Four Navy officers get letters of censure over lewd video

The secretary of the Navy has issued letters of censure to Capt. Owen Honors and three other officers involved in the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise lewd video scandal, Navy spokesman Capt. Danny Hernandez said.

The letters effectively end the officers careers, as they will prevent promotion. The letters cannot be appealed.

Honors created the videos and was second-in-command on the Enterprise at the time. Others receiving censure were his successor, Capt. John Dixon, and former Enterprise commanders Rear Adm. Larry Rice and Rear Adm. Ron Horton.

Carlos, a letter of censure is NOT the worst thing that could happen...you never heard of a court martial?? They will all retire with full retirement pension and benefits for life. And nothing prevents a lucrative career as a lobbyist for a defense contractor.

@Pacoatemiami Being retirement eligible is fine if all you care about is retirement. There is such a thing as career ambition, wanting to succeed, wanting to become an admiral. Not everyone desires a cushy pension and nothing else.

Can someone please explain to me what this is equivalent to in the private sector? Is it like a VP who gets censured and is told he'll never become CEO, but he can retain his current job and will continue to get employed, with no change in his benefits? I do not fully understand the "ending career" part, to me that term usually means getting fired.

It means no promotion and after a certain amount of time without promotion being forced to retire with full benefits.

@lede3957- You are absolutely right! When my brother was growing up all he wanted to be was a solider, he put those guys on pedestals and this is what we get. Men that are suppose to be the best of the best in all areas of whatever position they hold and especially these men who are suppose to walk taller and not engage in this type of behavior!
I don't care if it was horse play or not, they are the leaders and are suppose to lead by example!! And if they can't we'll find someone who can.
This is why the military has so many problems today because of actions like this, if others see there officers acting in respectful ways then they'll follow.
To the other folks that disagree, you should be thankful to the honorable men that have truly served this country so we can sit back and freely express our selves on this forum.
They are not untouchable any more.

Actually Justme, The "little" letter is "BIGGER" than you realize... It kills all 4 careers however, they still get to retire with their full benefits, which bothers me a lot as I am a Retired Navy EOD Master Chief with 30 years of HONORABLE service who still had a fire in his belly and wanted to stay beyond 30 and was turned down.......

Admirals, Captains, not like they had much Higher to go. They'll all retire and be just fine. I bet they'll all end up with lucrative defense jobs. Believe me, these guys take care of their own. Don't feel sorry for them. Feel sorry when an enlisted man gets the shaft as there is generally no silver lining for them.

I just watched the video, boy was it corny, not really offensive, but corny They were screwed.

"Oh a little letter in their files...BIG DEAL!"

Did you not read the article at all? This letter effectively ended their careers. If you read Capt. Honor's bio, he is an excellent sailor and commander. The video was a little risque, but not more than you'd see on Saturday Night Live. What is happening to these officers is tragic for both them personally and professionally and for the Navy in general. You'd think, after all the service and dedication the've shown to their country, we could be a little more forgiving of our warriors.
