10 things that could ruin your day if the government shuts down

The list of collateral effects of a potential government shutdown keeps growing and people are none too pleased about it. Here are just a few of the negative impacts that could arise if Congress and the White House fail to reach an agreement on the budget (click here to view in chart form):

  • The lawmakers who hold the cards will still get paid. Their staffers might be furloughed, though. That has prompted a few lawmakers to announce they'll refuse shutdown pay,but even that has elicited critiques of political posturing.
  • Roughly 800,000 federal workers won't get paid because they're considered nonessential and therefore, the first to be furloughed. That includes people who work in national parks because they'll be closed, ruining countless long family road trips. And it's not just the loss of income that hurts - for many, it's being labeled dispensable when they know their jobs are anything but nonessential.

  • As the shutdown looms, some political leaders are taking the opportunity to fundraise and rally their supporters. The executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an appeal asking for a minimum $5 donation saying the organization wants to raise $100,000 in the next 36 hours.
  • You'll still get your Social Security checks but don't expect anyone to be around to answer your questions about benefits. The people who take questions on Social Security and Medicare questions will not be at work and most government websites will shut down or have limited functionality.
  • Various agencies with the Department of Health and Human Services will operate in a patchwork fashion. The National Institutes of Health will not accept new patients or start new clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration won't operate at full capacity but will have some inspectors on staff. As a result, all FDA inspections of food processing facilities and drug manufacturing plants will be prioritized by risk.
  • Word is getting around that a government shutdown doesn't actually save taxpayers money. For one, it will cost the government money to ensure a smooth transition to a shutdown. Then there's the lost revenue from a variety of sources, from government services to gift shops in government-run attractions such as Yosemite National Park and DC's National Gallery of Art.

How would a government shutdown anger you?

I am sadden by all of this and blame the politicians in Washington for this particular issue (all of them doesn't matter if they are republican, democrate, tea party or independant). You need to start acting a representatives of the people (all people) and care about what happends to your fellow person. So my plee to you Washington is find a solution to this issue and then figure out how to work together to move this country forward.

On non-essential personnel...really...who decided that you the politicians aren't, because at this point you are! So in my humble opinion, the people picking up the trash in DC should be paid before you, because they are providing a valuable service and they are productive!

My sister and her husband are both active duty in the military. They have 2 small boys... If this happens, what are they going to live off of? The commissary on base is not going to just give food away based on pity of not being paid!! How are they going to expect to pay for anything?? This is like being expected to go to work every day, still occurring everyday expenses and not getting paid, gas, daycare, food... This is going to have a HUGE impact on our military and their families!!! This is a horrible shame our country still treats our government employee’s, especially our military families who would die to protect our country, like crap. While the ones they are trying to protect the most just idly sit by and let it happen. There are some days I am ashamed to be an American!!

SO YOU CAN'T GO TO THE GRAND CANYON THIS WEEKEND – GO TO VEGAS OR BETTER YET, GO SHOPPING INSTEAD. IT'LL HELP THE ECONOMY MORE.

THE SHUTDOWN WILL LOOK LIKE A SMALL INCONVENIENCE TO MOST PEOPLE AND THUS IT DOESN'T MATTER. IN A FIAT ECONOMY LIKE OURS, DEBT ENSURES OUR INFLATION STAYS STABLE BECAUSE THOSE WE OWE THE MONEY TO WILL TRY TO ENSURE THAT WE DON'T INFLATE TO GET MORE MONEY OUT.

WORK WILL GO ON NEXT WEEK, AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT CONGRESS DON'T GET PAID FOR 3-4 DAYS, AND IT MAKES ALL OF THEM LOOK LIKE MORONS FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO DO THEIR JOB.

DEMS THAT ARE BLAMING REPS ARE MORONS FOR BEING DEMS IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU DON'T SEE REPS BLAMING DEMS, YOU SEE REPS BLAMING BAD BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FROM THE DEMS, AND TRYING TO STOP THE BLEEDING.

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO YOUR WIFE OR HUBBIE WHO LIVES BEYOND THEIR MEANS? YOU TELL THEM TO BUDGET.

    • The Truth in a nutshell

UM.... Do you watch the news, read the paper, read news online, or look out of your window... the reps are blaming the dems just as much as the dems are blaming the reps, and at the end of the damn day they are both responsible for this mess, and they are both to blame! So think before you speak again, and maybe think about taking the anti off the front of your name... Because you're clearly one of those partisan Kool aid drinking morons

Can you imagine what would happen to the healthcare system if a shutdown were to happen once Obamacare goes into effect? Don't worry grandpa, you'll get your fresh oxygen tank once the government starts back up again...

Will they pay extra for paying late and interest? We have to when we pay out taxes late.

Almost every post on this sublject disgusts me! Enough with the blame game! "it's republicans fault, no it's the democrats fault, no its the presidents fault" Jesus Christ it's everybody's fault! It's not a matter of party damn it it's congress' fault, it's the senate's fault, it's the president's fault, but most of all it's OUR fault! WE as Americans! US! We have let these people get away with everything, up to and including murder, with no consequences or responsibility, and now everyone is so shocked that nobody's taking responsibility to fix the damn budget? Why would they? Because at the end of the day most of you are drinking the same kool aid and when the republicans that arent getting anything done say it's the democrats fault, most of you republicans, with out researching your facts, say " Yea screw the democrats!!! They suck, they're going to ruin this country!" , and when the democrats, that also get nothing done, say it's the republican's fault you democrats do the same damn thing!!! Everyone in congress does not give a flying rat's ass about whats happening because they know at the end of thier term you kool aod drinking retards are gonna vote them right back into office, if you even vote at all!

I don't think anyone in Congress will seriously take the citizens of this country into consideration until they see a show of numbers outside their windows telling them to get the job done, and get it done now. But then, this is the U.S., not France or Spain or Egypt where people will actually take to the streets to make their point, so I doubt that will ever happen – I guess Facebook is all we have, and I just don't see a faceless social network having the same impact.

If there is a government shutdown and nonessential personnel will not be paid, then it sounds to me like military members should be returned home from Iraq/Afghanistan/wherever they are since if they are not going to be paid, they should not be on duty!

How many of you re elected Ted Kennedy after he got someone killed, fled the scene of the accident, then lied about it? How many re elected George W. after we all learned we went into Iraq under false pretences? Who called for the impeachment of any politician when he or she was involved in a serious scandal?

I am a federal employee who is considered an excepted employee and will continue to work which is wonderful but there is a problem now. My daughter is in the process of giving birth to triplets. If she does not have them before Monday and I take off to be there for this glorious event I will be charged AWOL. I have leave available, I give the government my time for free at least 1 – 2 hrs a day since I work 9-10 hrs 5 days a week and only get paid for 8. I do this willingly because I care about my team and my job. The government repays me by telling me I can not take off for the birth of my 3 granddaughters or I will suffer a blemish on an otherwise spotless record. Do you think I will vote for anyone in office in the next term? NO!! I am not alone in being tired of politics and politicians. Think about what you are telling us Americans...we do not matter to you!
