The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):
- The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
- Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.
- As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
- You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
- Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
- Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.
How would a government shutdown anger you?
Seriously this is getting ridiculous, first the oil executives get a giant bonus since 2010 was their "Safest year ever" but oil prices are still rising. Then we go to Libya to protect interests but we are only testing more weapons and spending more American tax dollars. Then this "shutdown" might initiate which mean the govt will be almost on lockout status like the NFL. Don't we pay taxes so these idiots get paid to direct money into our economy to stabilize it? It is only a matter of time before a revolution like that which took place in Egypt, takes place here.
Oil executives get a giant bonus but bp still isnt paying the gulf coast what should be payed for the oil spill. They are getting raises but the gulf is getting no help. Well in my opinion 2010 by far wasnt the safest year ever! I live on the gulf coast and not only did it effect our economy here they also raise our gas prices. I feel that the old companys should give us some kind of a break!
Trump we need you
Wow. Celebrity Apprentice to Celebrity President? I don't think he's the best choice.
Ron Paul is the only politician left in DC with any semblance of a moral compass. The only person left working for "we the people".
I would take Trump over Ron Paul any day. At least he has been there and done that with nearly going broke and building it all back up.
"...and the government will hang by a string." Looking more likely every passing day.
A lot of things will be effected by this shutdown but Im sure that tomorrow when I receive my paycheck almost half of my earnings will be going to state and federal taxes! Why is it were still having to fund this government but they have nothing to show for it??? This is crazy!
Half! What tax bracket are you in?
Read my lips, this is a disaster,a partial government shut down will cost tax payers more money to fix the problems this shut down will cause... And some mistakes can never be corrected...
Wasn't it Thomas Jefferson that stated : A little revolution, now and again, is a good thing!"
He also said when a people fear the government you have tyranny, when the government fears the people you have democracy. Our gov doesn't fear the people enough.
@Bob
No...he never said that.
@JBH
Yes, yes he did in a 1786 letter to James Madison.
If the government had worked out the budget when they were supposed to ( almost a year ago) This would not
be happening! This has got to be the worst administration I have ever seen. Both Dems and Reps need to
start thinking and doing for the American people and the military families instead of helping everyone around
the world. They are a joke. Both parties should be ashamed. Get rid of all of them and start fresh.
50+ IDEOLOGICAL RIDERS have been added to the budget by the Republicans. This riders include not funding a piddly amount to Planned Parenthood. Some people actually like this because the "believe" that Planned Parenthood uses federal dollars to perform abortions. THEY DO NOT. AGAINST THE LAW. They use the money for contraception. Cancer screenings and women's healthcare. Another rider is to not let the EPA fund clean air and greenhouse gas regulations. Republicans asked for 31 million in cuts. Dems agreed on 31 million cuts but REMOVE THE D#MN idealogical RIDERS. This is about the BUDGET!! Not policy. Koch Bros fund the Tea Party. Tea Partiers repeat the chant.. "Shut down the gooberment." Koch Bros have the republican politicians in their pocket. KOCH wants the EPA regulations removed so they can pollute our air and water with no recourse. When Dems put a budget together at the end of 2010, the REPUBS put together a FILIBUSTER. Dems backed down because they knew that it wasn't going to get done. So now, we can't pay our servicemen because John Boehner the Republican speaker of the house who is the next most powerful guy in DC next to Obama doesn't have the balls to stand up to the Tea Party Republicans and Koch Bros and say.. "Now is not the time to push our +50 plus Ideological Riders to the bill."
You are 100% correct! Anyone who doesn't see this clearly is definitely blind.
Agreed.
Let's look at it a different way. The US will find out if the people depend on the government, more than the government depends on the the people. If the pain is too great, the US public, and the world will know for sure that they've become hopelessly dependant on their government just to live their lives.
With regard to the national parks 'closing'; who exactly, is going to stop people from entering?
If a park is closed, entering said park is trespassing.
As a matter of legal fact, sure, but as a matter of legal practice, nobody will care? I can't think of a policeman who could be bothered arresting hikers during the shutdown, and supposing there is such a special policeman, I can't think of a judge who would hand down any great punishment for a person peacefully trespassing on land they indirectly owned anyway.
The shutdown is a holiday from government. Nobody telling you not to walk on the grass. Nobody manning the boom gates, charging you to see what you already own. It's life and liberty with only the essentials of governance. It's liberty, man!
You moron, it is not about who is going to stop them from going. For one all the major entrances have gates that will be closed and locked. It is more about who is not going to be there to collect the fees that amount to nearly 32 MILLION per day in income. You should try that math when you are worried about your small government. It is true after all that you do have to spend some money to make money. Sometimes you also get EXACTLY what you pay for!
