The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):
- The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
- Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.
- As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
- You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
- Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
- Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.
How would a government shutdown anger you?
We should take our trash and leave it on the governor. Were are the grownups in this
There is no conspiracy. Roughly half of the Senators work for Makers, who want to work to create useful things and don't want to pay a higher percentage in taxes for being more useful and productive (if you disagree, just don't buy whatever they're selling), and the other half work for Takers, who want more money than they're willing to earn in the free market. Their interests are naturally opposed. The reality is that a majority of Americans are living beyond our means and our nation is heading towards bankruptcy because of these massive unearned payouts. A compromise between the Democrats and Republicans is not what's needed. Even the entire Republican program is not enough to dig us out of this debt. The Democrats might as well be on PCP for all the logic they're bringing.
Our defenses being down, the rich staying rich, poor staying poor, anger taking over in America!
Lawmakers get paid: They shouldn't.
Nonessential workers furloughed: Get a private sector job.
Government contractors: Get a private sector client.
Dept of Defense: Withdraw troops and release them from their tours of duty. Bring them back from all over the world and turn them loose as civilians. Not saying we don't need a military; just about a tenth of the one we have. Stop playing world police and people will stop wanting to attack us in the first place.
DC trash pickup: Pay for your own trash pickup. I do.
Federal services: No new FHA loans: put 20% down or keep renting. No new SBA lending: if you're serious about doing business raise your own capital. IRS: Disband entirely. Google Ron Paul for instructions. Other permits: Isn't it a little scary we need so many "permits" to live our lives in the first place?
Social Security: What questions are there? Take your check and put it in the bank. How hard is that?
Department of Health and Human Services: Let the ridiculously wealthy drug companies fund their own research.
Doesn't Save Taxpayers: Umm...how do you figure that? Okay, there's shutdown expenses. What about after that? As for the rest, cry me a river. Oooh, the gift shop won't open! My life is ruined!
In summary: SHUT IT DOWN! I think many Americans will be surprised at just how little we need a lot of things that currently cost a lot of money.

Lawmakers get paid: They shouldn't
-They should get the wage of the average federal worker, which is a lot LESS than the fake numbers tossed out by some. It is actually about 1/4th what their current salary is.
Nonessential workers furloughed: Get a private sector job.
–Since you have no idea about the legal definition of "essential", you lose points. Also, do tell–where are those private sector jobs you speak of?
Government contractors: Get a private sector client.
–Again, you have no clue. Contractors are in place to avoid paying a decent wage to those people who work in the federal sector. Minimum wage to repair $50M jets? Not smart!
Dept of Defense: Withdraw troops and release them from their tours of duty. Bring them back from all over the world and turn them loose as civilians. Not saying we don't need a military; just about a tenth of the one we have. Stop playing world police and people will stop wanting to attack us in the first place.
-I would agree here. What we need is a system like they use in the rest of the world–mandatory service after HS for at least two years, whether in the military or in a federal facility. Sam Nunn proposed that decades ago and was told it was socialism to expect a citizen to serve one's country.
DC trash pickup: Pay for your own trash pickup. I do.
-Um, they do pay a fee, but all services in DC are controlled/operated by federal employees who may well be furloughed.
–Permits are because stupid people insist on violating their neighborhoods with ugly structures, junk cars and illegal/dangerous substances. The rest of us need protection from the truly impaired. Would you want a circus tent in the middle of YOUR gated community?
Social Security: What questions are there? Take your check and put it in the bank. How hard is that?
-Again, there have to be eyes to process applications, etc. and to handle the non-electronic communication that the elderly prefer. There also has to be someone available to talk to people who refuse to RTFMs.
Department of Health and Human Services: Let the ridiculously wealthy drug companies fund their own research.
–That is NOT what they do.
Doesn't Save Taxpayers: Umm...how do you figure that? Okay, there's shutdown expenses. What about after that? As for the rest, cry me a river. Oooh, the gift shop won't open! My life is ruined!
-The gift shop is an easy reference. It is the behind-the-scenes things you have to worry about.
In summary: SHUT IT DOWN! I think many Americans will be surprised at just how little we need a lot of things that currently cost a lot of money.
-Not at first, but sooner or later it will be evident how much really is needed. You don't notice what is missing till you personally need it. This isn't the rural, tiny nation of 230 years ago with only a few million inhabitants mostly living on farms with a far-away leadership that communicated via written letters carried by horse to a regional newspaper to publish (not that most of the population then could read).
The dynamics of government today are way different and the needs are more than you could ever imagine.
Ok, sooo the people who can't work together to make a budget get paid while the WORKERS get temp laid off? Really? That's really going to help the economy. Those in Congress wanted that job, they and their supporters paid to get that job, and now they don't want to do their jobs and hundreds of thousands of average Americans will suffer for their childish inaction. Stop angling personal and party objectives and do what you need to. For the people has turned into for your selves.
Control spending, CUT THE SALARY TO THE DEMIGODS THAT ARE SAYING' let them eat cake!' THEY EXIST ON TAXPAYER MONEY AND LIVE WELL. TAKE IT AlL AWaY!
If there are 800,000 "non-essential" government workers, then fire them all, they're non-essential.
If they can't agree on a budget here in Canada they call an election , sure it wastes tax payers money but nothing gets shut down at all 4 eclections in 7 years and not a single shutdown.
2 party system is totally shot.
US = Egypt
This is what you get when you appoint a POS like obama to run a country that he was not born in. Shove that down your throat and swallow. Or you all believe he is a saint still? To date he has spent over 2 million dollars hiding his birth certificate instead of 12$ to shut the american public up. Nuff said!
where do you get your information from? Social Security Disability offices will be open and checks will go out
If the government shuts down, why will we still be paying Federal Income Tax. Where else in the service industry would you continue paying for services when none are received in return...I'm going to continue paying for my refuse removal service even though they've stopped picking up my trash.
Well this is really like who will get elected . It is kindergarten politics . Forgive my lack of english but I do believe they are having a show down just so they can make it harder on the people who work day and night 2 protect and serve every one in this country and beyond. I think so being childish get your mind normal and think what is easy cut the pay from the people like the politics . Because want 2 save money there is money. And then trying 2 cut for woman health since when would womans health be the trigger. Same right for all. Woman men child etc. So think beyond ur own wallet and look at the working public . My partner works hard and just like any other they deserve pay
just wondering why the last three presidents didnt put their life on the line to protect this country? Is it good enough to run not defend?
MOST of our presidents never served, so give me a break.
Then again I wouldn't mind seeing about 800,000 people stomping a mudhole in some congress @$$.
