What's a Tomahawk missile?

The Tomahawk cruise missiles that were launched Saturday against Libya are unmanned, single-use, programmable jet-engine missiles used only by the U.S. and British navies.

They fly very close to the ground, steering around natural and man-made obstacles to hit a target that is programmed into them before launch. Newer versions can be reprogrammed in flight but in this case that was not done, at least not yet.

They are different from other unmanned aerial vehicles in that they can only be used once - they are fired, they fly to the target and blow up. End of missile. A Predator and some other unmanned aerial vehicles can carry missiles, hit a target, then continue flying.

Tomahawk missiles normally carry a 1,000-pound conventional warhead. They can also carry 166 combined-effects bomblets, or mini bombs that spread out over a larger area. They can also carry nuclear warheads.

Tomahawks, developed in the 1970s, were first launched operationally by the United States during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. They are about 18 feet long with a wing span of nearly 9 feet, and they can fly at about 550 mph. Regarding Saturday's strikes against Libya, Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, director of the Joint Staff, said the missiles were in flight for about an hour, so they were likely fired several hundred miles from their targets.

these missiles were probably not very old. we depleted most of our stock pile of cruise missiles when we decided to invade iraq. These will have to be replaced, but it wil be money well spent never know when your going to need them again to take out some wacko who says he loves his people and would not harm them.

They seem like a relative bargain to me. Very accurate, pretty hard to stop, and one heck of a lot cheaper than an F-117 Nighthawk. The entire price of the Tomahawks used could be less than a single airplane, and no pilots' lives were put at risk. I can't think of another weapon that would be more appropriate or cost-effective for the current mission. Whether you are in favor of the mission or not is one thing, but given the goal of the current mission which is destroying air defense infrastructure and command and control, the Tomahawk seems like the perfect choice to me. Apparently military commanders agree. That's why they're using Tomahawks.

How do they possibly post an article like this and not let us know the cost? Stupid.

Keep in mind these are missiles that were already bought and paid for sometime before this. And if we dont use them, they still cost money just sitting around because of maintenance

Serious dude? What a wast of tax payers dollars that would be to fly agents out to my house to find out who I am, lol. I'm just an average American who is sick of seeing what this country has become as Jews have risen to the top of every power position in the country and now use this country as a shield for Isreal. Sick and f'ing tired of seeing our involvement in the middle east and the trillions of dollars that have already been spent on those wars while they layoff teachers in the U.S. because the federal and state governments are bankrupt. Bankrupt because the jews that run this country will destroy this country at any cost to protect their interests in Isreal. Wake up. If you really had pride in what America really stands for, you would see the corruption also and be fed up with it as well.

lol, why don't you get an education and then a job so you can accomplish your dreams instead of collecting welfare and blaming your own failures on others.

if you're sick of american involvement in the middle east maybe you should buy some solar panels and an electric car. If you're driving your explorer to work then look into the mirror for blame. If Isreal didn't exist we'd still be there because we are dependent on cheap middle east oil

How much oil reserve Libya has? They will have to pay back every penny we spent on liberating them once it is all over.

I'm with EC on this one: Larry Shaughnessy; you are retarded. Why would you confuse or compare a Predator, Global Hawk, or any other Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to a Tomahawk? It's called a Tomahawk cruise missile, not a Tomahawk UAV!

the cost of this operation will be covered by the $31 billion of Gadhafi's money that was recently frozen by the U.S government. Therefore, it is not going to cost us (taxpayers) a penny. However, There are things money can not buy, but for everything else (FREEDOM) there is a Master Card .

People ask "who do we borrow the money from to build these cruise missiles?" The answer is "our children." They're gonna end up paying for it.

Actually you already paid for them when the NAVY PURCHASED them from Raytheon. Do you go to the store buy a gallon of milk and pay for it 20 years down the road? No? Then why would the NAVY pay for a missile it used today 20 years down the road?

Well windowlickers that use a credit card to buy that milk might be paying for it 20 years later. The point is if we don't use them they get old and have to be dismantled and replace so it really doesn't cost anything extra to use them.
