Four Navy officers get letters of censure over lewd video

The secretary of the Navy has issued letters of censure to Capt. Owen Honors and three other officers involved in the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise lewd video scandal, Navy spokesman Capt. Danny Hernandez said.

The letters effectively end the officers careers, as they will prevent promotion. The letters cannot be appealed.

Honors created the videos and was second-in-command on the Enterprise at the time. Others receiving censure were his successor, Capt. John Dixon, and former Enterprise commanders Rear Adm. Larry Rice and Rear Adm. Ron Horton.

We pay these men to kill their fellow human beings without question or remorse, and we censure them for saying some bad words? Stick a fork in yourself, America. You're done.

So, all this talk about honor in the military is just talk? Is that what you are saying? The frat-boy mentality has to go. I'm just glad the Navy did the right thing and held them responsible.

This whole deal is a shame. I've seen those videos and being former navy I couldnt stop laughing. If anyone was offended, they had multiple official and unofficial channels through which they could complain. These men's careers were needlessly ended.

Poor leadership. Filing complaints against your commander is probably a sure-fire way to draw a lot of heat.

The interesting point to this is that Honors had said that the former commanders and higher-ups had given him the thumbs up. The fact that THOSE people were censured as well clearly sends a signal that Honors wasn't being made a scapegoat, but that all the people involved in the production were being held responsible. That's a very powerful statement by the Navy. No more "business as usual" and "boys will be boys". Good for them.

Why the dig at liberal activists?
Haven't bashed a dem today yet?

Although I am sorry these people have lost their careers, I have to wonder whose moronic idea this all was in the first place. Apparently *somebody* found this offensive, because it came to light...why is anyone surprised that when a video camera is involved, it will at some point be seen by people it's not intended for?

"why is anyone surprised that when a video camera is involved, it will at some point be seen by people it's not intended for?"

Too true, but in this case, it appears at least one member of the crew itself took offense and blew the whistle.

Sounds like it would have been a fun ship to be on during that time frame. We had a CO on a ship I was on and his motto was work hard and play harder and we did. we also aced every inspection that came our way and moral was very high. Then we got the new CO whose motto was work hard and then work harder. Moral went down the ship ended up failing inspections and got to the point where it was deemed non-deployable.

Did your CO fraternize/participate with the crew by making lewd, immature and completely unacceptable shows/videos? Did he act in such a way that you lost all respect and would question his maturity and ability to lead in a real situation...not some excercise or inspection? My father was a careet Naval Officer, 27 years, and he found this behavior unbelievable. He believes this would lower the deference for the Captain, resulting in a question of whether he was the right person to command an entire ship. The chain of command is critical and crews have to respect and trust their Captain.

For some reason my initial reply wouldn't post, it regards the psychological underpinnings of your lack of honor. He wasn't in trouble for gay jokes, it was conduct unbecoming an officer and indicating he was disobeying orders in a video distributed to the entire crew. Your dishonesty is as stupid as your bigotry.

The Navy should be applauded for its actions. Unlike the Army in the wake Abu Graib, the Navy held accountable two flag rank officers (admirals) and two captains in line to be promoted to flag rank. Too often, the top brass find a way to shield their own. Not this time. Way to go, Navy. My opinion of that branch of the U.S. military just went up a few hundred percent.
