Arizona governor vetoes presidential 'birther bill'

Arizona's governor has vetoed a bill that would require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names could be placed on Arizona's ballots.

Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, said she could not "support designating one person as gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate."

Under the measure, if there were any dispute about whether a candidate had proved he or she had been born in the United States, Arizona's secretary of state would have the final say.

The Arizona "birther bill" got final approval by a vote of 40-16 last week in the state House. It now will not become law unless legislators vote to override Brewer's veto.

What this is really is a way to try to block presidential nominees. Obama has provided all necessary paperwork about this idiotic issue but people on the right will throw any BS in protest of a president who is not their color. That is what this bill is about. If there is a someone not in the repub party, they can use this to subjectively make sure their name is not on the ballot. That is their way. The most important thing is to get elected, even if it means using a subjective technicality to deny voters a choice. This is the kind of thing that goes on in Cuba and countries like that. I guess that is the new governing model were are looking at.

He's a citizen if he agrees to accept that the top 2% that owns 50% of the USA's wealth and owns the Tea Party, are the only legitimate American government.

Koch Bros MOney buys the Tea Party and Glenn Beck is the mouth piece to help turn Jefferson and founding fathers words to suit their agenda. Where will Glenn turn up next? In one of the Tea Partys' rich pockets, the highest bidder. Tea Party wake up they are taking the middle and ripping it up. They talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Middle class needs a hero and not a bunch of 0000000000000000's.

You "birthers" are some of the biggest morons I've ever come across on the internet. I could understand if you were mostly 15 year olds who let there desire to believe something exciting overpower their common sense but most of you seem to be adults who are too stupid to think rationally.
It's all just a moronic campaign by the GOP tarnish the opposition. The reality is they sat around in some dark room somewhere thinking up a way to give racists something they can grab on to without actually having to admit they're racist.
Do you honestly think the Republicans would just sit there throwing accusations if they actually thought for a second that Obama was not an American? How stupid are you? You can ALREADY see politicians starting to back off the accusations because they've served their purpose and now they run the risk of looking foolish for believing it.
In the end they will completely abandoned the theory leaving all you "believers" to rot.

This isn't a show of brains on Brewer's part, except for her listening to the pleading of party central to stop beating the crazy drum because it's going to get them killed in 2012. Rest assured that this woman's shriveled little partisan heart has not grown three sizes today or any day leading up to today. It's still a shriveled little partisan husk. Just like her shriveled little partisan brain.

Donald Trump is using the birther idiocracy to fuel his ratings, much like Sarah Palin's negative yapping on anything President Obama says or does. Both are so full of shet that indeed their eyes are brown and neither intend or have a rat's chance in hell of getting elected, yet alone winning a GOP nomination and they know it. Its all about the money.

Birthers make up a portion of this tea bagger/party movement....part that contains some of the most uneducated crackpots in the US....why are we giving them more press? Obama has already proven he's an American citizen, born in Hawaii...I really hope this comes up in the election...would add to the odds stacked against a Republican candidate winning...

All of you dumping on "birthers' are missing the point. Hawaiii will issue birth certificates to foreigners and has in the past (see Sun Yat Sen). The birth certificate signed by the doctor should be produced to stop all of the disputes. Why isn't the birth certificate produced? Millions of dollars spent by the administration on legal fees; all of which could be avoided by producing the birth certificate signed by the doctor. This issue is distracting citizens from the real issues of this economy: jobs, jobs, jobs!

PS. I have a post graduate degree; I did some research on this issue. Do your own research and you will see why the doctor signed birth certificate should be produced immediately.

I completely agree with the comments saying the Republicans are just using tactics for their own gain. I know. Because it's exactly what the Democrats did when there was a Republican President!

PS Who cares who the president is. It's Congress and the Senate who write the bills. And last I checked, both the Dems and Repubs have each had recent majorities in each House. So if there's some pet project that your chosen party didn't work out for you, yet both have had majorities in the last 4 years, well, then whose really to blame?

      – recent immigrant to the US who actually had to learn about the political system as an interested adult, instead of a whining, sniveling adult who was asleep in middle school.

As a Canadian, I just love following these issues in American politics. It is so cute how you think these things are important. You're doing a great job keeping the rest of the world entertained. It is however, getting more and more difficult to take you seriously. We're all ROFL up here. Just love that Fox network, but I just about pass out laughing everytime I watch it. How they keep a straight face when they're talking.

