The U.N. Security Council on Thursday voted to approve a no-fly zone extending over all of Libya to try to halt Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's mounting attacks against rebel positions.
The resolution states that "all necessary means" can be used to enforce the no-fly zone. Flights to provide humanitarian aid, medicine or for evacuations are exempt.
The vote was 10 for, none against and five abstentions.

Color me surprised. I was expecting at least one veto.
I guess first stop it ground based anti -air. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be another issue to blame the "west" for.
Let's see, all they have is Russian migs (older ones), sukoy's and French mirage – all garbage;)
Should "NUKE" that whole Middle East!! No great loss.
Thank you UN security Council you made my day. Hopefully the rebel positions will hold. Our prays and thought are with you and hopefully Kadafi wI'll be gone soon. Inshallah.
USA
There is enough firepower on the USS Enterprise to eliminate The entire Libyan airforce and all ground radar in the country. Watch what happens if we turn 'um loose!!!!
We saw it all ready. It was called 9/11. Let 'em wipe each other out.
I'm very happy with the un for approving a no fly zone what took them so long,, but its still time
And just who in the hell is the UN anyway? They have no authority to do squat. They can't impose that I don't take a dump on the ground in NYC any more than they can impose a no fly zone anywhere. Bureaucrats, that's all. THEY HAVE NO AUTHORITY, like it or not. If the US is supposed to get involved, get the Outlaw Congress in on this one. Fcku the UN!
Let's hope this finally helps. -Holly Hovore
Too little too late? The UN should apologize the the families of every civilian who was murdered while it dragged its feet on this.
About time! Time for some MOAB R&D on mercenary thugs.
Far too little and far too late. And, just as the UN itself, the resolution is irrelevant. The pro-regime ground forces are already on their way to Benghazi where they'll defeat the anti-regime rebels who said they'd fight to the death in Ajdabiya and then turned and ran as soon as the first rounds were fired.
Gotta wonder in who's pocket Gadhafi is in. The guy sponsors the downing of a jetliner, gets the release of the terminally ill terrorist who isn't terminally ill and now this three week fiasco. Somebody in power is getting filthy rich.
Bravo to Pres. Obama and Sec. Clinton for NOT intervening in Libya unilaterally, but working with our ALLIES and ARAB states and the UNITED NATIONS to rid the world of this monster Gadhafi! His supporters will now realize the entire world wants Gadhafi removed, so that he can be put on trial for unspeakable crimes against humanity – attacking his own people with tanks and warplanes.
Much as it might be desirable - no mandate for that, because no mandate for ground troops. we'll continue to buy oil from Libya once the dust has settled.
May Libyans be saved from the heartless cruelty of this demented creature. for once, the UN gets it right. What cowardice that five countries abstained. Shame on you.
