The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):
- The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
- Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.
- As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
- You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
- Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
- Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.
How would a government shutdown anger you?
To My Fellow Americans: My name is MR. Nobody. I like to said something about the budget, congress has less than 24 hours to decide, I hope i make them decide tonight, if they shut down the govertment, what will happen. Our troops that is fighting two wars just to protect our freedom , they are not going to be pay, I suggests one thing, if our troops don;t get pay congress should not get pay. We the people should make a law that congress should pass a budget bill, it is time for these three party to wake up and smell the coffee
you don't have to win a spelling bee to have a perfectly valid point...pay the people who are doing the work, not the clowns that skim the cream and get fat on our dime
lol my thoughts exactly ...spell check. ,
Troops will get paid but it maybe late. Troops will get their annual pay raises also, in short Civilian workers will loose their pay and you are silly if you think there are no civilians in support of the operations overseas. No raises for 2 years for those civilians also. Troops are in harms way and do deserve everything but you would crab if your boss told you tomorrow that you need not to come to work monday we have no money to pay you, and by the way your medical insurance that just went up in costs is still due. Obama decided to cut social security so it looks like we got a raise for a year. next year civilians and 800,000 of them will loose because the SS will go to normal, chances are good taxes will be raised and the feel of this years health costs going up will sting along with the increases of next years.
We have a Congress made up of bickering Dems and Reps get over it and get going!!
It seems that perhaps it is not his first language, and yet at the same time I get the notion that he is trying to become fluent in English in a country that was built on many cultures and ergo, languages. For you to simply call him out makes you look very small to many people. His point is still valid. Whereas yours is simply....well: POINTLESS.
Sarah, it's lose not loose, but keep being critical it is entertaining.
Ok then... let's talk about Sarah, where it's obvious that English IS her first language and yet she doesn't know the difference between "lose" and "loose". Spell check your own before you tell others to.
@"Mr. Nobody can't write" (Not Mr. Nobody) Apparently you can't write either. Have you ever heard of punctuation? What about capitalizing your sentences? You are a tool and a hypocrite. At least write the sentence you are writing to make fun of someone's grammar correctly.
Congressional pay cannot be altered in any way. It's the 27th amendment "No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened."
Here is another winner: We have many thousands of contractors in the war theater, including at FOB locations. They provide security, health care clinic care, motor vehicle repair, supply duties, communications control duties and more.
So, they lose their pay. That means, they go home. So, the installation loses medical, security, vehicle repair, supplies, food (the cooks are contractors) and ALL WAR COMMUNICATIONS CEASE, should they go unpaid.
Why do the communications cease? When you leave the facility vacant, all crypto codes are zeroed. That shuts everything OFF.
Now, the military knows this, so they have contingency funds set aside for emergencies. That scarce money will have to go to pay those contractors, in a mission essential personnel list basis. The rest, they stay home.
I know, as after I retired from the military, I DID contract for a bit. No, I didn't get that 250K pay, I got US scale plus 10% danger pay for the area the installation was in. I was also on the mission essential list, due to my duties.
In short, contingency funds get depleted, services interrupted, work backlogged. THAT causes overtime to become necessary whenever congress DOES stop sitting on their thumbs and gets a budget through.
So, the shutdown COSTS more than it'll save. AND it can endanger those protecting us.
HELL of a way to run a war!
are u sure ur an american? 😉
Really? They're protecting our freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan? I'll support our troops all day long and twice on Sunday, but don't insult my f–king intelligence by telling me we were attacked by *either* of those nations.
@ YOU all pointing out spelling and grammer. NOBODY is listening. you might as well be talking to NOBODY. because NOBODY cares. lol jerks!
Give the guy a break. You guys don't have to be such Dbags about his spelling and grammar. It looks like it is not his mother tongue. How many of you guys here criticizing his English can read and write another language as well as he can in English? I completely understand his point. And that is another thing, he has a point, not just criticism.
I agree. Start taking their money, and then we'll see how fast they figure it out. But these educated people will never lose their benifits, they are too smart for that.
Before you try and make a point, learn how to write!!
well , if the goverment shuts down , we should find a rich mate , there are many rich guys in site:seekrichsingles . why not go for a look ....?
Mr. Nobody, learn how to write before you attack anyone on the internet.
I'm going to recommend to congress that we give you money to attend english class.
wow are you all that hyped on nothing that you cant even read a joke when you see one? Wow he cant spell, its not his native tongue. Anyone who has even an ounce of comedic sense or a funny bone in their body would realize that was satire. Im now laughing at the fact you all took that seriously. Im also laughing even harder at the people that bought the satire as truth and backed it up....
