Gotta Watch: Born in the USA

After years of speculation and several major media outlets debunking claims, President Obama moved to put rumors about his birth certificate to bed by releasing the long-form document. While this may quiet some of the noise from some so-called "birther" conspiracy theorists, it may not be enough for others. In today's gotta watch we take a look at some of the most vocal "birthers" and their years-long quest to see Obama's birth certificate. And if you're still not sure what all the stink is all about, we've got a cheat sheet here.

The born conspiracy? – "Birther" movement leader Orly Taitz has been very vocal about her doubts concerning the president's birth place. She even took the issue to a California court. She said her goal was to find out if Obama was U.S. citizen and to hold a special presidential election if he wasn't.

"Birther" solider refuses deployment – One soldier adamantly refused his deployment orders, saying Barack Obama wasn't born in America and therefore ineligible to be president and give military orders. The soldier claimed there was "significant evidence" Obama wasn't born in Hawaii.

"Birther" outburst – Here, a "birther" only dubbed as "The Interrupter" cries out during the congressional reading of the constitution, earning her a place on the Ridiculist.

What's the next issue for "birthers"? – You guessed it, President Obama's grades. Anderson Cooper digs in with info about the president's education, but we're guessing the next documents to be unearthed will be his report cards.

The birther issue is God's gift to Obama's 2012 re-election. Thanks for the Republican circus. You couldn't have done a better job for the Democrats even if you were working for the Obama for President 2012 committee.

      Alas, the terrorists have won.

Racism is alive and well in America. I disagree with the White House's decision to release the Certificate of Live Birth. There was no legal requirement to do so. Mr. Obama, however has a country to run, I defer to his better judgement. What I expect to now follow is these same racist 'birther's' will, in the well worn tradition of the right, detour to some other assinine talking point. This is a new low in American politics.

Yep. Traditionally, the Dems have had a knack for taking a sure victory and turning it into a last-minute defeat (anybody remember the 2000 and 2004 elections?). I think even they would be hard-pressed to screw things up enough to blow this one.

Unfortunately, a new wave of hard-core birthers will emerge and discount the certificate as a fraud. Sadly, I believe these people are hard-wired to not accept a president that does not look like them. It is now an industry to them.

Or maybe, the issue has been resolved and no serious competing candidate has to touch it when the election rolls around. This enables the GOP to distance itself from this stupidity. Barry would have been better served to let this fester while the morons worked themselves into a lather for the next 16 months. Doesn't matter, Obama still gets crushed in the next election.

I want to know why President Obama is the ONLY President who hads to submit a birth certifcate? No one said a word during the 2004 campaign about Sen Mccain being born in Panama. Is it because President Obama's skin is BLACK? This country needs to confront the "elephant in the room" that is racism. Birthers are showing signs of bigotry. The Republicans are making it easy for Democrays in 2012. Let's stop the ignorance.

Even though she or other white Americans were born here (with due respect to non racists/bigots) who is really American; or do these people forget their fore-parents came from Europe like blacks are from Africa? Someone better notify these birthers that they can't and don't own America alone. America is made up of almost all peoples of the world-a nation of migrants, right? So who is afraid of the first black president of the U.S of A; are they terrified by his outstanding abilities?

Yes, racism is a factor, but it is also about white supremacy, especially, on the part of people like Donald Trump. They can see you as being a decent person, but without the intellect and abilities of a white person. So, it really does not matter how smart President Obama is, people like Donald Trump will never think of him on their level, because he is not white. How dare Mr. Obama think he can actually be president! Though racism plays a part, white supremacy play a greater part.

@dad: our President's eligibility to be POTUS was verified in 2008. He was born in Hawaii and the legal form of his birth certificate was made public since then. Therefore, he was a 'natural born' citizen. That should have been the end of the story.

Why wasn't it? There is not other reason besides race. Give me another reason that hasn't been disproved many times over. I will bet you can't. Show me proof Obama was born in Kenya. Proof, not that snippit out of an interview with his grandmother that was taken out of context. Real proof like a Kenyan birth certificate or official witnesses. I will bet you can't.

Racism is alive and well just as in the days when blacks were treated as a lesser form of human being. What you're seeing with all this rage in the form of the "tea party", and the "birther movement" is what white supremacists are relegated to now that media outlets won't allow them to do what they used to do in the south...get a rope and lynch "blackie". Well, blackie isn't serving your tea, or plowing your fields anymore. He's not saying "yessuh master" anymore. He's giving the orders and some people have gone absolutely crazy accepting that!

Robert, you've hit the nail right on the head. Either the "Birthers" are upset because president Obama is Black or he is of mixed parentage. I suspect it is a whole lot of both. I can't recall this kind of blatant intolerance since President Kennedy was elected in 1960. Then, it was a phobia about Catholics. Now it is the resurgence of the old phobia of having somebody who isn't white in charge of anything besides the kitchen or janitor's closet.

George W Bush was white and he was incompetent and was a horrible president, I have not seen any great CHANGE from the Obama administration, His failure to produce his birth certificate until now was just another calculated smoke screen a way to deflect the American public from the current administrations lack luster job performance. The only real CHANGE we have haD is higher prices, lower wages, higher unemployment. If that is the CHANGE you want then you have it. Obama spent 750 million dollars on his election now his campaign is bragging that they will raise 1 billion dollars in 2012. I feel sorry for the United States but even if Obama is elected the damage is already done we can thank the politicians of the past 2 decades for the Patriot act something that was never needed but it gave the government more control. As long as we continue to squabble over the nonsensical items such as Obama's birth certificate we deserve to reap the lost of our freedom.
