The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):
- The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
- Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.
- As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
- You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
- Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
- Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.
How would a government shutdown anger you?
Ok this started political and then it went into conspiracies and racism. Are you kidding me? Everyone on here that is talking like a sane human being keep going. Its your right. Anyone on here saying its cause hes black please just go back out to your outhouse and continue feeling up your sister/mother. And all of you who say this is a conspiracy, please crawl back into your 2012 bunker which is just the same bunker you built for y2k back in 2000. I pray the door breaks and u can never get out. Jeez.
What?
Whatever!
@Josie
Go play with your star wars toys and protest Utah's state gun.
You need people like me to pay for your health care when obamas new health care plan begins. Doesn't matter how healthy or unhealthy I am. I will be able to pay for my own health costs.
Implying , "I live in the south makes me a hick" is the exact same thing as, "obama is a monkey, because he is black" Great assumptions.
hi
why are you all insulting each other , aren't we supposed to be united in this situation
@Mike and josie- If your opinions had any merit or value they might be worth hearing. Unfortunately, they don't.
Looks like communist plot to give tax cheaters more time to file tax returns. Right comrad?
Let's just go ahead and sell some land to our allies, for money. Let's sell Puerto Rico, and Cuba, and Guam, and all those USELESS islands.. Our government isn't looking past their own paychecks, because it's all they care about.
This is a load off bull I've been waiting for the fort Sumter reenactment. I'm a confederate reenacter and so far I've spey over a thousand dollars on preparing for this event I even took the whole week off ofwork to do this event. I called down to fort Sumter yesterday and asked what would happen and they told me that they would be closed. I also asked what about all the reenacters that have spent alot of money preparing for this event and they basically told me " well there sol". I wouldlike to get a fundraiser together to raise money to keep the fort open for the event since it is the 150th remembrance of the bombardment of fort Sumter which is one of the biggest events this year.
Don't get yourself dependent on the government then you won't be effective by the shut down. America is about being independent not communism.
Then why does cnn and msnbc have commercials to buy Chinese stocks and invest in Chinese companies on their channels?
good luck and i am happy i dont live in US ANYMORE............... WITH A BUNCH OF BRAINWASHED PEOPLE...........MAN WHO HAVE NO IDEA
Okay Josie.......I mean Jack
I live on Social Security. I have Medicare and Medicaid. I get prescriptions for diabetic insulin as well as 15 others. I have a chore person for my bad back problems and inability to do simple tasks around the house. I live in a Section 8 Housing by HUD and what happens to my rent costs? Do I have to move because I cannot pay full rent? The government supports my life. What do I do if these benefits are canceled because the government shuts down? How do I live and where. How do I buy groceries to eat. How do I take care of my diabetes and mental problems? Scary! How can I pack and move when I can't bend over without screaming? How do I live?
For over a year congress has had the ability to cut the expenses and come up with a balanced budget. Instead they have accomplished nothing. They are acting more like a couple of street gangs arguing over their turf than representatives of the citizens of the USA. They are an embarrasment to the citizens of this great nation. We should hold back their pay until they cut the pork and come up with a balanced budget. I guarantee if they knew their pay was going to be cut they would come up with a balanced budget so fast it would make your head spin. What a bunch of self endulged idiots!
@Josie
You must not be from down south. We eat the biggest breakfasts in the nation, if you mean we waste food and throw most of it away.. Maybe the ethics side would be messed up, but we wont loose our breakfast. I think you should be proud of the change you can count on that you voted in office.
Nice – another article blaming Republicans for a shutdown. Why don't they dump their trash on the White House lawn or Reid's lawn. Sounds more appropriate.
Please don't shut down the government, because both of my parents work for the government and I'm scared of loosing my home and not being able to buy food.