Even the guy from Flowers for Algernon gets it. Congress should, too.
Why are you talking about the grammar and spelling of peoples' and the article's post
and if anyone comments on my comment complaining about my spelling or grammar then u also take it up the butt
For all of you creeps who just had to jump Mr. Nobody, you are a fine example of our government, everyone has to say something, but there is nothing getting done. You are mean and thoughtless and doing no one any good whatsoever, and most of you have typos. You are what really makes this country stink.
Imagine that. A family vacation getting ruined, because a park was closed, for a government shutdown. For your information, my vacation days are being used as days of layoff in the bad economy. Haven't had or could afford a vacation in at least 5 years. You think I care? $4 gas is here. Don't buy gas on Fridays.
What does not buying gas on Fridays do? Cause people to buy more gas on Thursday or Saturday, way to propose an effective solution.
So you blame your layoff on the government employees about to be furloughed or is it just that you're jealous they have better jobs? Your layoff was caused because the economy imploded under Mr. Bush not because some government staffer does his or her job well. By the way CNN is touching the tip of the iceberg...The CDC, the National Weather Service, the Dept of Agriculture, the Commerce (Holy God! Business is affected?!!) dept, FCC, Federal Transportation, are all hit by this. And it will matter to you soon enough.
Does Friday's even sell gas? I thought they were a chain restaurant.
lol Fridays, they might not sell gas, but their food prices are still going up.
Solution:
dont buy restaurant food on wednesdays!
I know its stupid to think not buying gas on certain days is going to do anything. You'll just buy more gas on Saturday. Are these people trying to stick it to the oil company by not buying gas one day and then being forced to buy the same amount of gas they needed on Friday, the next day? It sounds like the logic of an insane person.
Yeah, GREAT notions you have there! So, let's see who ELSE is furloughed. The FDA. Just WAIT for the food poisoning cases that'll disable children when they get that E. Coli O157:H7 infection that destroys their kidneys. At best, at worst, the kid is just dead.
But, that is OK for the GOP. They're sending a tea party message.
A message that they should be put against the wall and shot for high treason against the nation they were supposed to represent.
So don't buy gas at Friday's and skip eating there on Wednesdays. What did poor little o' Friday's do to get this punishment?... lol
Defending mr nobody and sarah:
Are you serious? Leave your childish comments and criticism on facebook and twitter. Spelled correctly or not, both have valid points.
and as this article so articulately points out, the loss of revenue from the park gift shops will be devastating!!! Our weak economy can not take a blow like that. Please... shut it down, we'll do it live!
10 !!!!! I can think of a thousand great things that would come from a shut down !!! If it were permanent I could think of a trillion !!! Sorry to all the military but that's what happens when you work for criminals ! I love my country but hate my government. This should be a WAKE UP call to all americans. You can't have freedom and a population with 40% on welfare and 40% on government payroll ! Sorry troops your fighting for the banks not the american people.
Your statistics are way off on facts, but those do not mean anything to you anyway. You love your country but hate your government. Odd, most of the world believes, and has believed for two centuries, that our form of government, even tolerating those who hate it like you, is the best in human history. Pick another form and try defending it, you nincompoop.
If you don't like government why not move to a country without one, like Somalia. I'm sure you'd lead a prosperous life there. Point to a real example of the form of government around the world that you'd like to have instead of ours instead of blathering about some idealized notion of a government that is rolling around your empty head. (If only I could have MY way everything would be perfect...)
Last time I checked, the 1.2 million people on the federal payroll doesn't make 40% of the population. Basic math: 1.2 million divided by roughly 300 million equals 0.4%. Even if you add in the roughly 12 million federal contractors, you only get to 4.4%. Maybe you should check out a remedial math class in your area... if they don't cut the education funds for the illiterate backwoods area in which you live...
Wow, thats great, thanks for your sympathy. As if I dont have enough to worry about being in Afghanistan, now I have to worry about feeding my family......but your right, thats what I get huh? Your an idiot and should be ashamed of yourself. Its not like I can just go get a second job to pay the bills.......and its not like I have the choice of leaving here either. Fighting for the banks? What kind of moron are you anyway? A thousand great things, I doubt you can even count to a thousand let alone think of a thousand things!!!!
90% of statistics are accurate 50% of the time
@sittnginafghanistan – Thank you for your service. I am so sorry that our government has failed you in this regard. My best wishes go to you and your family so that you can make it through this incredibly trying time.
