Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

Is everything racist these days? Obama could come out and say, "I lied. I wasn't born in the U.S," and that would be racist of the other side. Birther nut-jobs, I have no problem with that, but stop with the race card.

This birther thing shows how some Americans think. I believe the President of USA is one of the most respected figures in the World Politics. Am sure that Trump is well aware that he will never beat Obama in either debate or polls. Trump and his followers should conceive the defeat and apologize to the President and the entire nation for this shameful and regrettable incident. Obama and US citizens deserve more...

@DwayneL – I'm pretty sure everyone posting here has been able to tell where you're coming from by now. It's okay. I know you wish it in your heart of hearts, but replying with the same stuff to every post just won't make it true.

@DwayneL: No, you are the joke. You have no idea what most of the country wants, I imagine becuase you get all your news from FAUX News channel, and are incapable of seeing the progress that has been made because you are blinded by partisanship. You and your ilk can scream from the mountain tops that Obama is the worst president ever but that doesn't make it true and makes you look like the partisan fool you really are. And a hypocrite becuase you insist on holding him to a standard you don't expect of othet politician.

At the very least this should show that birthers really have nothing significant to say. At all. And that they are indeed racist–hear any of these airheads call for Clinton's, Carter's, Kennedy's, etc. birth certificates? No, wait- many -republicans had a few atoms of intelligence then.

To those birthers, including Donald trump – all I can say is that you all need to go back to elementary school to re-learn your geography lessons, and learn that Hawaii is one (state) of the united states of america. Hawaii is not a foreign country, even though it is situated thousands of miles away in the middle of pacific ocean.

You really are lost in your own world aren't you? I don't like McCain but he had two American citizens as parents, was born to them while deployed on military assignment. If you want to question if he is a natural born citizen then I guess you question every single serviceman and woman and every child of a US diplomat born overseas. Talk about blinded by ideology.

Anyone who's ever been a government employee would know that even a cursory background check would have disqualified Obama from running for president very early on if he wasn't born in the U.S. Now if there had only been a background check in place to disqualify "worst president ever" candidates...

Okay, now its official that Obama's father was a muslim foreigner and his mother was an atheist white-man hater teen that got popped her first year in college by the funny sounding ugly guy. But where is the "Birth Certificate"? This is a "certificate of live birth" that is manufacturer by $50 printers and sold on the streets of America to illegal immigrants. Where are his identifying baby "footprints"?

The real foolishness here is that the President could have squashed this whole birther nonsense 2.5 years ago with the exact same letter. Instead he let it drag on and on for whatever advantage he thought he could get out of it. This from the man who said he would have the most transparent administration ever.

Go get a copy of your own "birth certificate". It will say the same thing. I remember signing my own childrens' birth records at the hospital, after the information was taken and typed by the recorder clerk. So yes, you have handwriting on a real "birth certificate".

President Obama provided what any other person born in Hawaii would have provided. It is not his responsibility to appease people who are now blaming "him" for not stopping this nonsense. Get a grip, JJ

Trumped – If you are running a business and some of the folks who work for you and/or some of your clients have a question about you then you deal with that as quickly as possible. The President said himself this was a distraction, that means for the last 2.5 years it has been interfering with him doing the best job he could...that's what distractions do. There is no legal requirement for him to produce anything like this, but if you are a leader you deal with the issues which negatively affect your work and the work of those around you. How many hours or days worth of time have been spent denying this birther nonsense that could have been totally eliminated by take that extra step of writing a simple letter? I've been ticked off for over 2 years that he hasn't simply ended this garbage and now he acts like suddenly it needs to be dealt with.

Yeah guys, the president said STOP... so you should all stop.
and this is no ordinary President, this according to some on these postings say he is the greatest president ever.

On that last point I can only conclude those people have very limited life experience, brain capacity, and educational opportunities that do not allow them to process the truly great presidents we have had in the past. So far the first 4 years will yield a president who will be regarded as middle of the pack (i.e. not exceptional in leadership, abilities or policies) – he will mainly be known for being the first black president.
