Woman dies of injuries from Jerusalem blast

A loud explosion shook a busy street in Jerusalem on Wednesday, wounding 50 people and killing at least one woman, authorities said. It is the first bombing of its kind in Jerusalem since 2004.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

Police found a medium-sized explosive device attached to a phone booth near the site of a blast. It was close to Jerusalem's central bus station, Israeli medical services said. Watch CNN capture the scene moments after the explosion

Several of those injured were hurt critically, authorities said. The wounded include two pregnant women, according to Nir Barkat, the mayor of Jerusalem.

He condemned the "cowardly terrorist attack" in which "innocent people were hurt."

The blast took place in "a very crowded area" with "a lot of civilians and two buses," said Yonatan Yagadovsky, a spokesman for Israel's emergency services. "Three to four are in critical condition. The rest of the casualties are moderately to lightly injured," he said.

The injuries came from both the force of the blast itself and from flying shrapnel, he said. The wounded included two pregnant women, he said. The blast comes after an unusually intense period of hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians. At least 10 Palestinians have been killed since Saturday, including four militants and two children who died in an Israeli strike that appears to have missed its target.

"Israel and Jerusalem are relatively very safe recently," Barkat told CNN. "This is something that happens rarely, and we hope to keep it that way."

The attack "brings very bad memories to us," medical services spokesman Yagadovsky said. Israel had not experienced an attack for a "very, very long time," he said. "It is something that we will have to deal with again."

It is very sad to see such things happen on both sides. I am a Muslim and a full blooded Palestinian standing proud. I don't support any actions that are taken by neither side. Hamas must recongize the State of Israel and Israel must let the Palestinian people live in Peace.

On March 6, I traveled to the West Bank and Jerusalem, in the West Bank I could see that our fellow brother and sisters are living very happy. Then I traveled to Jerusalem and there I saw Muslims, Jews, and Christain living side by side and very pleasant with one another. I walked through the Old City and there we were three different relgions walking side one another with no harmful incidents. Why can't the whole country live like that?

Jeremy, in my opinion I believe everything we see in the Media is pre-planned. We the people that have no say in Government and therefore are fooled everyday by what we hear. In the end the truth will come out and we will all know who to blame.

The IDF is a very well orgainzed system, and I don't believe that they can make a mistake in killing innocent children and adults. If they want Hamas they can find them with no mistakes. Don't you agee? It's all about politics.

Fred, The IDF is a well organized system...but no organized system even in urban warfare makes civilians dieing obsolete...thats silly to think that way. Under what military knowledge do you base this theory of yours that the IDF can not innocently kill civilians? even the U.S military has killed countless civilians in afghanistan, pakistan, iraq, etc...that is the price of war..its an acceptable loss. In no war are civilians not affected. I can't name one. You seem to have this idealistic view of what Israel is like..I too have been to Israel, and I have worked with the IDF soldiers in areas that aren't even shown on Maps...they aren't a bunch of killers just sitting around thinking about murdering kids...they are kids who play video games, adults who have the same concerns as everyone else..some of them going to university on the weekends..its a civilian army.

You obviously have no military experience or knowledge of military action. Point to a modern day action against terrorism that takes place in a residential city (Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia,) and tell me how many civilians die. Then compare that to Israel. The Israeli military is one of the most precise in the world yet people like you think that there are magic satelites with lasers who can pinpoint a specific individual and kill them without causing collateral damage.

Is it possible Qadafi ordered this attack? I wouldn't put it past him. Or even the far right in D.C.

The only solution is creating a no-terror zone in Jerusalem and that can only be achieved by removal of the islamist jihadist elements from Jerusalem and the total separation between the two peoples

Israel did this, Israel wants to release the pressure on it self from the international community, Until a known military group adopt the explosion, it's all made up by Israel.

I'm not sure if Palin's arrival in Jerusalem had anything to do with it, but it makes you wonder. Any attack on Palin would not be done by any democrat, they want her around to run for president. There is a family of Caribou that has it out for Palin, maybe they did the bombing. Caribou are not the brightest so that would explain why the bomb went off after she left the country.

It is time once in for all for Israel to wipe out Hamas and Hezbollah – damn world public opinion.
The world does NOT appreciate what the Israels have to deal with, nor understand that these vermin
cannot be trusted on any level. They are not interested in peace because then they would have nothing
    to galvanize them.

Some of the comments are nothing more than ignorance of history & immaturity of thought. The more history you know the more you realize that all peoples have suffered over the centuries. Our inability to make peace is always a struggle.Life is not easy or fair. However, the Jewish people have never strapped a bomb to themselves in the name of G_d.

  12. Non-Believers Must Die

@Otis: It is insane how you can say innocent people. They are Jews!!!!!!! To say there is a Jew in this world, no matter how young, who does not deserve to die is like saying there is a flower who does not deserve to bloom. These people openly criticized the prophet during his time, and have no respect for Muslims. It is disgusting you can call these people innocent, and suggest there is a Jew on this Earth who does not deserve death. Your first amendment rights should be revoked, you Zionist!

The eveil and horror of the world starts and ends with muslims. They all must be buried in the bottom of the sea for good. These are not humans, only animals that fool the world. they use children as shields and then use it to show the world how "poor and weak they are". After that, they rush to the rockets and bombs.
The whole world will be a much better place without these terrorists.

I say the time for negotiations is OVER !!!! Rockets fired on a daily basis into Ashkelon, Bersheeba and now this?? The time for negotiations with the Palestinians and their Iranian-controlled Hamas terrorist organization IS OVER!!!! If Golda Meir were only alive and well today, there's no doubt in my mind – She would order IDF launch a crippling offensive against the Gaza Strip peninsula and West Bank, and push these cowardly terrorists out into the Mediterranean Sea. Israel needs to reoccupy both the Gaza and West Bank and send the Palestinians packing. If they don't want to recognize Israel and they choose not to live in peace, then send 'em packing and on their way to either Iran, Somalia, or Sudan. How many more innocent Israeli citizens, to include women and children, need to die at the hands of these COWARDS !!!! This is HIGHLY UNACCEPTABLE !!!!!