A thought for all of you thinking this isn't a big deal –
"A Solider is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount of 'up to and including my life."
As a federal employee I am willing to give up my pay, which is minimal to begin with. However, why should honest hardworking military and civilian workers be scrutinized for trying to earn a living for their families. We arent wealthy, we dont have large homes and nice cars... we are suffering in this economy too! It is completely un- American to wish ill fate amonst your fellow Americans, especially members of the military who are putting their lives on the line everyday so you can sit here and criticize them!
@Surrounded by Idiots – Thank you!!!! I just hope the childish bickering stops soon before too much burdon is placed on everyone over here......There are many, many soldiers who are really worked up about this. Then you have idiots like nur amabo nur running their mouths about things they obviously know nothing about and making comments like, "good, I hope it happens". As with everything in life, its easy to comment on situations that dont effect you. But then again, this guys thinks 40% of America works for the government!! lol Like Ron White says, "you cant fix stupid!"
i think you mean:
90% of statistics, are 50% accurate, 40% of the time. This statement has an error of +- 9%
@nur amabo nur – However you feel about federal employees, who make salaries below par with their private counterparts, you can't take this out on the military. Our soldiers are protecting our country day in and day out, without asking for anything from you. You disrespect their sacrifice by saying this junk.
Also, teachers are paid by STATE governments. Police officers are paid by STATE governments. Sheriffs are paid by STATE and LOCAL governments. Maybe you haven't had to pay state taxes on your unemployment checks lately, but I sure as heck have paid for those services in my state taxes. If you don't know what you're talking about, maybe you shut keep your mouth shut.
@ sittinginafghanistan- I can sympathize... I am not deployed but I am in the army and starting to panic a little. It blows my mind that morons post this kind of stuff when there are people in harms way, already stressed to the max but now you get to throw finances into the mix. I am hoping as well that the "adults" that are elected into office will quit bickering and actually make some decisions.
Honestly, I wish you and I were in the same room when you said that, nur. I really do.
You'd rapidly find out EXACTLY what *I* did in the Army. It'd be unpleasant and you'd be unable to work for a long, long time.
I lost a cousin in one of the World Trade Center towers.
I've lost some real fine men in these wars, both to being killed and due to being maimed by IED's and enemy action.
YOUR dissatisfaction with our government over your being unemployed is justification for those disabled soldiers to not receive their rehabilitation?! Here is a news flash. I retired from the military last year, after over 27 years of service. My pension check won't be coming, oh well. I've gotten used to it, we've had a few shutdowns over the years and you learn to sock money away. What I find intolerable is that our soldiers, who are fighting RIGHT NOW, go without pay and have to worry about the families, rather than their own safety and operations. What I find intolerable is your lack of support for those who protect you. What I find intolerable is that YOU abandon those who serve you, because your wife beats you or something and you need to make others suffer.
If you're so dissatisfied with this nation, I'll HAPPILY pay for your one way ticket away from this land, AFTER you formally renounce your citizenship to the State Department and it's accepted. I'm dead serious. I'll pay REAL MONEY to be rid of an idiot like you.
But, DO guard your words. They're a right of free expression, but others may wish to freely express themselves and turn you into a human Bachman pretzel, with all of your joints bending in new and interesting ways. And I'm dead serious about THAT too.
@armygirl – yeah, its not going to be pleasant......I think I am going to try to get a part time job at the local 7-11, or whatever they call it over here, until this mess gets sorted out! lol
What about 90% of the wealth of the country belonging to 1% of the population? And they outright refuse to even entertain the idea of higher taxes. Why? They would have to give the money they stole from US back.
what would we ever do without our multi-trillion dollar food and drug oversight?? MCDONALDS!!! YAY!!!! SIZZLER!!!! YAY!!!! TYLENOL!!! YAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYYA
When your obesity and diabetes get too bad, you will certainly be eligible for Social Security Disability payments, don"t worry.
Probably die from salmonella and ecoli in the food that your GOP friends slop into your bun. Under Obama we've had a decent FDA, lacking under Bush and his gov by crony. When your kids get sick because some creep cut corners and there was no inspection or oversight you'll blame any one but Boehner and co. But hey, they keep insisting we don't need a Pure Food and Drug Act anyway. Business can be trusted to keep our food safe. Like in China.
Melamine in our tacos! YAAAY!!!
