11 students die in Brazil school shooting; police kill suspect

[Update 3:43 p.m.] The number of students killed in a shooting rampage inside a school Thursday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has risen to 11, Rio de Janeiro's health secretary said.

Thirteen students remain injured, including four in critical condition, he said.

[Update 11:33 a.m.] A shooting rampage inside a school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killed 10 students before the suspect was fatally shot by police, the country's health minister said.

The student victims were nine girls and one boy, the health ministry told CNN. Eighteen others, 12 boys and six girls, were wounded. the government said.

Earlier reports erroneously stated that 13 had died at the Tasso da Silveira Municipal School.

[Update 10:47 a.m.] The suspect in the fatal shootings of at least 13 students and personnel of a school in Rio de Janeiro died after being shot by authorities, the state-run Agencia Brasil reported Thursday. He was identified as Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, 24, a former student at the school.

[Posted 10:08 a.m.] At least 13 people, both children and adults, were killed Thursday in a school shooting in Rio de Janeiro, CNN affiliate Record TV reported, citing civil police.

The incident happened at the Tasso da Oliveira Municipal School.

According to Record TV, a 24- or 25-year-old man entered the school in the morning armed with two handguns and opened fire on children and school personnel.

As the man fled, he ran into military police who were responding to the scene. There was a confrontation, and the man was shot, the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency reported. The man and the injured victims were taken to a hospital, the agency reported.

Really? Does every article on this site have to have a discussion about whether or not God exists? Can't we just focus on the fact that a tragedy has occurred and fellow human beings are in pain, and not get into a heated and pointless debate about the existance of a higher being? You're not gonna sway anyone's opinion on here either way.Geez...

Brazil is overwhelmingly Christian. This act of cowardice and terror happened in Brazil. Ergo – all Christians are cowardly terrorists.

Hey, if this had happened in the Middle East, you can bet the bank that Muslims would be getting painted with the same brush.

It's always funny how quickly atheists will respond to anything about God with inane comments like those shown here. The belief and responses mimic the zealotry of any "militant" religious type in a verbal sense (and one could argue a violent sense as well, just more cold and calculating, and worshipping money instead of a God).

Anyways, to answer your actual question – "free will". We have that choice between right and wrong.

People killing people..It's just too sad..These children are innocent and have done nothing wrong..I cannot understand it.. This beast was going from classroom to classroom and shooting the kids and even reloaded his firearms various times before getting shot by the police.. First time I am hearing of such after almost a decade living in Brazil, it really is scary!!!

    Children were shot and killed.

    Think of a small child.

Think of some man putting a gun to their head and how scared they would be.

And then think of the child as the man pulls the trigger.

Then consider how wrong what you said was . . .

It is too bad those kids did not have guns so they could shoot back. Now that guns are permitted on college campuses at least those students will be able to defend themselves. It is worth risking shooting a few innocent bystanders in order to ensure we kill the perpetrators

Yeah...like all those gun owners who came to the rescue when Giffords was shot in AZ, a state where there are no gun limits anymore! That NRA line is BS, looks good on paper, but its not based in reality. In reality there are no short cuts to justice, and a few innocent bystanders getting shot in order to get the perps is not acceptable!

Hello, I live in Brazil and this is a lack of respect for God, with humanity and with life. How can a person get into a school and shoot people defenseless and innocent people over there who are just trying to have a future and a good education. I can not imagine where else this world can get. It is the first time it happens here in Brazil, I hope it never happens again.

God did not create this man. This is the work of Satan. God created a beautiful world for us all to live in. It is by the sin of man and woman that has created these situations!!

So I guess God just created this "beautiful world" so men and women could sin it for his sick and twisted sense of amusement?

Yeah, because man's the inventor of sin. If God created everything, then he's responsible for sin. Doesn't sound like a perfect plan put together by a perfect omnipotent being.

None of this makes since...not to us. However, the harsh truth is that this life is disposable. God's design seems flawed to those that only have this life (eighty or so years). But in light of eternity, this life is a fleeting moment. Wise up, if there is a God capable of creating all that we know, and all that we know we don't know, how can we expect to comprehend why He allows bad things happen. If God allowed his son to die at 33, and his Son willingly laid down his life, doesn't it stand to reason that this life is NOT the purpose? I like passage in John 12:25 "Those who love their life will lose it, while those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life."
