Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

Thank goodness Obama finally showed the birth certificate. Obama says he has no time for this silliness. Well, Obama was the one being silly. What is the big deal about showing your birth certificate? How silly is that!

Why is it that this is the one and only time this issue has ever been brought up in the history of our country ? It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that this the first time we've had a person of color in the white house, could it ?

This birth certificate means absolutely nothing. In HI, the Certificate of Live Birth is the "prima facia of fact of birth". By denying Obama's American citizenship you are, in fact, denying all HI citizens American citizenship. I guess now we should start denying all of HI the right to vote in federal elections!!

All I want is for Trump to admit he lied, release his tax records as he promised. And before he questions Obama's academic achievements, he should be compelled to release his own academic records. Otherwise, he can take a long walk off a short pier. He symbolizes everything that is wrong about this country.

A real birth certificate is handwritten? Where? Every birth certificate I have even seen has been typed.

That was my thought, too ... since when are birth certificates hand-written? The folks who cling to the lie that President Obama wasn't born here and is "illegitimate," are the same folks who in their personal, and probably professional, lives completely incapable of handling any kind of truth they don't like. That kind of mental illness/immaturity is fear-based and enables all sorts of destructive behavior like alcoholism, racism, lying, blaming others for your own faults, etc.

      Pretty darn pathetic!

Real birth certificates are typed. This isn't even a good fake. We have an illegal presidency, people! Obama needs to be indicted, Boehner needs to take over as interim President while Obama-Biden are brought to trial for this fraud. We need a legitimate government people! This is bigger than Whitewater and Watergate combined. We need to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate this.

It is just sad to see how many unintelligent people we have in the US. People you are making a fool of us to the rest of the world!! Well, I guess you like being a fool. Birther's, tea partyers are people who want to complain and not be part of the solution. Having a black President just burns inside you because you family probably own slaves and your do not look at what an accomplishment we have made to the world. Last time I check we have more people in this country that are not white. And yes I am white, but I look at people as human beings first. So, get off you high horse and help make this country move forward instead keeping us back.

So, your birth certificate was handwritten twenty years prior and in a different country. What, exactly, does that have to do with the President's birth certificate?

The Republicans failed to find an activist judge to beat down the right of the state of Hawaii to determine what records they consider legal and sufficient. Didn't they use to say they were against activist judges and for state's rights? I wish the President had let this go on.

Now that Trump has again found away to feed his ego, and now lost, surely he should do the honorable thing and ride off into the sunset never to be heard from ( or seen) again.
Let's focus on real presidentail candidates, not clowns like Trump
    From a Republican voter

these people asking "well, why didnt he show this in the first place when he was running for president?" he DID show his cert. of live birth which is considered a birth cert. in Hawaii. Do you really think he would have made it through the vetting process if they didnt think his cert of live birth was valid?? The man can 't win with you people. you're like "Show us the birth certificate!" he does and then you say "Ha ha see how we manipulated him?" now it's "Show us your grades!" jeez give it a rest.

It is so sad that this even needed to be done. If President Obama had not been a progressive (although, in my view barely progressive), black, male, this never would have had to happen. What has America come to that there is such disrespect for the office of the president?

There are those who will say "Why did he not do this before?"....my answer (screamed many times as I read the news) is that he is a busy man, taking care of many more important things than to have to teach to the lowest common denominator of our society. Have some respect, people!!!!

these commentors talking about this law that says presidents much show their ORIGINAL long form BC are full of it! that is NOT the law. the law says a computer generated certified copy is ok and is recognized by the department of the state! response from Mr. Fuddy regarding Obama's request for his long form BC:

"...Through that authority, in recognition of your status as President of the United States, I am making an exception to current departmental policy which is to issue a computer-generated certified copy."

I think maybe the real lesson from this is why didn't the President do this a long time ago and put this whole mess to rest when it first started? I never put much credibility into the "birther" movement, but President Obama kept the controversy alive by not shutting it down early and completely. There will always be whack jobs out there with conspiracy theories and such, but sometimes, if you can, you need to nip them in the bud quickly and cleanly. I applaud the President for taking this step to end the controversy but still ask, why did you wait so long?
The only answer I have is political expediency. He wanted to create a cadre of "birthers" who would come off as nut-jobs (read: Tea Party); then he could, at least on this issue, come off as the calm voice of reason and maturity (read: Democrat). Silly politics that could have been avoided early and quickly. The president did this country a great disservice by allowing this to continue as long as it did. Just another example of why partisan politics in this country have ruined our legacy as a legitimate and freedom-loving world power.

A true leader would have handled this issue 3 years ago because it was of concern to some citizens. Instead, millions of taxpaper dollars have been wasted. This should not have been issue; the birth certificate should have been released and the president then moved on to very important problems of our country. We need leaders that lead, not people that play political games. While everyone is calling each other names, our country has gone bankrupt, our school system destroyed, we are oil dependent on countries that hate us, and China owns us. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. GET OVER YOUR PERSONAL POLITICAL AGENDA – THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS AND NEITHER PARTY HAS ANYTHING TO BRAG ABOUT.

Exactly how were "millions of taxpayer dollars wasted?" Obama even handled getting the long form BC released through his private counsel. The waste here was generated entirely by a cadre of idiots and mentally unstable clowns who probably still believe the world is flat. God help us!
