Four Navy officers get letters of censure over lewd video

The secretary of the Navy has issued letters of censure to Capt. Owen Honors and three other officers involved in the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise lewd video scandal, Navy spokesman Capt. Danny Hernandez said.

The letters effectively end the officers careers, as they will prevent promotion. The letters cannot be appealed.

Honors created the videos and was second-in-command on the Enterprise at the time. Others receiving censure were his successor, Capt. John Dixon, and former Enterprise commanders Rear Adm. Larry Rice and Rear Adm. Ron Horton.

It seems that you don't know jack about the military... A censure letter is the worst thing someone in the military can get... It's game over... You're done...

It is "a big deal". It destroys their careers !!!! It seems WAY to harsh and unfair.

That letter IS a very BIG DEAL. Te commander of one the premier ships in the Navy is usually destined for very high rank, eg admiral.....This letter keeps the officer from that rank, just this letter even though his record may be otherwise spotless destroys the individual's career whic given his current rank is near or over 20 years. I agree what he did was completely wrong, inappropriate, maybe even criminal, but the letter did what needed to be done, removed an unfit leader from command of young sailors who deserve much better.

      What a dolt!

This isn't Congress where censure is used to slap someone on the wrist when they get caught being a crook like Rangle and then they are allowed to go back to their stealing for the public.

For officers in the military this means their careers are over, and if you had actually read the article instead of rushing to the bottom to post up and show your ignorance you would have known that.

Anchors aweigh! Way to harsh. But the unbalanced, politically incorrect atmosphere these days cuts no slack. This should be the worst thing anyone in the navy ever does.

Hard to feel sorry for them- if they are 0-6 and above they will collect around 6-7 k a month for the rest of their lives (and it will go up as the cost of living/inflation increases) not including social security once they hit 65.

This is the end of their careers, the worse that could happen to a Naval Officer. Some of you appear to have no idea about what being an Officer in the military, especially the Navy, means. They don't say "Officer and a Gentleman" for nothing. Whether you find humor or approve of their actions, they violated the Miltary Code of Conduct. It also appears that many of you have only viewed the edited video, if you had seen the entire, unedited version I would hope you'd see how immature, disrespectful and dereliction of duty. How do you expect the crew to respect and follow orders from someone who acts like an infant with his crew? How do you expect them to trust someone like this??????

David, his retirement is NOT gone. UNLESS a recommendation to evaluate his retirement rate was given, his retirement will be at O-6.
If the recommendation to evaluate his retirement rate WAS made, the Secretary of the Navy would determine what his retirement rank IS and THAT would determine his retirement pay.
He violated federal law. He violated DoD and Navy regulations. He disobeyed a direct order from the Secretary of the Navy.
      He earned that letter.

Ask any sailor if they found these videos offensive, and you will get the same response. No. This whole ordeal is bull. The Navy, which is known for cracking gay jokes about themselves; The Navy, whose sailors swear like, well, sailors. The Navy, WHO KILLS PEOPLE. Why Liberal activists had to blow this out of proportion, i dont know, some demented political agenda.

I keep asking, "Who do I see about joining the killin' Navy?" but nobody has an answer. Same goes for the other services...well, except maybe the Marines. Mind you, the Marines do a certain amount of making-the-world-a-better-place-type stuff – but mostly they still kill people.

Agree. The Navy is like a fraternity. It was a slow news cycle and a bunch of bullspit was made out of it. To us that have served (proudly on Enterprise I may add) I would not hesitate to say that the overwhelming majority feel bad for their former Captain.

For all you liberals that are mad and wanted them to hang like Hussein, a letter of censure ends their careers. It's not "just a letter in their permanent records". It's a shame b/c the video was actually funny and not offensive to anyone except those liberal types that are always looking for things to be offended over. If you don't believe me, go to youtube and watch his videos. You liberals crack me up! You have no problem with ending someone's hard earned career and dragging their good name through the mud, but then you'll turn around and send those same people to fight and die in Libya against their will. A Republican wouldn't snort coke, get busted, and then lie about it. Or cheat on his dying wife. Or dodge service during Vietnam. Or...

We don't have a problem with it because in any other workplace, you would be canned without the dignity of a hearing. The military is supposed to set the highest bar in terms of honor, not appeal to lowest common denominator. This is not about PC, this is about holding people responsible for doing stupid things. Would you expect anything less of our military?

Although I don't agree what the Captain did, other less drastic measures should have been taken. He has dedicated his life to serve in the Milatary to keep us safe and free. He has a stressful job and sometimes people de-stress in inappropriate ways. He should have been been reprimanded but not have his career destroyed.

Got news for you: the officers who got censured ended their careers through their own stupidity. They are being forced to accept responsibility for their actions: had they been honorable, they never would have allowed this to happen under the weak pretext of needing to blow off steam. You are the hypocrite for exercising a double standard of engaging in baseless attacks on liberals while insisting they revere your views, as if you are beyond criticism. Would you have accepted responsibility if you screwed up?

James is right. I saw these videos and they were harmless attempts at boosting morale. I'm a gay ex-military man, and I was totally NOT offended by them. In a world where black comedians can just about the N word, gays call themselves queens, and a whole host of taboo topics are wrung through the wash in the names of comedy and enlightenment, it is amazing to me that the military cannot know when to lighten up. My heart breaks for these four officers.

Whether we find the videos appropriate or offensive is irrelevant. The Navy officers involved made the videos knowing they violated the rules. They made sure to cover for the Admiral and they had multiple complaints from Navy service members serving. Regardless of what we think, rules were broken, people complained and they said F U. I'm glad they got they letters. They didn't care about the people serving under them or what they thought.
