Gotta Watch: Donald Trump

As MSNBC has said, Donald Trump is to politics what Charlie Sheen is to entertainment. You want to watch him just to see what he says next. He keeps questioning President Obama's birthplace, but he gets annoyed when anyone presses him on his "birther" theory. Trump has been a media magnet for years, and now he's dangling the prospect of a potential presidential run. In today's Gotta Watch, we take a look at some of Trump's greatest hits.

'Birther' controversy - Trump says his strengths as a potential candidate like in his stance on "jobs, the economy, and protecting our nation from OPEC, China and all these other countries that are ripping us off." And yet, he complains that, every time he's on TV, he's asked about the theory that President Obama wasn't born in the U.S. Check out this feisty exchange between Trump and CNN's Ali Velshi and Kyran Chetry.

[cnn-video url="http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2011/04/21/am.trump.birther.cnn"%5D

What's in a Trump name? - From "stupid" to "blatherside," so many in the media have their own way to describe Donald Trump. CNN's Jeanne Moos takes a look.

[cnn-video url="http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/offbeat/2011/04/20/moos.trumpathon.cnn"%5D

Donald Trump said what?? - Sometimes it seems as though Trump says anything that comes to his mind. And it's not always nice. As he eyes a possible presidential run, CNN.com dug up some of the more zany things the mogul has said over the years.

Drop the birther issue and Trump could be a decent president. It's too late to do anything, even if Obama wasn't born here (I think he was and even John McCain was born in Panama)...
Thank you Princess! But Mario is in another castle!

Decent president? Hahaha. Trump counts on brainless morons like yourself to bolster his half wit image, and to ensure his scams and radical points of view are left unquestioned. This whole country is g oing to h-e-l-l in a hand basket.

@toad, I personally think he would be a decent president even if he doesn't drop the birther issue. Not to mention, I agree with him when every liberal (CNN) news station brings up the birther issue, not him. From the moment they exchange hello's one of the first questions is always about the birther issue. Whether they agree with him or not, the news media can CHOOSE to skip that topic and ask him about OPEC, China, jobs, economy, etc. etc. The guy on the clip didn't want to drop it no matter what. Instead he wanted Trump to admit to something he didn't believe. What kind of childish crap is that. Don't agree him, fine. Move on. But you need to be able to read between the lines. That's the media's way of trying to shoot down his credibility. Why else would THEY not drop it.

@23, Now you're the one being irrational. Considering the amount of personal success the man has had, whether you like him or not, whether you agree with him or not, the last thing he is, is a brainless moron. I don't personally know you or Trump for that matter, but unless your own acheivements overshadow Trump's, which I can bet don't, the only half-wit here is you.

@ Hondulnoa. It DOES matter whether you agree with his business practices! It's much easier to be successful if you are willing to break the rules, cheat people (by his own admission), stiff creditors etc. If you listen to some of his answers to questions, he doesn't come across very intelligent. Do you admire Bernie Madoff's "intelligence"? He became a billionaire by robbing people's retirement funds in a complex ponzi scheme. Boy that took brains didn't it?

I don't know about a decent president but I will give him credit for being the only person brave enough and outspoken enough to call things the way they are rather than tip-toeing around them. It's refreshing.

This interview clearly shows the bias of CNN. Trump has an opinion that differs from your “reporters” opinion on a subject that you believe is settled. You(CNN) show your colors as “liberal commentators” not “reporters”. If You want him to talk about something other than the birther issue then ask him about something else. You (CNN) are the one bringing it up… The truth is that is where you believe he is the weakest… so you(CNN) as a liberal outlet attack him on that issue. Yes I believe Obama stinks as a president…but not because of where he was born. imo

@ Sam & ana, As I mentioned in a previous post, whether you like Trump or not, whether you actually hate or even despise the guy or not, you cannot RATIONALLY argue about his intellect. To have acheived everything this man has accomplished takes brains. And it doesn't matter if you even agree with his business practices, he has accomplished more than some people could in 3 lifetimes. Bottom line, you have to be smart. Second, I don't know Lisa and cannot vouch for her intelligence, but what I do know is that she feels betrayed. If someone you knew pulled the wool over your eyes, wouldn't you be angry too? So why can't people be angry with the president as well? That to me, doesn't make her stupid, of low intelligence and doesn't promote hatred either.

@mmmmm: Trump is in real estate and he benefits when EVERYONE has money to spend, unlike those who are trying to siphon every dollar from American workers. I like his ideas on how to deal with the global economy and nobody in the political arena has taken a firm approach to those who are shortchanging America. I agree though. Drop the birther issue, but he's running as a republican and therefore needs to gain support from the tea party crowd. Obama played to the far left during his campaign and has not kept all his promises to the left. Unfortunately politicians need to play to the mindless partisan voters in order to win primaries. If we had a 3rd party primary then you'd see less catering to the extreme elements within a party.

Donald Trump doesn't want to make the birther his focus, apparently CNN does... He' s investigating which is what the media is supposed to do when they are not in Obama's pocket. One way, or another let the truth be told! Obama has spent millions trying to hide his information, or stop it from being released. One has to ask why...? But you're right, America has bigger, more important issues to address.

    • TheBalrog

@Diane You may be right about the capital gains tax, but if you bother to actually listen to what he's been telling every interviewer he's spoken to, his goal is NOT to raise taxes. Rather, he wants to put an end to sending Billions of dollars in foreign aid and stop countries like China, and groups like OPEC from robbing us blind. He has stated that he believes that we could avoid new taxes completely if we just stopped bleeding those hundreds of Billions of dollars to foreign countries, when we can't afford to build schools, take care of our veterans or the sick, or the infirm and aged, or fix roads here at home.

@Frances – Trump brought the birther subject up. It is so radical to the media that they DO focus on it, but he is responsible for the reaction. If he seriously interested in the White House he should be hammering about some of the other issues that have more traction like trade deficits etc. He has said some good things about that but the first thing he did was give the press a bat to beat him over the head with. This leads me to believe that he is doing this as a publicity stunt.

IIgnorant fool. Wasn't it the Bush's grandpappy who made his fortune being a rum runner? What does that or Obama's divorced father have anything to do with hating America, foreign born or all of the ignorant (no, racist) things being spouted about Obama. I too am getting real tired of the single wide trailer trash that pretends to know what's going on in the world or even in America. Those folks never even bothered to graduate from high school and, I bet, wouldn't even know to point on a globe for Kenya or Indonesia or the Hawaiian Islands. And these folks' opinions matter, why? Please, if that's elitist then so be it – it's about time someone valued education and intelligence over guns and the size of a trucks' V8 engine.

@Duh IF he were president and placed a 25% tariff (tax) on all Chinese imports, the long term effect would be one of two things: China would capitulate, and stop manipulating their currency to keep it's value artificially low against the Dollar, which would help our economy... or... they would refuse to stop what they are doing, and the price of their goods would once again be cost-beneficial to make here in the U.S., creating more job opportunities for Americans, which is good for our economy.

China may hold the largest portion of our debt (in the form of U.S. Treasury Bonds), but their ability to hold us hostage with those Bonds is significantly lessened if they lose the ability to manipulate the value of their currency against the U.S. Dollar. That becomes doubly true if our economy heats back up as a result.
