Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

For anyone who says he should have done this a while ago is wrong. I wish he had not done it! Let them waste their money looking for the truth. You can't stop stupid. Stupid is as stupid does!

It is true. You cannot stop stupid people and their stupidity. People should answer the stupidity with another stupidity. President should have shown a fake birth certificate with photoshoped umbilical code punched on it. We can wake up those who are really asleep. Cannot really wake up those who act as if "sleeping".

So why did it take him so long to finally come up with it? This shoulda/coulda been resolved weeks/months/years ago. Honetly though, doesn't it make you wonder why now? What has changed? Was Trump gaining too much of a following?

He EXPLAINED why in his speech. People were getting so ridiculous about this in the past few weeks (thanks to Trump being a moron mostly) that it was distracting from REAL issues that are much more pressing and important. To get people to shut up he finally did what he shouldn't have had to do in the first place! It's so embarrassing that this is even an ISSUE in the USA in the first place!

Well, now we know how long it takes a "birther" to gnaw through the restraints... not long at all.

Somebody sneezes and somebody else cries "racism". Let's be honest, the folks who are crying "racism" at every turn are part of the problem here. About 25% of claims of racism are probably true, the rest are cop outs for not being able to participate in a conversation with someone who has a differing opinion.

It's so funny that now they're acting as if the President is using this as a distraction from the real issues. Talk about re-writing history. That's practically all they've talked about instead of the country's problems.

What do you expect from a country where half the citizens think that a dead jewish terrorist came back to life two thousand year ago and is god?

I truly love, value and respect the freedom that this great nation has. However I was puzzled by the Republican Party for insisting on Obama' s original birth certificate. Either they don't accept Hawaii as a State or its officials are not truthful. I use to like Donald Trump for three reasons: he is an American success story, he attached his name in good buildings nad he has always been a good self-promoter. Now I dislike him for three reasons: he lied on CNN, he had the guts to question President Obama's educational attainments and he has continued to rob our seniors out of their limited incomes with his casinos.

Obama is outright disingenuous.... he just makes it sound nice because he is eloquent. Trump may outright lie but he is more like the neighborhood bully. Obama likes to take credit for the unemployment rate from 10 down to 9 and now at around 8.8%..... what he won't tell you and most people don't know is that each month several hundred thousand Americans lose their unemployment benefits and once you no longer receive a check – magically – you are no longer considered unemployment.

There had to be some sort of debate about extending unemployment benefits to people that have actually worked (otherwise they would not have been eligible for benefits) but Obama's entire agenda is to transfer as many resources as humanly possible to people that have never worked, likely will never work, and have no intention of ever working because they somehow have been wronged. I hear ads for someone promoting this event or that event for "at risk kids", hey I have a great idea – stop making at risk kids.

It puzzles me that this has NEVER EVER been a issue for any other POTUS. So I ask you, " What is the difference between this President and any other"?...........We all know the answer to that. If I were President I wouldn't have shown those racist, bigots and especially the DONALD. I wish MY PRESIDENT wasn't so willing to compromise so much. To hell with them.

This could all have been avoided if the media (like you CNN) didn't give precedence on this issue which, shouldn't have even been an issue. You and other television channels should have known better . . . that you have wasted so much air time just to give the Donald an ego bigger than himself.

There are so many other news worth air space. Pu-leeze! Why give it to the Donald when you know his intent is to hurt our President's image? I can say one thing . . . Donald's money doesn't mean a damn thing. So, put this all to rest and STOP this nonsense!

You, CNN, and the rest of the media should focus and put your priorities where it belongs . . . on respectable, worthy, and credible topics that deserve the attention of the American public. Your focus on Donald's tantrums doesn't help matters in any way.

Knock it off and put your camera lenses and recording on issues that are WORTH talking about. Trash Donald where he belongs – in the TRASH bin.

Well, from the begining barak has referenced many times his kenyan heritage, his admiration for Islam, so it seems some of this was not without provocation. no matter, no president can singlehandedly "fix" America's problems, but we certainly could gladly say goodbye to this rediculous distraction so he can focus on are decaying country.
    God Bless America!

Seriously who cares where he was born? Is this really what this countries top priority should be right now?! REALLY?! Missing and exploited people. Hunger, War, Disease, Inflation, Poverty, Education.... don't worry everyone... it'll all be okay now... WE HAVE THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE!!! The skies will clear, the tornadoes will end and peace will rain down on everyone now that we've cleared that mystery up!!! I swear if we would all stop snipping at each other's heels and actually focus on some serious issues, we'd be #1 again!