I am not going to pay my taxes this year. We don't seem to get much for them anyway. Now we won't get anything. To hell with this stupid government – they just get elected to argue with each other, for 4 or 8 years, and then they want to get elected again. Wise up people, they are just scamming you!
Then you are not allowed to do the following:
Drive on public roads
Call the police
Call the fire department
Complain about air quality
Complain about bad food
Buy a house
That's a good start.
You're taxes don't do anything indeed...use your brain. It's there for a reason.
ok.
And since there are government subsidies to farmers to grow certain crops and food and other subsidies that are also paid to help to control costs. We also grant you the right to pay ABSOLUTE FULL PRICE on every item that you buy and you can pay for each of the services that JBH has mentioned above. A toll for each time you back out of your driveway. A fee for when someone has broken into your house since there will be a private security firm and not local police answering your call. A fire will cost you everything unless you are paying for that privately owned service as well. You can pay for private trash pickup. You can wonder if any of your food is safe to eat if you didn't grow it in your back yard. And unless you already own your home outright. You can be prepared to write the check for what you owe on that as well, because if FHA is not going to be there to insure the loans then you can expect that all the banks will start calling the notes. And yes if you look into your mortgage, your note is callable at any time and for any reason.
Good luck in the your new no gov. world.
My Husband I are supposed to close on our first home May 5th! We have been sailing through the process of an FHA loan and recieved our first committment letter and approval. Tomorrow is the appraisal. The same day Congress will single handedly decide whether I will get my first home or not. đź™ Gov't shutdown affects almost everyone. Somehow.
Oh well, next time have good credit or put your 20% down so you won't have to get a govt backed loan w/MIP
@Angie
Do you also kick puppies? Wow, you are really a mean and selfish person.
@ JBH What's wrong with kicking puppies? And how is my comment selfish? I'm just being realistic.
@Angie
Time to take a look at the times.
My parents built a 2100sq ft home in 1976 for about 65K. That is about $31 a square foot. At the time my parents were making about $30K per year. Now a home is about $100 a square foot and the average family is not making even $50K per year. So housing has tripled in price and incomes have not matched pace (I would say that that it has doubled). So basically if you take away FHA, you can effectively take away about 50-60% of buyers.
Now lets do some math on that as well.
1 house =
2 real estate agents,1 mortgage officer, 1 processor, 1 underwriter, 1 appraiser, 1 home inspector, 1 roofer +2 employees, 1 brick mason +3 employees (vinyl is about the same), 1 electrician, 1 plumber, 1 framer + 2 employees, 1 lumber sales guy, 1 brick sales guy, 1 roofing sales guy, 1 electrical sales guy, 1 plumbing sales guy, 1 concrete truck driver, 1 landscape guy, 1 flooring guy, 1 flooring sales guy, 2 drywall guys, 1 drywall sales guy, 2 painters, 1 paint sales guy, 1 trimwork guy, 1 trimwork sales guy, 2 HVAC guys, 1 HVAC sales guy, 1 cabinet guy, 1 cabinet supplier, 1counter top supplier, 1 appliance guy, 1 appliance delivery and install guy. That is before you buy anything for the house once you move in
That is 44 direct impact people for any new home that is sold. That is for ONE HOUSE. Housing is probably the single largest reaching employment opportunity that this country has. I am not for all of the REALLY BAD loans that were made over the last 5 or so years, but to turn the tap off is even more fiscally irresponsible than any of the fallout we have seen so far.
I am not kicking any animals, I just wish people would be educated about the effects before they decide that the cost outweighs the benefit. I think that there are a lot of items we can work on that are PORK, but I think that just because you are not in need of a product you should not try to shut if off completely for those that may need it.
Tea partiers want to shut down the government so they can make a statement...
How stupid and immature! They are hurting our country and putting jobs at risk!
If only they would shut down!
... and lefty liberals want a bureaucrat in everyone's back pocket to watch over their shoulder. Eat the Left wing!
Looks like we're heading into an election year. Remember, folks, neither Dems nor GOP are on your side!
How about we get rid of money and just trade labor, possessions, whatever for things we need and/or want. Cut out the green middle man. One day the public masses will finally realize there's no true value behind those pieces of paper but instead just perceived value, and the money bubble will burst. The question is when and why.
Agreed
I say if the government can't decide on a budget and will still get paid then they should be loaded on to a jet and flown over to Afghanistan and take up arms and defend our country and maybe do something useful because I can't see them doing anything useful yet.
