New York, San Diego no longer have white majorities

New census data confirm that some major metropolitan areas flipped from majority white to majority populations of minorities during the past decade.

White people are now in the minority in 46 of the nation's 366 metro areas, including New York, Washington, San Diego, Las Vegas and Memphis, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution.

That number is up from 32 in 2000, 10 in 1990 and nine in 1980, Frey said.

The changes are a result of relatively slow growth among the white population, white people moving outside metropolitan areas, and huge increases in minority populations, especially Hispanic and Asian, he said.

Recent analysis also showed white children are in the minority in 10 states.

"[The 2010 Census figures] show we’re becoming a more diverse nation, especially in our metropolitan areas, and it's filtering out from there," Frey said.

The Census Bureau previously released the data for cities, counties and states, but data calculated for metropolitan areas and regions might give people a more accurate understanding of where they live, Frey said.

For example, while the population of the city of Atlanta grew by about 3,500, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta metro area, as the Census Bureau calls it, grew by more than 1 million. The Houston and Dallas areas also had growth of more than 1 million, while the Phoenix and Riverside, California, areas both added more than 900,000.

See the fastest-growing metro areas.

"As we become much more of a suburban nation, the kind of glue that puts the community together is the idea of the metropolitan community," he said.

Looking at metro areas also can offer a deeper view of how people live in different areas. Frey has used statistics about metropolitan areas to calculate the most segregated areas in the country. In terms of white and black, the most segregated areas were around Milwaukee, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland.

So when can I, a middle-aged white male, start getting affirmative action benefits?

First, explaining what "white" means is difficult because there is no pure white, black, hispanic, etc. race in the world. If you don't believe, that is if you aren't afraid of the truth, check your DNA.

Pretty soon if not already whites will make up 60% of the nation. Name someone who would want 40% of there gene pool to be non-white.

    anti-racism is a code word for anti-white!

Who is white? I know many Latinos/Hispanics that are whiter than the average KKK member. Our national dialogue on so called race is built on a scientifically inaccurate categorization of phenotypes and ancestry.

I are things better when the white people leave? From the complaints about "white flight" I don;t think so. I'm looking for the next land of opportunity. This one is racist and washed out.

In every country I have lived in or visited, there was a majority population that oppressed a minority one. Whether it was the Hather oppressing the Bedoons in Kuwait, the hatred of the Garifuna in Honduras an Guatema or the slaughter of the Hazara in Afghanistan, someone is always wiiping out someone else. Good luck in your search.

Please don't lump us in with other minorities that don't work. I know there's a big push to say "the blacks and browns", but that's pushed by the blacks that want to attach themselves to our work ethic, sense of family, pride in America and culture.

Yes. Even very poor Hispanics will work two or three jobs to support their families and still send money back to the old country.

the bottom line is there will be more and more "white only" groups coming into the mainstream. White groups that are not against "non whites" but are simply interested in the advancement of white people.

Fortunately for browns and blacks, these mainstream groups will not be led by the idiot "white power" folks who are motivated by hatred (or the fact that they are white losers unable to make it in the world)...no, these "white only" groups will become mainstream because whites will have a casual association with them. It won't define us. But if we need to come together to protect one another, we will have that in place.

Whites should high-tail it out of those cities immediately, staying only will make them surfs of the State. Whites already pay the most taxes, the only way those cities can survive is if they tax the producers more to make up for an ever-expanding welfare class.

They should all go to Malibu or Waikiki, where they can be surfs in earnest.
