Hamas claims responsibility for Israel attack, announces cease-fire

Hamas says it and other Palestinian factions have agreed to stop firing into Israel after Hamas claimed responsibility for shooting a missile that struck an Israeli bus Thursday.

The Hamas strike critically wounded a teenage boy on his way home from school. After not claiming responsibility for the attack earlier in the day, Hamas on Thursday night sent a message to reporters saying the strike was in retaliation for the killing of three Hamas leaders last weekend.

After the attack Thursday, and the firing of numerous mortars into Israel, the Israel Defense Forces "targeted nine terror-activity sites in the Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a news release. A military spokeswoman said later that IDF aircraft targeted three smuggling tunnels in southern Gaza in addition to the nine targets mentioned earlier.

The additional IDF strikes hit shortly after Hamas' cease-fire was scheduled to take effect, according to Hamas' Interior Ministry.

said it will stop after talking with other Palestinian factions following , according to Hamas' Interior Ministry.

Israel can offer Palestinian Arabs peace and a state but it can not shove it into the Palestinian collective throat against their will. It's unfortunate but a two-state solution will only become possible when the Palestinians will agree to have their own state alongside Israel.

How many hours will it take for the Palestinians to end this "cease fire"? Any guesses?

This was a guided missle attack on a SCHOOL BUS, not just a missle that hit an Israeli bus. Get your reporting straight.

You are incorrect, as usual; the reporting is accurate.

I think it is fair to assess the intent of Hamas. It was an anti-tank missile, with apparently no tanks in the vicinity. The bus was TARGETED.

What brave, strong Palestinian freedom fighters, to personally vanquish this horrible threat. They have personally prevented this teenaged boy from committing the crime against humanity known as "going to school." You Muslims must be so proud of what has happened.

I can only wonder why anyone would insist that Israel, or anyone, should have to negotiate with these Hamas monsters.

For two reasons: first, because Hamas is the legitimate democratically elected Palestinian government. Second, because the alternative to negotiations with the Palestinians is elimination of Palestinians.

I think you have really said it all when you named yourself: AMERICAN IDIOT.

There is no question at all that that is the only part of your statement that was correct.

Israel is clearly the monster and the gross human rights offender here; they always were and always will be... until and unless they agree to a 2 state solution.

And, that will NEVER happen as long as America remains an ally of Israel and people like you exist.

As for your second point, thinker, Israel does talk to the PA government in the West Bank. It is Hamas who refuse to deal with Israel, refuse to even recognize Israel. No one is calling for the elimination of the Palestinian people, only the marginalization of Hamas.

Interesting, my response to thinker's first point is gone, so I'll try again.

Winning an election does not give any party the right to commit criminal acts. The Nazis in Germany and the Fascists in Italy were both elected. How legitimate were they? Also check out the Palestinian election results. Hamas – 44%, Fatah – 41%, various others – 15%. Hardly a decisive result.

@John Wilson, too bad you failed to notice my screen name is just meant in fun. Using your own name may be a sign of your lack of a sense of humor.

In any case, consider the following:

      Q. Does Israel sometimes kill innocent civilians?
      A. Yes, but they do not target them. They target Hamas and other terrorists, and civilians are sometimes caught in the crossfire.

      Q. Does Hamas kill innocent civilians?
      A. Yes, all the time. They target them. Then they hide behind their own civilian population, and endanger them.

That is the big difference between Israel and the terrorists. If you don't see that, then there is something wrong with your thought processes.

American Idiot: A 'LEGITIMATE' government is one that it LEGITIMATELY elected or appointed in accordance with the laws of the country it governs. The fact that Hamas is indeed a LEGITIMATE Palestinian government (at least in Gaza) is supported by YOUR numbers telling us that Hamas got the LARGEST number of Palestinian voted. Still further, while Israel IS talking with the Fatah government of the West Bank these talks hardly can lead to any results as the Fatah government is UNABLE to comply with any promises it may possibly make.

Neither side has made real efforts to reach a 2 party solution. Israel won't stop settlement incursions and the Palestinians won't keep Hamas on a short leash.

You should try to get a glue of what you're talking about nent time. You will be amazed to discover that Israel offered the Palestinians peace and a sovereign independent state in 1948, 1967, 1978, 2000, 2001... If this is NOT "something forva two state solution" I don't know what is.

Just watch. I've said it before. Obama is going to get what so many tried to get: Peace in the Middle East. All his doing? As much as Reagan tore down this wall. And in my lifetime... Cool..

What do you mean by peace in the middle east? As in no wars? They have that now. As in no rocket fire ever? That will never happen. Israel will retaliate against ANY aggression shown.

Again the cowardly Hamas launches rockets then cries when retribution falls. The world needs to wakeup to the fact that any moslim following the Koran sees all other faiths infidels that must be killed. Civilization falls wherever the crescent is raised. Historically, Mohammed and his band of thugs have done nothing productive to the human race since his insane ravings were accepted as words from God, although the words in the Koran contradict everything taught by Christ. "Love your enemies" became "kill all that disagree", "Thou shalt not steal" became "It is right to take from infidels", and so it goes on and on. Any "religion" that is against a person's freedom to choose that the creator endowed us with is and kills and enslaves those not in agreement is not true religion. It is only a mask for the cowardly and childish to hide behind and deny personal responsibility for their actions.