I know that there are a lot of intelligent people in the U.S. I have met many. Just doesn't appear they run for office or get hired by the media in your country, but what fun would that be if they did.

@Francesford. Since you claim to have done 'research', could you kindly enlighten us to the claim that Obama has spent milliions on legal fees to vis-a-vis his birth certicate? I can find no evidence whatsoever. Also, as you should know after your research, Hawaii can not release the long-form birth certificate unless the State changes their current law.

Did you ever think that perhaps he won't answer to the birthers because it's extremely offensive that the first black man to become PRESIDENT OF YOUR F'ING COUNTRY AFTER YEARS OF POLITICAL SERVICE has to answer to a bunch of racists hillbillies and try to assure them that he's an American?
It's like Sarah Palin being asked by a journalist what news publications she reads every day. it's insulting! The difference is that Obama is smart enough not to play their game, unlike Palin who made an ass of herself on national television and didn't think to take offense until days later.
Or it could also be that he doesn't want to confront the birthers until the next election because it's probably more beneficial to his compaign then harmful. You guys make your entire party look retarded and nobody wants to be a part of any group dumb enough to believe the president is a Kenyan Manchurian candidate brought to the U.S. as part of a democratic conspiracy to destroy the country.
Do you honestly believe people that powerful would not just run off a valid government birth certificate before he even took office you sad morons?

Birthers are funny. Look how upset they get when you point out how their viewpoint is utterly impossible in this realm of consciousness. Some of these clowns honestly believe there is foul play afoot and that the true will of the people is being ignored. There is absolutely no way any government, no matter how powerful, could pull off a fraud even remotely comparable to what they are alleging regarding Obama given the amount of scrutiny that is capable of being applied in the information age. These people are the equivalent of poop-chucking apes. They can't even speak in rational sentences. I laugh because they get so outraged when you tell them that Hawaii already released Obama's certificate of live birth and the health department there already certified it. It's like the same kind of frustration you see on a toddler's face when they know exactly what they are trying to tell you, but all you hear coming out of their mouth is total incoherent nonsense. The majority of birthers are the same people who quit high school because it was too difficult and turned to the Bible...and guns... Wow, Obama was right about them!

After the Supreme Court decided to stop the recount ... Dems continued to be disgruntled BUT as loyal citizens we accepted the decision. There were no massive protests, we didn't create a movement/websites to continually defame Bush on that issue nor introduce frivolous bills in legislatures to deal with recounts. Not a legitimate comparison. 2 1/2 years after the election – Trump and the others are still at in the media .... Name one Dem politician who kept the issue about the recount alive 2 1/2 yrs after the Supreme Court decision. Go back and listen to Gore's eloquent and patriotic concession speech after the Supreme Court vote. In contrast, the 2008 GOP VP candidate supported Trump in his crazy quest. Sems to me, Dems have demonstrated more maturity and respect for our govt.

He is THE face of the USA when he travels abroad, etc. Only someone who cared deeply about this country would do that day after day after day. BTW, how do you feel about McCain being born in Panama Canal Zone? Or that Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico ... and he sought to be the GOP presidential candidate in the 60's/70's. No one said they were disqualified.

You just proved that birthers are racist by calling Obama " THE AFRICAN". You are just a redneck white hillbilly who doesnt like the fact that a black man is president. Well I hate to break it to ya, but he is president, get over it. Would you have put up the same argument about McCain, who was born in Panama (albeit on US owned parts, but still not born in the US as you morons like to point out)? You sir are just a racist, plain and simple.

The funny part of all of this, well...other than it's happening in Arizona, is something I dug out a couple days ago. In order to receive a passport, I had to provide my "birth certificate" from the State of Oregon. Paid $10 and got it, and sent it in. Got my passport, which confirms, amongst other things, that I'm a US citizen.

When asked back during the campaign, Obama provided a "Certificate of Live Birth" from the State of Hawaii. I looked at mine the other day. It is a "Certificate of Live Birth" too. So, if that's good enough to receive a passport, I think it ought to be good enough for other things too. BTW, I actually have the original "hospital certificate" and it says two interesting things. The first is that it specifically says it's "not a birth certificate." Also, other than my footprint, the only other proof on it is a signature from a nurse. It's not notarized or even signed by a doctor or hospital official other than that nurse. Had I sent it in for the passport, it wouldn't have been considered valid. Go figure.