Wait ... what? 🙂
What would we get? Toxic drugs, salmonella for breakfast, children dying from E. Coli O157:N7. People disabled for life from that same infection, due to kidney failure. Airplanes banging into each other in the air. Airplanes falling apart in mid air.
Toxic releases from industrial facilities. Nuclear meltdowns.
What a pretty world the planet Stupidia is! Perhaps you should move back there and stop trying to make our world like yours.
@effelbee: Yeah, but there won't be anyone there to take his SSD claim.
Love how this article blames Boehner. What about the Democrats? The Republicans offered a 1 week stop game but the Democratically controlled Senate and WH chose not to accept it. Further, the Democrats had the chance to pass a budget last year when they controlled both houses in Congress AND the WH, yet they punted and did nothing in the hopes it would politically castrate the Republican House. SO actually any fallout from a Govt shut down would be 100% the Democrats fault.
Bull. A one week deal so they can pull this blackmail again next week? Only this time claiming they took care of the troops? Please...Kudos to the Dems for calling it what it is, cheap blackmail. And a blackmailer only demands more each time.
I don't see how you can blame either side. These politicians are getting paid by our dollars. In the private sector, you work it out. You don't send everyone home when you get agree.
Wrong, bush started this mess years ago... He was handed a positive balance but good ole bush ran us into the ground. Get for real Tim.
You forgot to mention all the social policies the Republicans included in their one week solution. Put all the facts out there please.
Tim, kinda hard for the Dems to pass a budget last year when the Repubs filibustered every attempt to death. just sayin'...
The republicans were threatening to shut down the government from the day they took office. So we're not blaming them – they took credit for it already.
CD, you ARE A DOLT. The Democrats had a SUPERMAJORITY immune to filabustering. So you have just been exposed as a fraud!!!
Go back to school and learn some politics.
@Jw – Give me a break with your "Clinton had a balanced budget" nonsense. Clinton's so called "balanced budget" was the BYPRODUCT of a loose credit policy of the privatley controlled Central Bank and Allan Greenspan. The Central Bank poured TRILLIONS in cheap money into the economy which caused first the DOT COM bubble and then the HOUSING BUBBLE (which we are all paying for now).
SOOOOO Mr. Clinton's so called "surplus" was an illusion and ignorant Americans are led to believe it was a good thing. IT WAS NOTHING MORE THEN RUN AWAY CREDIT WHICH CREATED A FALSE BUDGET SURPLUS. A MONKEY could have been POTUS and there would have been a "surplus".
GET REAL AND GO BACK TO SCHOOL so you know what REALLY HAPPENED (and yes, I will concede Bush was an idiot, but Clinton was CRIMINAL).
Blame doesn't matter an more. Spending has been out of control for many years so what are we going to do? The 'War' on America thought to be based in Iraq, Afganistan, Pakistan, Lybia, etc. is actually an economic war targeting the US economy. A by-product of this economic war is splitting our population and having us argue among ourselves while getting further into the unsustainable situation we are in. We're broke and only getting deeper in debt. We are playing right into the hands of those that want to see us fall. Think Russia. Outspend your enemy. Our attention is diverted to the many world events that deserve our attention but we have to not lose focus on starting to taking care of ourselves. In the very near future, we will not be able to support/defend ourselves and be useless to help anyone else.
@Tim, way to pick up the baton of the republican posturing. "we offered and one week extension... " that happened to contain limitations on abortion. nice attempt at claiming the high ground, but thats a classic political move, not a sincere attempt to avoid a shut down. If Boehner submits an extension without a bunch of gotchas, then we'd be able to move forward. Once they submitted their extension, the shut down was all but guaranteed.... yes Boehner hold >50% of the blame in this, not all, but a majority.
@Tim: Once Scott Brown was elected, they lost the supermajority necessary to block a filibuster.
Darned facts...
Well said. To many people are so blinded by their democratic views that they are failing to see the real issue, the national debt! We can't continue to amass trillions forever, and a solution needs to be put in place now. I would also like to add, before going further, that it is an absolute crime that soldiers won't be payed.(thats messed up) But the issue really needs to be solved, because the government can't keep gaining debt. Oh and by the way, anyone with a brain knows that the reason the market collapsed was because of a poor housing market, which was created by mistakes in the Clinton administration.
One week extension so we can play this game over again, with all sorts of ugly strings attached? No, thank you. Get this done, and done properly, with no new tax cuts that have to be offset with budget cuts.
When the people in government that get paid the most can't figure out away to pay those that get paid the least we really need to reassess our values.
Tell that to the GOP and its rich puppetmasters.
