Croatian generals convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity

The International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia announced Friday that it had convicted two Croatian generals of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Ante Gotovina, who commanded Croatia's Split military district during the mid-1990s war that led to the disintegration of Yugoslavia, was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Mladen Markac, who headed the Interior Ministry's Special Police, received an 18-year prison term.

A third general, Ivan Cermak, was acquitted of all charges and ordered released as soon as possible.

Gotovina and Markac participated in an ethnic cleansing operation in Croatia's Krajina region between July and September 1995, the court found. Under the leadership of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, the generals and others attempted to clear the Krajina of ethnic Serbs and repopulate it with Croats, the court said.

Tudjman, who died in 1999, never was officially charged with any crime.

The trial in The Hague, Netherlands, started in March 2008 and involved 145 witnesses and 4,819 evidence exhibits, the court said.

The verdict was greeted by boos and hisses from crowds gathered in the central square of Croatia's capital, Zagreb, the BBC reported. The generals are regarded by some as national heroes.

did you , michael, know where the idea of creating a court for war crimes came from? who started it, let0s say' we did, the croats. and why? so that when the serbs were killing and raping and evicting us from our homes the world stood and watched. we wantedd to let the world know what had happened and who was responsible. And why' so that the same court can convict our general for ethnic cleansing? for killij gthem when they are the ones who attacked? you don't know what aou're taliking about. you say you lived here at the time, but so did the serbs and look at their side of the story. OK, but i see who I'm dealing with here, talking about killing for profit? goodbye and goodluck. SAPIENTI SAT. Google that too.

Because of Serbians like Michael, there will never be peace between Serbians and Croatians. The antagonizing is only increasing hatred amongst the two groups. The more Michael posts the more hate will be spread between the two groups.

I can see why Croatians were filled with hatred for the Serbians. Michael you may be a civilian, but I would not like you living in my house with your remarks and antagonizing. If your goal is to create problems between the two groups even more, you've succeeded.

If you want to know when genocid on Serbs started in Croatia read following:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasenovac_concentration_camp. It explains official Croatian politics: “A third must become Catholic, a third must leave the country, and a third must die!", which has been carried out in last 70 years.
At the end when Serbs have been completely terminated in Croatia somebody admitted the truth.

oh, i just saw your comment about us commitin genocide? did you not read what i wrote to you a couple of posts earlier? it wasn"t a genocide, and I'm tired of saying this, and know what else? you helped us! without your clinton and his full support we wouldn't be able to free ourselves from the agressor and declare independence. Now, what is it according to you? a genocide or an action with a higher purpose, i.e. profit, for your americans?
I'm done talking to uneducated americnas about things they have no capacity of understanding

      Serbian Michael,

Could you live in this house? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4_7o6Vf9CNU#at=82

Is this something you want? Serbians aggressors created destruction on Croatian soil. Croatians were not given the liberty to escape or "leave". If this event did not take place, Croatians and Serbians may have been friends.

      Thanks for your post!

Were there any Croatians living in Serbia?

It would be interesting to know the ratio of Croatians in Serbia. Were Croatians even allowed to live in that country?
