10 things that could ruin your day if the government shuts down

The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):

  • The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
  • Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.

  • As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
  • You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
  • Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
  • Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.

How would a government shutdown anger you?

"It's time for the govt to get serious about talking the national debt.. here's the numbers"

You can't have a serious conversation about this with people who only want to cut spending slightly and not raise taxes at all.

It's like trying to have a conversation about handgun violence with Jared Loughner.
Cutting $60B from a $4T budget without raising taxes is sheer political posturing and opportunism. Shutting the government down over a $30B disagreement is even further opportunism, because *then* the government can't spend ANY money on programs that the right-wingers don't like.

They also can't spend it on programs that the RWs DO like so you can see the idiocy at work here.

My solution to this disagreement is to put penalty on these congress people!! their pays don't start till there is a resolution!
maybe this will provide incentive to not drag this on!!

Do you believe in God ? Do you believe in protecting this country? Do you believe in keeping most of your hard-earned
money for yourselves ? If you answered yes to any of those, you are that much closer to thinking like a Republican.
Hollywood can afford to be Dems, because they make MILLIONS ! Vote for a person who has actually run something
in their life (successfully) next time, would 'ya ?

Not sure I understand this reasoning. Republicans have only increased the gap between the rich and middle class. So why again would we vote this way?

Beltway insiders may feel some pain?

That's such a shame. I'll feel bad about it all weekend.

Only ignorant backwards individuals talk race n color. Obviously they havent evolved, so don't bother let them get frustrated that they look like idiot babbons. Perhaps in 20 years they will catch up to us who has evolved.

...furthermore it is ludicrous to shut the government down NOW over this right after collecting ~$3T worth of taxes from the American people...and putting millions of people out of work, both directly and indirectly. It's a simple case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

It's like taking your girlfriend out to dinner, getting her to go in half on the expense up front, and then refusing to order anything if she doesn't agree to eat what you want to eat. It's just plain stupid. You can't have a reasonable discussion with such people.

If this budget would have been passed last year when it was supposed to be we would not be talking about a shut down. I place all the blame on the Dems for not doing their jobs last year. It's shameful!

Put simply, it's out of my control. As such, fretting...or anything else...over it is a waste of my time and energy.
If you've put yourself in a position wherein you rely completely on government, money, electricity, etc., you've made a big mistake.
Putting yourself in a position wherein you can survive without these things is both constructive, and within your control. If it all collapses, my family and close friends (including grandparents, great grandparents) will fine. This doesn't mean I don't make use of these things. It simply means that if they disappear tomorrow...or today...or in 5 minutes, my "clan" will go on.

I am working oversees or I would gladly go to the capital to give them a piece of my mind. I will just have to let them know when I vote them out.

This is all just ridiculous! When did we suddenly get to the stage where the world will stop if the federal government doesn't do anything for a couple of days? Shut it down and leave it down until the deficit is eliminated.

I think they should take congress's money and give it to our troops.
Because that is wrong on so many levels.

The last time this happened (1995) it was followed by the first surplus in decades. Unfortunately the amorous Billy Clinton got credit for it. Credit should have gone to the uncompromising republican congress.

As a wife of a marine, I can say as far as military pay goes, this won't be much of a change. I can't even count how many times we have gone without pay. We are still owed thousands in back pay. Way to go government!! I guess the people that defend your freedom are dispensable. No military pay, how about no military? Lets see how well that works out.
