Arizona governor vetoes presidential 'birther bill'

Arizona's governor has vetoed a bill that would require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names could be placed on Arizona's ballots.

Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, said she could not "support designating one person as gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate."

Under the measure, if there were any dispute about whether a candidate had proved he or she had been born in the United States, Arizona's secretary of state would have the final say.

The Arizona "birther bill" got final approval by a vote of 40-16 last week in the state House. It now will not become law unless legislators vote to override Brewer's veto.

Economy must be booming in Arizona, the law makers are not worried about creating jobs, instead they want to check birth certificates of presidential candidates, want proof of citizenship from brown people. Next time they will make a law that will require native indians (the real AMERICAN) to show proof of birth. That is one messed up State.

She got over 3 million to prop her bank up. All these Tea Baggers (another name for NAZI?) have banks?Or connections to Banks? Wow. Lets see if I can borrow.......................I can't borrow enough to get blankets for homeless Vets. See you all at the Veterans hospital..............

we should be looking into how many bankruptcies Donald "I'm a birther" Trump has had. How many investors did he bilk out of millions and millions and get off free? And he did this several times. Trump has NO room to point fingers at anyone. Why he isn't in jail is amazing.

This is a shock, especially from a governor who has so far been on the side of the far right, ultra conservative, "tea bag" crowd.

We a person who backs a "show your papers" law thinks this legislation is a bad enough idea to veto it, then you know it stinks more than road kill that's been sitting in the Arizona summer sun.

paul: "We a person who backs a "show your papers" law thinks this legislation"

The fact that you're surprised shows you're either hyperpartisan or so shallow minded that you can't see any merit in your opponent's positions.

That said, the law she signed was not a "show your papers" law, it purportedly follows Federal legislation and, crucially, requires police to have "probable cause" in order to ask for identification. Probable cause is a sliding scale and in most every situation a cop will be confronted with, there will be absolutely no probable cause to think a person is in the country illegally.

      Driving? Nope.

I wonder if AZ would have passed this law if McCain were elected president, he was in fact not born in the US. What is amusing to me is that the teabaggers that push this lie were behind McCain when he was running and said nothing about his elligibility to be president.

RobD, McCain did show his birth certificate when asked for it. It wasn't a big deal because McCain didn't make a big deal of it, he simply showed the requested docs and ended the discussion. I'm not saying that Obama is an illegal president, I believe someone would have exposed that. But I think he's made himself look like an obstructionist jerk by not simply showing it and ending the story. He's cutting off his nose to spite his face, which isn't becoming of a sitting US president.

McCain's parents were American, that is good enough for him to be considered natural born US citizen. That said, I didn't vote for him and would never vote for him.

rob: "he was in fact not born in the US"

He was born on a military base, which is considered U.S. soil. Much less, his parents were American citizens, and under Federal law you're an American citizen when your mother is, no matter where you're born.

      Nice try.

Everyone is not born in aristocratic & educated families. Children who are born to parents in rags & rugged conditions are under different conditions, become victoms of social & critical analysis due to inherent weaknesses which cannot be concealed.

Actually, as comparable of a situation as this seems, it isn't. McCain was born on a military base in Panama and, technically, military bases count as 'US soil'. So, yes, he was born 'in the USA'. And, of course, the birth location is irrelevant because at least 1 of his parents was a citizen.

Tim, you are a shameless liar. Obama did show his birth certificate. The state of Hawaii even allowed fact checking websites to photograph the original with the certificate number, the governor's signature and the official Hawaii seal that was a raised seal. If someone invented a time machine and brought you to the instance os Obama's birth in Hawaii, you still would be throwing up lies.

He showed it, it was done, then some of the crazies that started up all of the stories started up one that he wasn't really born in Hawaii (do you know how many people STILL think he's a Muslim?). The point people are trying to make about McCain is that he doesn't hold up to the (false) test they are throwing out there about needing to be born on US soil, so it wouldn't matter anyway – if born to a citizen, you are a citizen and could be president. But this itself is not some fallback position on our sitting president, just another chink in the armor of the specious birther claims that this is some weird coup from a Kenyan. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, and he proved it to everybody he needed to prove it to.

Obama says he's a Christian. Your opinion, or anyone else's for that matter, doesn't matter. And even if he were a Muslim...who gives a crap about that? His religious affiliation has no bearing on his right to rule as our President.

Ummm.... He has shown his Birth Certificate, several times, and it's posted online...Now I know what you're going to say, anyone can post a birth certificate online, doesn't mean it's genuine.....How about the fact that every agency that has investigated this issue has concluded that he was a natural born citizen of the United States? Stop watching Faux News, Glenn Beck is bad for your brain, read a few newspapers, a couple of books, maybe look into some history books not written by conservative Christians. Hussein is a name, and if you automatically associate it with Saddam and Muslims you seriously have a problem. Christians have killed their fair share of innocents. The United States is not infallible.
