On the Radar: Syria, Missouri flood threat, 'birther' probe, Arkansas storms

U.N. panel may look into Syria allegations - The U.N. Security Council could take up the issue of alleged human rights abuses in Syria on Tuesday, a day after witnesses said thousands of troops invaded the heart of the country's recent protests and carried out a bloody crackdown.

A U.N. diplomat said a draft Security Council statement sponsored by France, Portugal and the United Kingdom condemned the violence and called for restraint. It also supported U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call for an independent investigation on the matter.

A final statement could be agreed upon by Tuesday, the diplomat said.

Levee breaked feared in Missouri - Police in southeastern Missouri were going house to house Tuesday ordering people to evacuate ahead of an imminent "catastrophic failure" as the Black River threatened to break through a compromised levee.

"A lot of people are getting very worried that they're going to see higher levels than they've ever seen before," said Aaron Luke of Nashville, who visited family in the Poplar Bluff area over the weekend.

Born in the USA - A new CNN investigation reveals what most analysts have been saying since the "birther" controversy erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign: President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. Period.

While the president has made light of the controversy, the question remains political red meat for some of his critics. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll showed that nearly 75% of Americans believe Obama was definitely or probably born in the United States. More than four in 10 Republicans, however, believe he probably or definitely was not born in the U.S.

The U.S. Constitution says only "natural born" citizens can become president - a vague clause that some members of the birther movement contend disqualifies Obama because, they insist, he was born outside the United States.

Thousands without power in Arkansas - Almost 67,000 customers were without power in Arkansas on Tuesday morning after a rash of severe weather tore through the state a day earlier, killing at least seven people and destroying more than a dozen homes.

The weather also spawned a tornado that struck Little Rock Air Force Base, military officials said, and prompted Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe to declare a state of emergency.