Does anyone know a shortcut from I-95 to 295 in rush hour?
Turnpike
boehner's house????? Take the stuff to 1600 for crying out loud...or to NEVADA
Nah, it'll take to long to get there.
Agreed. PLUS Reid was part of the Trifecta of Dodd and Frank which supported the subprime lending which KILLED the Country.
If there was ever a time to storm the lawn and replace every single congressional asshat, including the president, his minions, and the House. Now is that time. It's nice to see the American People, paying the price for the morons in the government to play partisan war. Enough is enough, America is falling apart, and it's all due to money, lobbyism and partisanship. Republican, or Democrat, you're both wrong and need to go the way of the dinosaur.
It"s time to do what is going on over sea.Lets see who comes to our aid, when the police and military start shotting us.never the less its time to stand up to the government.its a shame in this country, people loseing jobs, homes and our government goes to another country to aid those people,in stead of helping our own.I AM SICK AND TRIED OF ALL THE BUT S.........WHEN ARE THE PEOPLE GOING TO STAND UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THE TEA PARTY WAS GOING TO BE FOR THE PEOPLE AT FIRST,BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE ANOTHER POLITICAL GROUP.WE NEED A PEOPLE PARTY FOR THE PEOPLE ,BY THE PEOLPE BEFORE ITS TO LATE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AROUND ,EVERYTHING IS CRAZY,OR IS THIS ANOTHER SIGN OF THE TIMES,TO THE END
Both sides should be ashamed of themselves. The "nonessential" get hurt, including those who defend it. While the politicians who can't comprise get paid over $14k per month for NOT DOING the jobs they were elected for. Who is nonessential? Maybe if politicians were paid for performance and not buy special interest we would be in better shape!
Make sure you remember this at election time.
Natuional park? Never been to one. Vacation? Never had one unless you count taking a few days off from work but that's with no pay.
I'd really much rather be able to afford a doctor or dentist. Haven't been to one of those in 20+ years. I'd like to know if I will freeze to death next winter because fuel is so high. Gas prices are so bad now I may not be able to get to work. The choice is food or fuel. Welfare checks? Never got one. Never asked but I guess I'm more than eligible. That still won't get me a doctor or dentist though.
I'm so tired of trying to figure out who is lying the least when I vote. I think all of them should be thrown out and maybe random names drawn from a hat. Can't do any worse than it is now.
Although I don't understand the point of your sob story, I agree with pulling names from a hat. Regardless if you pulled out a name of a fifth grader or a rabbit we couldn't be in any worse of a position.
If you're really hurting that badly, maybe it's time to sell the computer your posting this on and cancelling the high speed internet.
Before anyone asks, The Right thing is to just pull your head out of your ass, and make some damn sense. Common sense should run the country, not beliefs and ideology.
I agree with you 100%. Recently, I visited the us capital and watched an excellent movie on the history and promise of representative democracy via Congress. The point of this movie was that, despite our ideological differences, we as a nation find a way to compromise and move forward in the best interest of the nation. Perhaps it's time for our members of congress to watch this movie playing in the visitor center of their own building.
On another note, one of my students asked me why so much of the capital was closed to. The public even after you passed through security, to which I replied "exactly."
Effelbee = troll
This is your way of defending your unsupportable statistics about 40% on welfare and 40% government payroll, is it? Your cleverness is underwhelming.
So someone who calls you out for making stupid comments is a troll? Go back to elementary school and try to finish up and make something of yourself.
Time for the wealthy to take out their checkbooks and write their Tax check to the government. The wealthy need to pay taxes now.
This is potentially something that could reshape us forever if the government shuts down. Positive and negative. Just like walmart shutting down, the government is a business, first and foremost. There is an urgent need for a new business model for our country, a new government. This is not going to keep working.
Coffee Party needs to rise up and take control on issues, not ideaology.
I'm sorry, but the government is not a business. Our government is the manifestation of an enlightened ideal that we the people must govern ourselves in order to move society forward. Unlike walmart, the goal of our government is not to sell a product, but to instead provide the environment where we can all have the opportunity to pursue life, liberty and happiness.
Ideological thinking on both sides (Republican and Democrat) have turned our government into a business for hire. This we should no longer tolerate as a country.
For starters why dump trash on the house speakers front lawn when its not all his fault.. If anytheing its the dems for not passing it last year when they had more power in congress. But then again.. Id hate to see the dems make the finacial budget and put us more in debt.
Can you still do that cool thing where you hit the jukebox and music starts playing?
