Easter reminder: Kinder Eggs banned in the United States

Not all eggs are created equal in the eyes of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Kinder Eggs, a popular European chocolate egg that contains a toy inside, is banned from importation into the United States because it contains a "non-nutritive object embedded in it."

With the Easter holiday around the corner, the agency issued the reminder this week, warning that the candy is considered unsafe for children under 3. Last year, Customs and Border Protection seized 25,000 of them in 1,700 incidents.

The hollow egg, which is sold by the Italian confectioner Ferrero, is available in Europe, Canada, Australia and parts of Latin America under various names including Kinder Surprise and Kinder Sorpresa. It has taken on a cult status among adults who collect the toys, which vary from rings to animals and cartoon characters.

Kinder Eggs' scarcity in the United States has made them an object of desire: Various websites and online forums are dedicated to acquiring them.

Some are apparently hiding in plain sight. Earlier this week, DNAinfo.com, a New York City neighborhood guide, posted a story and slideshow showing stores where the coveted treats can be found.

"While there are some commercial-sized seizures that occur, most Kinder Eggs are seized in personal baggage or at mail and express consignment facilities," Customs and Border Protection said.

A Canadian woman reportedly learned her lesson the hard way.

The woman was selected for a random search at a border checkpoint in Minnesota when officials discovered she was carrying a Kinder Egg and took it from her, The Toronto Star reported.

A few weeks later, she received a 7-page letter asking if she wanted the egg back or if she was going to abandon rights to it, the Star reported.

"I was in disbelief," she told the newspaper. "It's a $2 egg."

Really why worry if the fat Americans choke on the toy, it might help thin out the herds.

The law banning products like Kinder Eggs has been on the books since 1938 and the recall of them was in 1997. Stupid yes, but not as stupid as trying to blame the ban on the President because you don't like him. You idiots seem to think the president does WAY more than he actually can. If you took a second to READ instead of having a knee-jerk reaction about IMPORTED CANDY you'd know that. Sorry to burst your big fat conservative bubble.

"The law banning products like Kinder Eggs has been on the books since 1938..." Genius, the laws of 1938 were not created to ban candy from importation, they were created to protect people from snake oil salesman. Do a little research on something besides wiki and then get back to us when you have something useful to say.

Ok Kasey, how about this then direct from the CBP.gov website.....
'The chocolate eggs also violate the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938 which prohibits embedding non-food items completely inside food items'
Well hey, what do you know, the 1938 law. Got anything else to say 'genius'?

      Hey Joe!

Ignorants like you that have never traveled (bet you don't even have a passport) are what the Faux/Limbaugh?Beck?Palin team are depending on.

Keep up the good work Joe!

Now go home and fantasize about Bachman.

Actually the product has never been sold in the US and was turned down to be sold in 1993. Maybe you should do some research on the situation and how legislative branch and the Federal bureaucracy work before ignorantly putting the blame on Obama.

@Shampoohorns: So what? It's still completely mindless and a waste of taxpayer money looking for and confiscating Kinder Eggs! We're really losing all of our freedoms...

Let freedom ring, Did I here you guys right you thought we lived in a free country? More things have been band in our life time the anyone can count. We are not free and some of us are lucky enough to be old enough to know what I mean. We all need to fight to let our children and grand children know what it was like to live in a free country. Stop letting the government fix every thing, its not a fix. All they do is take away our freedoms 1 toy candy egg at a time.

Seriously? I mean this law is stupid but it's not like it JUST happened. The law banning products like Kinder Eggs has been on the books since 1938 and the recall of them was in 1997. Why aren't you whining that we should be buying AMERICAN chocolate eggs? And granted, you have to me stupid if you're an adult who eats the toy, but these things are TINY. A small child could choke. A small, REPUBLICAN child.

Shampoohorn is correct. It would HAVE to be a Republican child because all of the Demoncrat children are on welfare and wouldn't be able to use food stamps to buy Kinder Eggs. Maybe they will come up with a Kinder Cheese that they could purchase with their stamps.

@Shampoohorns: Again, so what? Freedom101 is absolutely right. If you can't see it that's ghastly and a darned shame. The city of Boston just announced that their buildings will no longer have vending machines in them that dispense soda because "it's an unhealthy beverage". So, now the city is making decisions for its citizens about what they can drink to get refreshment. And in trying to justify the new procedures some smug dude standing next to the mayor was saying "Well, people that drink soda will be paying for it later on in life". 1984 here we come.

I grew up with those eggs in Germany. My family sends them to us; my kids have learned to love them and look forward to the packages from their grandmother/omi. We would get them for Easter and as Advent calendars. It has become a family tradition to put the little toys together that are inside. I guess this has come to an end.

It would be awesome if someone from the government can come over and explain to my 10 year old why her grandma can no longer send them.

Although I'd sure like to be there for it, it would never happen. You cannot explain the unexplainable. There is no logic that could ever justify this ban.

Stupid yes, but not as stupid as trying to blame the ban on the President because you don't like him. Sorry to burst your big fat conservative bubble. This is a foreign candy that is banned from being imported. 1. Why aren't you all upset that we aren't buying MADE IN USA candy. 2. They are not really very good. The toy is cool. Had one in Germany. Big whooptidoo. But this has absolutely NOTHING to do with Obama. Really, people.

Guilty as charged. I've smuggled Kinder Eggs across an international border. Perhaps now on "interior checkpoints" they can get "chocolate dogs" to harass U.S. citizens traveling on roads that never even cross the border, seeing as how drug dogs aren't sufficient to catch illegal immigrants, guns, and drugs at the border. God knows what would happen if too many chocolate eggs came across the border! Shhhh .... don't let Jan Brewer get a hold of this news.

same here flew in from Germany last week with 2 trays of eggs in my luggage. The kids love them, I've been doing it for years and guess what, no one has choked on them, Am I lucky or is it that I'm smart enough to know that you don't give small objects to a baby??

Homeland Security running amok because Kinder Eggs have a "non-nutritive object embedded in it." Thats' what they're famous for, you Einsteins!!! It's a candy... a chocolate egg with a toy inside!!! What TH is wrong with this country?!?!?

WOW!! Are you kidding me !! I did nothing but collect them for 6 years when I lived in Germany.. Gave the candy to the kids and kept the toys inside my neighbors and I all had kinder egg collections
No wonder were in Debt were to busy worrying about stupid irrelevant things. Its common sense not give these toys to small children as they can be a choking hazard.

What kind of article is this?
"non-nutritive object embedded in it." – What about those cereals that had toys in them??
"considered unsafe for children under 3" – Lego is considered unsafe for children under 3.
Why can't we do the same for drugs? It's just an egg!!!
