Jetliner makes emergency landing after passengers faint

An American Airlines 737 jetliner with 134 passengers aboard made an emergency landing in Dayton, Ohio, Friday morning after passengers became ill and at least two fainted, CNN affiliates in Dayton reported.

Shortly after American Flight 547 left Reagan National Airport in Washington bound for Chicago, two flight attendants reported feeling dizzy, WDTN reported, citing American spokesman Tim Smith. Pilots dropped oxygen masks in the cabin, but at least two and as many as four passengers fainted, according to the CNN affiliate reports.

Six passengers received medical treatment after getting off the plane in Dayton and two were taken to a hospital, WHIO reported. It said the remaining passengers were being held in a sterile room in the  Dayton airport.

The jet may have had depressurization problems, WHIO reported, citing an airline spokesperson.

I'm sure the airlines poor maintenance is what is requiring passengers be held in a sterile room. Sounds more like one of the passengers had a highly communicable airborne pathogen.

The sterile room is probably just for safety precautions until they are sure of the reason. Depressurization sounds like the cause.

airborne pathogen that causes people to faint within the max. 1 hr duration of this flight? who are you to mock? you clearly have no idea what you are talking about either! haha what a joke

These passengers got sick and some fainted because they did not pay the "Clean Oxygen Charge". They only paid to fly and for their bags to fly.AA is no longer giving away free oxygen on their flights.

a pathogen cannot communicate that quickly. A toxin, however, could. Small amounts of a variety of toxins could cause those symptoms.

Actually, I just took the same flight not too long ago (5 days actually) and had similar problems on the airplane. Now off the airplane,I have horrible flu-like symptoms as well as some other passengers who were on that flight.

@EGN...Expertise? Would you need "expertise" to say that Alaska Airlines was crap for a good while too? (No press is good press when it comes to Alaska Airlines) Beyond that, I work in aviation maintenance management and we tend to study other operators' lessons learned. American Airlines was the subject of study a FEW times.

    • Flight 547 passenger with cabbage and beans diet

Hey, I just wanted to say sorry for making the other passengers of flight 547 sick. I can't help it... I love beans and cabbage. In all honesty, it wasn't that bad though. Those who passed out just made a big deal over nothing. Everyone farts... mine don't smell that bad.

Somebody passed some really Grody gas and that's what made people sick. If it was in the air circulation system everyone would have gotten sick.

I flew single engine fighters in the Air Force, but this plane has four engines. It's an entirely different kind of flying – altogether.

First, a sterile room is a security term, not a medical one. It means that it is inside of the controlled area, past security. Hence, it's a sterile area, free of possible weapons and such. From the TSA checkpoint on is considered sterile.
Second, the local media is reporting and updating the story, unlike CNN, as usual.
It was a depressurization incident. Two passengers didn't get their masks on in time and lost consciousness. One had an asthma attack.
You only get about 10 seconds to get a mask on when the aircraft depressurizes. After that, you're unconscious.

Once you lose pressurization at 28000 feet, you have 10 seconds of useful consciousness to get that mask on. Not a lot of time, to put it mildly.

      April 1, 2011 at 2:21 pm | Report abuse |
    • TheOtherMike

They don't use O2 bottles. The masks are attached to O2 generators. They use a chemical reaction to produce O2. Remember the Value Jet crash in the 90s? That was due to O2 generators that were shipped improperly, and they caused a cargo bay fire. The reaction is very exothermic, and generates tons of heat.

I fly AA quite a bit and find that they are as good as just about anybody else..to Europe a little under Air France for food and wine but local flights from BNA to Regean or JFK are fine. If I had to complain about AA it would be the flight from BNA to Honululu which is pretty long for only meals to purchase in the cheap seats...but hey...AA is AOK with me..I think some people just like to complain and pile on
