White children in the minority in 10 states
White children are now in the minority among people under 18 in 10 U.S. states and 35 large metro areas, according to a Brookings analysis of 2010 Census data.
The number of white children in metro areas including Atlanta, Georgia; Dallas, Texas; Orlando, Florida; and Phoenix, Arizona, fell below that of other children in the last decade as the population of white children nationwide declined by 4.3 million, the report said.
The decline occurred as the number of children identified as "new minorities" - Hispanics, Asians and other racial groups apart from whites, blacks and American Indians - grew by 5.5 million, the report said.
Hispanics registered an increase of 4.8 million, which kept the nation's overall child population from declining, the report said. The findings reflect changes in the racial makeup of the overall U.S. population with Hispanics becoming the nation's largest and fastest growing minority group.
Hispanics now comprise 23% of children, up from 12% in 1990, while whites now comprise just 53% of youth, down from nearly 70%Â in 1990.
The findings also underscore projections that the country will become "white minority" by 2042 as the race's median age keeps increasing. The child population stands to hit that mark in 2023.
"Slower growth among whites owes in part to their lower fertility rate - about 1.9 births per white woman, compared with 3.0 births per Hispanic woman - as well as a relatively low contribution to population growth from immigration" the report stated.
From 2000 to 2009, only 15% of growth in the immigrant population was attributable to whites, compared with 78% for Hispanics, Asians and other new minorities.
The report also said the aging white population contributes to a lower growth rate because proportionately, fewer white women are in their child-bearing years.
"The median age of whites is 41, compared to 27 for Hispanics, 35 for Asians, and a staggering 20 for the population of more than one race. As a further reflection of these age differences by race and ethnicity, just one-fifth of U.S. whites are under age 18, compared with one-third of all Hispanics."
The study also found that the decline in white children reduced the growth rate of the overall child population, from 13.7% in the 1990s to 2.6% in the 2000s. Though variation from state to state in child growth was considerable, on the whole, 46 states registered declines in their white child populations.
Not surprisingly, most of the states that experienced growth in populations of minority children are the ones where white children are in the minority: California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and Maryland.

The problem with society today is that people are scared of the future. Change is evident. There is to much political correctness, labeling and pointing the finger of blame. I am a college student studying geoscience and its definitely obivious that the world is overpopulating (or consuming to many resources). We are to busy fighting over the miniscule things like race, when in all reality if people would set their differneces aside and learn how to work together for a better future. Its sad to think how one sided minded people are and set in there ways. Food for thought- How long have humans been on this earth compare to the geologic time of the planet. People need to get egos checked and put aside there differences because no matter what the earth will continue, with or without us. Got a little off topic lol

if the children represented anything valuable to society instead of growing up to become another statistic in our ever increasing prison population then obviously i would see no problem with this. However, the black and hispanic population comprise such an overwhelming majority that the increased population of these groups will only perpetuate the incarceration rise. Now with hispanics i dont know if it is cultural or what, but in my highschool there were only 8-12 hispanic girls in my grade out of atleast 200 and over half of them are now mothers just 5 years later? What the hell is that about? none of those girls is on track to graduate college and are likely to be already separated from their baby daddy's anyway. now, without delving into a much more bias and racially controversial discourse on the subject, i will address one more issue. The notion of america as a melting pot i no longer believe to be true, epitomized by the last sentence i just made about steering clear of politically incorrect opinions. Our nation is so caught up with being politically correct and allowing every culture and language to be freely observed and spoken that our nations immigrants are increasingly maintaining their culture and are oblivious to american ideology and values. How often are things being translated into spanish now, spanish t.v. channels, esl programs in school for kids who were born in america, spanish language advertising on the subway, whatever. Back when Americanization was at its height in the early 20th century, people were forced to integrate into society for fear of outright ostracized from society. DIfference was discouraged, now it is encouraged by at risk of degrading our society into distinct off springs of completely other countries. There is no unified america, there is a segmented population existing in disjointed communities and our culture is only what we choose to see and observe because of the rise in technology and the fear of offending anyone after 400 years of subjugation and blatant discrimination. Is there an answer to this? I sure as hell don't have one, but then again maybe others don't see this as a problem. While some problems are left to fester and grow ravenous, some are silenced at the first peep, our culture is a discombobulated culmination of too much information and not enough knowledge and proper understanding and prospective to make sense of it all.

I have heard that we will be a hispanic country soon and I believe it. Some of the comments here are full of ignorance. Why are so many shows, etc. in Spanish, because they are industries that look to gain money. And as for hispanics and blacks having a disproportionate amount of their population in prison? Look at educational systems. Many of the schools that are primarily comprised of black students are poor and suffer from poor scholastic performance, while the 'smart' schools get allocated more funds. The legal system isn't perfect either. Cocaine in its powder form carries a less severe offense than it's crack cocaine counterpart even though there is no chemical difference. But it is not a secret that white users use primarily powder and African-American users, crack. It was like this for decades. Obama signed law to close this gap, but that's just one example of the inequality in our justice system. It seems some white people are afraid to become the minority.
I am too worried about illegal immigrants. But not all hispanics are illegal. But stop scapegoating them. Our problems reach far beyond that.

As a born and raised floridian I can safely say that the above statement in incorrect....... I live in one of the biggest metro areas in Fl and the white to minority ratio is probably 5/2..... then again I usually am not out much unless im going to and from WORK !

Wait – this is some misrepresented nonsense. The forecast of whites being a minority in 2042 is absolute, not relative. The % of whites in the country will still outnumber any other race significantly. Not being >=51% represents an absolute majority, but not relative.
Hard not to sound racist when reporting the facts of poor, which hispanics and blacks are at a higher percentage within their races, than whites – have a much higher birthrate than whites who, as a percentage within the race, are more educated and higher income.
Whatever the REASON for that inequality of wealth and education, the manifest result is poorer people have more kids, traditionally at the expense of the more wealthy.

The newley released statistics of the declining white population show that while whites reconginze its not economically responsible to have children in an uncertain economy; the minoriteis are having children at alarming rates with no income. You are missing the fact that as the populations will grow – they will start mix. So in next 20 years, we will see black mothers with white fathers, latino men with asian women etc etc etc. And same with happen with the habits. Believe me when I say it, when Latino man will marry white woman and will have kids – he will be the MOST RADICAL opposition to illegal immigration and so on. Because now he feels secure and he knows WAY TOO WELL how much illegals from his former country consume resources of now HIS NEW country...
