Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

    Hey, George Patton:

    1) Take your medications

    2) Adjust your tinfoil hat

    3) Acknowledge the mental illness that makes you come up with such idiocy in public.

Well seeing how everyone wants to talk about the stupid race game. My question is when do the whites and hispanics start an uproar about the % the NBA being black compared to the whites and hispanics, how bout the NFL, and as for this birth certificate bs, bs is exactly what it is. MY problem with this is to get a drivers license I had to show my birth certificate, to get my job I had to as well. This is exactly why I say this is BS. IF he had one he should have had it a LONG time ago. Im out

Dude, you don't think the government checks out people running for president BEFORE they are allowed on the ballot? Besides, in the long line of presidents of the United States, none of them, until now, have been forced to publicly produce a birth certificate. I wonder why that is? Reading through the first part of your post provides some interesting clues.

You gullible people, I feel sorry for you. His BC is a fake. The name of the hospital listed wasn't even in business at the time of his birth. He was born in '61, the name change wasn't til '78 when hospitals merged. Check it out by researching the name of the hospital on the 'certificate'. His forger should have gotten his facts straight before penning the fakery. Also, if he was an americna citizen, what was he doing accepting a scholarship for a foreign student?

So many incorrect facts, where to start? He did not have a scholarship for foreign students, the hospital name is correct for the time of his birth, and his long form BC is not a forgery. Just because you really, really believe something Sue, does not make it correct.

I am listening to Republican morons still going on about some new issue with the Birth Certificate now. It seems even if the President was born in US, since his father was not a citizen the President is not natural born?
Wow! Republican cons would have loved the President if he had said "Yes Sir" to everything they wanted to do. I see that an African American is good only when he says Yes to everything the Master says. Or an African American should not be the highest citizen in the country? Racism pure and simple. I guess the country has 25% – 40% racists, I guess all in Republican conjobs.

I think there should be an investigation as to where Trump's hair line begins and if he was born on this planet.

Isn't this the same as when everybody was after Bush and his military record and the Republicans said he had nothing to prove. It seems people like Bush Limbaugh tend to forget this and use whatever helps their ratings rise as they see fit.

It amazes me how much bashing, back and forth is going on in these comments. Doesn't everyone realize this is what the government wants? After all, if Barack didn't want the publicity he could have shown his birth certificate back when he was running, when the issue of his credibility was first brought up and this wouldn't be happening right now. What is the big deal? I have had to show my birth certificate in the past for legitimate reasons. Is it such a big deal for a person who is about to run our country to show theirs? What people fail to realize is this is just a ploy to distract people from the serious issues that are going on behind closed doors. Let America worry about Barack's birth certificate and Donald Trump while the rights of hard working American's continue to be taken away. It does not matter what party Americans vote in favor of, republicans and democrats are all equally corrupt. It doesn't matter who you vote for, your making no difference. A real change will come when Americans vote in a new party that is not tied to the disgrace of our current administration or those before him.

No, Michael...you have *never* had to show your "original" birth certificate *or* your "long form" birth certificate. You have only had to provide a certified COPY of your birth certificate in whatever form the state you were born in provides.

  12. really?

As a conservative, I am ashamed how some people lack the intelligence and thinking that stirring up a conspiracy theory versus discussing a real issue is more important. What’s next, will these idiots now question if President Obama is really black. Let’s just call it what it is: simple racism at its worse.

Im just so stunned that these people actually think that our massive government is capable of some huge 50-year old conspiracy that schemed and plotted to have a particular baby's records be doctored in the event that this baby grew up to be president. What?!
