Four N.Y. Times journalists missing in Libya

Four journalists for The New York Times are missing in Libya, the newspaper said Wednesday on its website.

The Times said the missing journalists are Anthony Shadid, the paper's Beirut bureau chief and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner; Stephen Farrell, a reporter and videographer who was kidnapped by the Taliban in 2009 and rescued by British commandos; and two photographers, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario.

"We have talked with officials of the Libyan government in Tripoli, and they tell us they are attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of our journalists," executive editor Bill Keller said. "We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed."

I know a world class journalist who has dodged bullets in the middle east and would be there now if not for a family situation that required her to return to the US. She is not an idiot. She is does not want to get killed. She has two teenagers and a husband. But, her professional life is to bring truth to the people of the world. Truth is powerful. Truth is necessary for positive change. She is courageous and knows full well what the risks are. It stressed her husband tremendously. Her kids grew up with it and just want to hear from her on Facebook so they know she is alive and then see her in a few weeks. She's normally home at night at least half the time, but when she is not, it's normal for them and Dad is home. No, she does not "deserve" to get captured when she is doing this sort of thing. She deserves kudos for doing this to bring us the truth about what is happening in the world. Many journalists are true heros.
