Violence in Syria and Libya - The Syrian army launched a military operation Monday cracking down on anti-government protesters in the southern city of Daraa, and Syrian authorities have closed the border with Jordan.
Witnesses early Monday reported bodies lying on the streets of Daraa. Ambulances were unable to help the injured because snipers and army officers were deployed across the city, a witness said. "They shoot on anything that moves," the witness said. Another witness spoke to CNN by phone, estimating about 3,000 soldiers are in Daraa. "They are breaking into people's houses, firing randomly at houses," said the resident as the sound of gunfire and people screaming could be heard in the background. "We were sleeping and not protesting."
Meanwhile in Libya, the casualty toll continued to mount Monday in Misrata despite reports that Moammar Gadhafi's forces have withdrawn from the besieged city. Misrata has been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting as rebels try to oust Gadhafi. NATO jets bombed targets in the capital of Tripoli early Monday as state-run TV reported airstrikes flattened a building at Gadhafi's compound. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said NATO should start bombing Gadhafi's inner circle to remove him from power.
Taliban break out of prison - More than 400 prisoners escaped early Monday from a jail in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, officials said. The Taliban, which claimed responsibility for facilitating the escape, said 541 prisoners fled. NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the number was closer to 470. It was the second prison break at the facility. In June 2008, up to 1,000 prisoners - almost half of them Taliban members - escaped the prison after a raid by militants.
The Kandahar governor's office said police have launched a wide operation for Monday's escapees and had recaptured eight. A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahed, said its members spent five months digging a 320-meter (1,049-foot) tunnel to the prison.
Meanwhile, WikiLeaks has released a trove of documents about the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison, shedding light on how the detainees there behaved and how officials assessed their danger to the United States.
Texas wildfire - Scattered thunderstorms brought some relief to beleaguered Texas firefighters Sunday, but the first part of this week is shaping up to be the kind of scorcher that has state officials worried. Critical fire weather is expected Monday and Tuesday as a low-pressure system propels the dry line eastward across the state, according to the Texas Forest Service. Temperatures will be in the 90s, while relative humidity will be 10% or less in some areas, and winds will gust up to 45 mph. Forecasters said atmospheric instability can cause existing fires to become larger. The forest service responded to 17 new fires over the weekend.
Royal wedding - It will be a fixture of "On the Radar" all week. Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot Friday. So sit back and enjoy all the glitz and pomp. For full royal wedding coverage, including a wedding guest list, CNN.com's "Unveiled" blog has it all.
If we are going to involve ourselves in Lybia then our mission should be to get Gadhafi immediately. If that is not our goal then we should stay out of this fray. He did kill 193 Americans on flight 103 and that makes him an enemy and a criminal of the U.S.. That alone is all the reason we need to take him out. Get it done and come home. The rest of the fray can be handled by Great Britian and France.
Spies have infiltrated the ranks of Gadhafi reporting his whereabouts to Predator Drones. He cannot stay in one place for more than five minutes. Without any rest Gadhafi will soon surrender in return for a nights sleep.
Another right-wing nutjob here. No wonder they call ours a sick society with people like this jerk above!
