch to the face.

    (I'm a magistrate (lay judge) in England)

    @cesar: LMAO! And, hello.

    Anger management is good...unsupervised probation...ok, if he doesn't screw it up...but he should have been court-ordered to attend an alcohol awareness program and mandatory AA meetings.

    Hey, it's okay if Charlie Sheen does it, but not Mel? Oh, that's right, Charlie is younger, cooler and has, make that HAD, a cool tv show. That Hollywood Sparkle makes all the difference, huh?? They are BOTH LOSERS, even with all their money.

    I believe this is error. The Judges order was for 52 weeks of Domestic Violence Batterers's treament which is totally different from Anger Management. Please review the order and correct the article.

    Another delusional Catholic who cannot reconcile reality and his religious delusions. Let's nail him to a cross, then maybe he'll understand that this is the real world.

      Could you post under a different name,please? I hope that you're trying to be blasphemous. We need all the morality that we can muster here since there's so little of it Washington these days,thanks to the right-wing,ignorant,foul-mouthed,anti-intellectual Tea Partiers!

    I laugh at the whole situation. He and his ex-girl were both fools to think that there relationship was gonna last. We all know what her intentions were. She is a singer?! Really?! If she is so good in Russia, why is she here? She should be singing! Right?! NOT!
