10 things that could ruin your day if the government shuts down

The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):

  • The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
  • Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.

  • As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
  • You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
  • Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
  • Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.

How would a government shutdown anger you?

I see a lot of people taking aim and playing the blame game, however, if nothing changes then nothing changes. This ENTIRE country is in for a whopper if it does not get its spending and budget under control, and I'm not just talking about the present moments. I am talking about the entire economical structure and future of the children of this country. We need a real plan Americans, and not just some bandaged approach. How can anyone look in the face of a child and say, "Well, I screwed up your future. Good luck with that." What are we teaching our children about saving money and economics? Also, I have something to say to the people who did not vote: Thanks, what you did not do is what you've gotten.

Can't pass a budget that should have been passed last year. Congress and the President will still receive their paychecks. So what do they care. If the government shutsdown the only personnel receiving paychecks should be military personnel. Take Linda Sanchez (D-CA) for example, she can't live on $174,000 a year salary. Really? And these are the people who make the budget.

Let's see, 10 things that could ruin my day. How about the fact I won't be able to process personnel actions for members of a uniformed service who are responsible for the health & safety of underserved populations, oh– and the fact I WON'T GET PAID.

The DC Metro area was one of the last areas with a semi-healthy economy, but this shutdown will take care of that. Congrats, politicians.

The last Congress was supposed to pass this budget in April 2010. They chose not to, and chose not to address it for the remainder of last year. / So why is it now Republicans' fault for wanting to cut spending, when they were never supposed to pass this budget in the first place?

    <<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>
Ok, now that we have established that, can we get to a solution?
Can we organize as citizens and protest, or is the frappin' TV so damned distracting that we can't get our asses off the couch? Can we pull it together as citizens and show our Government HOW IT"S GOING TO BE, not how THEY want to roll?
Coffee, tea, strawberry shakes, whatever.... we are so divided they can easily do what they please and we allow it!
The world is changing before our eyes, we will soon become a Third World nation, Poverty, No Health Care and a crumbling infrastructure. Bravo... the New World Order is going down right in front of us and most don't even see it.

I'm ready to get together on 4/20 and protest in DC or locally or wherever! We have internet, Let's USE it to our advantage and organize ourselves without ANY Party affiliation. Those who are elected are led by the lobbyists and Corporations... time for that to end. Let's get it together people or we won't have a future worth two wooden nickels (yeah the FED needs to be audited, too!)

I do not believe the color of our president has anything to do with the shape that our country is in lets face it he did put the united states in the hole we are in today , that was done by our former leaders that spend 700.00 on a hammer, we need to restructure the white house and make our government work for us the Americans and stop fighting everyone else' s wars.. we need to build refinery's and start making our own gas we need to close our borders and protect whats ours.. we need to clean up our own back yard before we cleanup everyone else's... We need to focus on fixing our legal and our health care systems first and foremost and stop all the free hand outs to everyone that is lazy and wants to jump on welfare put a cap on it 6 months ... as far as the people in the white house getting paid is wrong they are over paid much like all the pro athletes i mean c'mon the salary's these people make is stupid ... we need to get back up and dust our self's off and make America what is was intended to be... A great place to raise a family and prosper hell the regular working people can not do that anymore.. our people in the white house needs to pull thier heads out and start working for our country like they are suppose too..God Bless our Troops !!! may god protect them and bring them home safe...

Everybody is forgetting that our Homeland Security Agents will be working for free as well. Payroll is a non essential job so nobody will be there to process checks. How safe do you feel when our government won't even take care of the people who are protecting our borders?
