Overheard on CNN.com: How important is Planned Parenthood?

Comment of the day: "Ever seen a successful bar run by a preacher? Ain’t no way to be religious and a politician at the same time."–johnnyhouse

Reid, Boehner bicker over cause of budget standoff

As the federal government moves toward a shutdown, negotiations are apparently stalled over funding for Planned Parenthood. Thousands commented on this and other related stories. CNN.com readers argued over the role of Planned Parenthood in society and as a budget issue.

andiepie said, "The war on Planned Parenthood and other programs of that nature is pretty disgusting. I use Planned Parenthood for all my preventive care. I don't have insurance and can get a Pap smear and birth control for a reasonable price."

zeluha said, "When I had no insurance and all I needed was an OB annual, I was so scared to go to Planned Parenthood because of the protesters. People need to realize PP does a lot of good for the lower-income groups that can't afford to get insurance, see a normal OB/GYN, or afford contraceptives. Give it a break, Bible thumpers. Angry that you pay for these services? I'm angry that a very profitable theme park in Orlando is tax exempt because it's a Christian-themed park."

borismkv said it’s all about the economy: "Stupid social programs like Planned Parenthood should be the first to be cut loose from the government teat. The defense of Planned Parenthood is an attempt to make Republicans look heartless. They're not being heartless; they're being smart."

bbare89 replied, "Do you know how much Planned Parenthood costs the taxpayers? It isn't even material."

PatriciaJ316 was more concerned about abortions. "We all know that our money doesn't go to abortion but what it does do is free up donations and other money that Planned Parenthood receives to use it for abortion. That is why abortion is an issue right now even though tax money doesn't go directly to abortion."

Frenchlobste said, "Even Pres. Bush said, in declining to pull the plug on Planned Parenthood, that he is not going to buck what the majority of American people want him to do. The Tea Party is not in the majority; they only behave like they are."

YoYall said, "It's win-win for Republicans. We either take a shutdown or their social agenda items. They would take either because 'no more government' is their line."

Grandmother helping Chicago kids ‘off the block’

Diane Latiker, 54, and mother of 8, decided to confront the gang problem in her neighborhood by inviting members into her living room. They came to her house to be kids: to eat, get help with homework and talk about their hopes, dreams and fears. Her story inspired many CNN.com readers.

eviltwininoh said, "I think Ms. Latiker is wonderful. I am not so sure I would have the guts to do what she is doing. What a wonderful, wonderful person she seems to be."

boobush said, "I have the chills from reading this. I teach in a lower-income district, and my heart aches over all the tragic life stories my kids come into school with every day. For many it is their only safe haven, because their homes and neighborhoods are hell on Earth. This has inspired me that we need to do more to show these kids that they do matter, that there is a life out there waiting for them. Bravo, Mrs. Latiker; you are a hero."

MzEloquenze1 said, "This article brought me to tears. It's heartwarming to hear something good about the black community. This lady just lifted my spirits. I pray that as I get older and finish my degree, I will be able to have a positive impact on this upcoming generation as well. Thank you Diane! You have just fueled my fire even more!"

On a darker note, readers applauded her work but feared for her safety. jsmalberis said, "Good people die when doing good things. Hope these kids protect her." Vendetta22 said, "I'm not saying what she's doing isn't a good thing, but she's going to let in the wrong kid one day and it's going to end up badly. Certain areas of Chicago aren't exactly enclaves for saints and angels, if you catch my drift."

Recoleta replied, "She probably realizes that. Some people have this thing called pride and honor, not just in themselves but also in what they believe. If that were to happen, she'd be remembered as a person who gave it all for something she and many people find valuable. We can't live forever, but a legacy can."

Allen Iverson to police: 'Do you know who I am?'

Former NBA star Allen Iverson verbally attacked Atlanta police when he and a friend were pulled over in Iverson’s Lamborghini for changing lanes without signaling. Police found that the car’s tags had expired in 2009 and said the car would have to be towed. Iverson later returned to the police to apologize.

Danielcrew said, "OK, I totally agree that Iverson should not have shot off his mouth, should have paid his registration for the tags, and not pulled the celebrity card. But seriously?! He was pulled over for not turning on his signal while changing lanes? Come on Mr. Policeman, really?"

SayeeWhaat said, "Iverson is a bully on the court and a bully in society. At least he knows not to go too far with the police. Sad thing is though, if he makes so much money, why is he still trying to game the system for what is surely pocket change? Pay your damn bills, bro, and keep the tags current on all 10 of your trophy cars!"

argh427 said, "While I'm not defending his behavior afterwards, it does seem suspect that two black men in an expensive sports car were pulled over by police for such a minor violation."

jbinga said, "Anywhere else in GA and I'd buy your race argument. I drive the streets of Atlanta every day, and there are plenty of hoopties with paper tags flying down I-285. If it was only about race we'd have gridlock in Atlanta trying to pull all these cars over. The cop pulled him over because it was an expensive car with a paper tag. And before you say it was because a black man was driving, once again, anywhere but Atlanta and I would agree. Most of the expensive cars I see, Bentleys, Rolls, etc., are driven by black people."

acaraho said, "Well, I never heard of a white driver getting stopped for failing to signal while changing lanes."

timothyc said, "I'm a white male and the same thing happened to me. I always signal, but one time on the freeway I forgot to do so. An officer saw me and I got ticketed." ginn said, "I'm a white woman, and I was pulled over and ticketed for failing to come to a full stop."

Planned Parenthood is a criminal organization sanctioned and protected by law to kill the innocent that have no voice or choice. It should be defunded immediately.
Roe vs Wade must be over-turned because it is the foundation behind which baby killers rally.
President Obama said during his campaign that he would never 'punish' his daughter with a baby ... that is the mindset of the pro-choicers.

Have we had a decreasing crime rate, and if so, what are the stats?

@de...try to address any particular issues you have with my post and THEN change the subject. It's a rather crude formality people go through as they try and communicate nice like. There are those who attack the messenger as part of their distraction technique as if they were children. And they might be! Ya meet people of all sorts here. From a truck driving Bush lovin' mama to a brick-layer from Alabamy. They post from libraries in Chicago.(he he) They post from igloos on the North Slope. (wink) They have kids and drive an old pickup truck. They be firemen from Tejas. Wannabe fishermen from Washington. (lmao) But ya know? I have yet to meet anyone here on the N claiming to be like 14 yrs old. Have you all? How old are you de...gimme sumthin to go on. he he...and as far as me being an (R) cont.

It still goes stomping around, but people still look at the head and go 'huh? really'? The two have combined to make for one big fat retarded twelve year old carrying a shotgun. The kid is so delinquent, it took him 2 yrs to memorze the phrase 'corporate fascist' and another year or so before he likened it to the Military Industrial Complex." (and to be double-dog sure i ain't an (R)...google 'Margie Shoedinger. You need not include as keywords 'Bush', 'pre-groomed Bush' or 'Bush raypes young black girl and gets away with it'. Just Margie Shoedinger. It'll prove to you all the other. Now call me an (D), please. And if that don't work: I dare you to. 🙂

Really. If the gov shut down, tax refunds would stop coming. Really. And it's not just the "bible thumpers" (like Jesus) who are against abortions. There are people of all sorts who enjoy children and would never consider prematurely ending the life of a potential child, even if the mothers life was in danger. What loving mommy won't risk her own life to save the life of her progeny? When we hear of "mommy heroics" (like a tiny mommy gathering the strength to lift an automobile off of her trapped child) do we not stand-up and cheer? And i can see how people who think that this life is all there is might be less prone to risk their own life to save another. (unless you pay them for the service)
