WWI German U-boat found sunk off Netherlands

Dutch researchers found the wreck of a World War I German submarine in 2009 but kept the discovery secret until this week, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.

The crew of the research ship HNLMS Snellius hoped they'd found a Dutch submarine that disappeared in 1940, but the vessel turned out to be much older. A brass plate indicated the sub was the German U-106, which sank during World War I, the radio report said.

The announcement of the discovery was delayed while German officials confirmed the sub's identity and sought out relatives of crew members, according to the radio report.

A Dutch navy spokesman told Radio Netherlands the U-boat would not be raised but would be designated a war memorial.

Humm that's a great idea to preserve history

So lets take a history lesson in WW1 the government type was Government Federal monarchy 18 January 1871 – 9 November 1918

A federal monarchy is a federation of states with a single monarch as over-all head of the federation, but retaining different monarchs, or a non-monarchical system of government, in the various states joined to the federation.

In recent years the Kingdom of Belgium and the Kingdom of Spain have been referred to as federal monarchies, although neither are officially styled as such.[2] Canada and Australia are also federal monarchies, and both share the same individual as their respective sovereign.

AmmoPapa, tsk, they didn't have subs in 1812. This is the same sub the Nazis used to steal all that Nazi gold from gold rush in 1849. They needed it to fund that trip to the Antarctic where they found that island with all the dinosaurs. Their plan was to breed the dinosaurs into super Nazi warriors for use during WWII. Thank God THAT didn't work out for them! (The island blew up, if you remember).

Pearl Harbor was perpetrated by Michael Bay, who deserves to be sunk to the bottom of the ocean for it.

No, this was the sub used by George Washington and OJ to ferry the Ewoks across the Bermuda triangle in order to encircle the Vietcong aircraft carriers.

I thought it was in 1814 in New Orleans. Johnny Horton had a hit song about that battle in 1959.

Although I agree that it should be left as a memorial to those who went down with her, I'd still like to see some pictures of the wreck. Regardless, may those who rose to their country's call rest in peace and with dignity.

Did Germany start counting U-boats with 1, or with 100? Was this their 6th U-boat or their 106th?

After reading some of the off-the-wall and undeducated comments on here, I'm reminded again of the bumper sticker: Never underestimate the power of idiots in large groups. Some of you people need to crawl out from under your rock occasionally and see the sunshine, and take a good dose of Ex-Lax.

But, that would mean I'd have to put my game controller down. And, I might actually have to learn something dude. What's wrong with you, if it aint about ME, I don't care... I think that sums it up for some of the idiots that comment on this.

Pretty apropos to a lot of the comments on this article, for sure.

Every death during war cause heartbreak to someone else. It is sad that humans continue to have wars and that men and women die in them. This sunken submarine is a grave, let it lie in peace. I realize that war is sometimes necessary but most of the ones who died or wounded wanted nothing more than for it to end and to survive it.

  10. Past History

Get over it, and let us learn from past mistakes. The only thing that is good about finding this sub is that it will help the families with closure. I was working in the former east Germany last year, these people are some of the warmest, friendliest people you will ever meet. I was invited almost every night to someone's home for dinner and when I wasn't in their home we were at the local watering hole. Don't ever forget, but learn, and forgive past mistakes.

So, how long has it been that 82% of our schools have been failing this country?

As long as politicians (and those that put them in office) always cut spending on schools and teachers but not the military. See what happened in Wisconsin? Case in point.

@Josh – private schools spend less per student and even pay their teachers less, typically, but year in and year out they produce superior results. Care to explain that in terms of spending = good education theory? Also, address the fact that the public school curriculum has for decades been firmly under the control of the left.

After 4 years, I've given up on public schools in California. My kids are going to private school next year. They both actually have teachers who forbid smart kids from working ahead. They will even get benched if they do their homework early. Perhaps even worse. their teachers don't even grade homework, not even pass/fail. It only matters that they did it and turned it in. Whether or not they did it correctly is irrelevant to their grade. Isn't public school wonderful?
