Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

See, if his birth certificate is real, then people who disbelieve must have been fooled. People don't like admitting that, especially since they have been squealing that Obama 'fooled the Democrats' since he was elected. So they will go on believing in their own cleverness.

Then you need to try reading some of the comments posted to stories like the one last easter where racial comments were left inside plastic eggs and thrown onto people's lawns. There were a lot of these non-existant racists posting comments then.

These Teapublican "birthers" probably believe the earth is flat, the moon is made of green cheese and Sarah Palin had virgin births. 2011 and such ignorance and stupidity still exists. I guess human evolution still has a long, a very long way to go till the species becomes human.

Who was the last conservative political candidate (or in this case conservative with hopeless political ambitions) that did not take advantage of the media's obsession with sensationalism to distract the public from issues that actually matter?

  7. WHY

Not one of you Obama backers had an ounce of proof until today. It took Donald Trump to force his hand and to make this information come to light. NOT ONE -- NOT ONE of you had an OUNCE of proof until today yet you wanted us to beleive when you yourselves had no POSSIBLE way of knowing. Obama did it only because he knows he wouldn't get away with it twice. And now neither will anyone else.

All of your statements are wrong. There has been lots and lots of proof provided to date. Testimony from neighbors and people who worked at the hospital. His certificate of live birth has been on the internet for two years. There are newspaper articles announcing his birth. Lots and lots of proof so far. And what do you think he got away with? Also – chew on this: Even if he were born in Kenya, he is still a U.S. citizen. His mother was a U.S. citizen, and the instant he was born – he was a "natural born citizen" of the U.S. – anywhere on the planet.

THE SAD PART IS THAT YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING! Obamacare (like the ring of it) would likely help with your mental health as well.

The really sad part of this is that in an odd way the mouth breathing birthers are living proof that evolution is a lie.

while I don't think this will satisfy the "birthers", becuase the associated letter from the Hawaii DOH says it is a "computer generated" copy, if it was this easy to provide then WHY DID HE ALLOW A 17 YEAR DECORATED ARMY VETERAN GET COURT MARTIALED AND GO TO PRISON FOR QUESTIONING IT!!! He could have easily, it appears, provided it and that decorated vet would have dropped the question and done his duty as he always had. Obama has a serious lack of respect and honor for our armed forces. They are the very reason this country has remained a leader in the world, and defended freedoms that provided the opportunity for him to aspire to the position he now holds! If he doesn't give that man his life/career back(pardon and expunge) he has no honor in my book!

SERIOUSLY Viper? Listen to yourself...Why did he allow the decorated vet to get court martialed? The decorated Vet dishonored his own record, the military and the Commander-In-Chief by not following orders. PERIOD. He was foolish enough to put himself in such a position. The President had no legal or moral obligation to 'save' this guy from the consequences of HIS OWN actions....Don't try to put that off on Pres. Obama.

First of all the army veteran didn't have to go that extreme. There was plenty of proof of Obama's birth. That man was a disgrace to the military and a nut job. He should have gone to a mental hospital. He deserved to be court martialed and to go to prison.

You are unamerican and bluntly you are a racist!

Inspite of reports to the contrary there is no connection between the pressure applied by the Donald and BOs decision to release the birth certificate. Gotta love it!

I hope Hillary and her left-wing conspiratists are happy now! How dare she suggest that Obama was not born in this country. She obviously harbors racist feelings towards anyone who is not the same color as her. People like her will never be happy that a black man is president. Thank goodness the Republicans have people like Michael Steele and Allen West! The Tea Party is proud to support these fine Americans! So much for you race-carders! Obviously the left have their fair share of intellectually deficient as is evidenced by most of the posts here.

Oh please! #1) I actually don't doubt that Hillary does harbor some of those feelings. I haven't forgotten the "Hard working white folks" comment. But at least she has enough sense not to be so overt with her prejudices and knows how to show respect for the POTUS even if inside she can't stand him and #2) Big whoop, You can name 2, maybe 5 or 6 black Republicans. Can you name more than 10 without looking them up? How many do you know personally? Yeah right. So don't give us the few tokens that the Republicans love to parade around. They don't impress.

Oh – you mean like Jeremiah Wright, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the New Black Panthers and Louis Farrakhan? Colonel West has more time using the latrine than Maobama has in elected office. Always keep the race card handy – you pathetic liberals never hesitate to use it at your leisure. If West gets the Republican nomination, what happens to your race-baiting then? Oh right – he's just an Uncle Tom. The scripts already written.

I personally don't like any of those that you named? And yes they are racists. But what does that have to do with the birther argument and Barack Obama? SQUAT! If you can't see that the Republican party is devoid of any substantive racial diversity then you are blind. And I know this goes against your ingrained thoughts about minorities that support Democrats, but the other 95% percent of us are not simply clueless or brainwashed and Allen West and the other few black Republicans are the only enlightened ones among us. Could it be that they do have an agenda to be viewed as the enlightened ones among their white peers? The reason that this phenomenon has a name "Uncle Tom" is because this type of behavior has been manifest since before the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was even written and it continues today. You may want to deny the fact that such a mentality exists, but that doesn't make it non-existent.

Americans should realize that you have the best man to get you out of the mess left by your last administration. Get behind him and work with him. Better still, come and have a vacation in my country, Canada, and see how a caring society should be. Stop seeing every country in the world as a potential enemy, and see them as potential friends instead.

CNN, you should stop calling them "doubters" and call them what they really are: Obama bashers ( or haters ). The majority of the people pushing this story don't really have any doubt about the fact of Obama's birth in Hawaii; they just use this story to 1) manipulate extremely ignorant people; 2) make Obama look bad by having to lower himself to respond to this nonsense; 3) take attention away from important issues.
