Widow 'overwhelmed' by news that husband delivered baby Obama

The widow of the doctor whose signature is on President Obama's birth certificate was honored to learn of her husband's role in bringing the future president into the world and hoped the document would end debate over his citizenship.

"It is a great thrill and a great honor and I had no idea," Ivalee Sinclair, an Obama supporter, said Wednesday in a phone interview from her home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"I was just overwhelmed with the news."

David Sinclair's name appears as the attending physician on the live birth certificate that the White House released Wednesday in response to doubts over his citizenship. The "birther debate" has waxed and waned since Obama's presidential campaign, returning with renewed vigor last week due in large part to the efforts of billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump.

According to the document, Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in the Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu, where David Sinclair spent most of his career delivering around 10,000 babies, his wife said.

Sinclair served in World War II as a fighter pilot before going to medical school and embarking on a decades-long career as a respected physician.

"I just know he loved what he was doing and he had a wonderful rapport with his patients," Ivalee Sinclair said. "When he passed away, many called to share funny stories that he'd shared with them, to tell me they'd named children after him or other such honors, so I know he was dearly loved by his patients."

Ivalee Sinclair said she hoped the birth certificate would put the matter to rest and echoed President Obama's remarks that the country had "better stuff to do."

"I think President Obama was correct when he said it was a distraction that takes away from the real issues and we have huge, huge real issues that our country is facing," she said. "We need people to work together not at one another’s throats."

She said she didn't think her husband knew of his connection to the president because he died in 2003, before Obama announced his candidacy. But if he did, he never mentioned it.

"Physicians honor the confidentiality of their patients so he never said anything to me about this, and at that time, we had no way of knowing that President Obama was going to be president," she said.

Debate?! It proves his father is not a citizen of the united states thereby precluding him from becoming President. I know, annoying little laws that are easily bypassed by someone with a law degree that has a complete disregard for all things written down into law. If George Bush's Dad was a citizen of Sweden, CNN would have certainly ensured he did not run for President. Freedom of the press is a joke!

But his mother is an American Citizen. So then he is also an American Citizen. So it wouldn't matter if he was born on the moon. That's the law. Look it up.

I'm just gonna paste this point to all of the idiots who claim his father precludes him from being president.

You know that being 'natural born' only requires that HE (Obama) himself is born in the US and has nothing to do with his father right? So the question is whether Obama was born here. The fact that his father was born outside the U.S. has nothing to do with it. He gains citizenship through his mother, and whether he is NATURAL BORN or NATURALIZED depends on whether he was born in Hawaii or Kenya. So shut up about the father, that part is irrelevant.

Wow, that is completely ignorant. With a mother who is a US citizen, he's a US citizen by default. By being born on US soil, even if neither parent were citizens, or even here legally, he'd be a natural-born US citizen. By being born here, and being born to a mother who is a US citizen, he's a natural born citizen.

No wonder it's a "controversy" – those who don't believe don't know what they're talking about. But we already knew that.

I support Pres. Obama and I hope Donald Trump does run for president. The way I see it the more republicans run for office the higher the likely hood that among all the bad options that the republicans MIGHT offer there is a good chance that the worse will win. Which means that the vote will be split. Everybody knows that THE Donald is a horrible horrible option but and would trust him to balance a grocery receipt but right now he is riding high in the polls. That means split vote among the repubs. I just want some one in office that is going to fix the mess that was left by the last 43 presidents. LOL

Everybody is now going on about his father being listed as african. So What!!!! Guess what if at least one parent was born in the U.S. guess what? He is a U.S. citizen!!!! Idiots, if this offends you, then I am probably talking to you. Also, if he was born in the U.S., Hawaii is a U.S. state even though it the youngest, guess what??? That makes him a U.S. citizen. Morons why not use your time more wisely, and think of ways to save money, help decrease your own dependency on foreign oil. Get a hobby. something

    • Are You Serious

After all the hard work you put into your ramblings you still don't have a clue. He may be a US citizen (I use that term lightly) as you so diligently pointed out with one parent being US Born but in order to be the President you must be a Natural Born citizen. I will slow down here so you can catch up............ His father was not born in the US. So Obama is not a natural born citizen. So by your own ramblings you just proved yourself to be an idiot.

I will type real slow so you can follow. He was born on American soil, so no matter what nationality either of his parents are, he is a NATURAL BORN citizen. Also, his mother was an American citizen, so he gets his citizenship from her. He was NEVER recognized as a citizen of Kenya or any other country. He has NEVER had dual citizenship. The only country he has EVER been a citizen of is America. Did you get that?!

President Chester Arthur's father was Irish. Born in Ireland. A citizen of Ireland living in the US when Arthur was born.

Romney's dad was the repug candidate in 1968. He was born in Mexico.

Only *one* of your parents has to be American, and it doesn't matter where you are born, to be a natural born American.

It never ceases to amaze me how these republican illiterates will proudly *announce* their ignorant view loudly and thump and beat their chests in pride at their own ignorance and illiteracy.

It takes a peculiar kind of stupidity to do that. Mr. Are you serious here has this quality though.

What a pity to realize that people use this oportunity to make comments in order to say negative things and try to make the others looks like fools, why don't we try to make constructive comments instead of degrading the others, that is why this world is how it is today, the human race have lost perspective on what it is that we are doing in this world, hope is vanishing by the day.

My 2 cents – President Obama inherited a country already in recession thanks to President Bush who went with guns blazing into a war that was not ours to fight in the place. EDUCATED Americans understand the situation perfectly and we continue to work hard to eke out a living instead of blaming our President. Its the UNEDUCATED hot heads who – instead of rolling up their sleeves try to hurl the blame elsewhere. Grow up people, take responsibility for your own actions instead of blaming everyone else around you. 🙂

      Trish, right on.
Obama had a terrible situation to try and handle. I wish people could really recognize how much worse it would have been if he hadn;'t pushed for the funds and if he had not helped the major automobile manufactureers. Thre wre some Republican Congressment who wanted to let GM fail, can you imagine. That would have been catastrophic. So thanks to Obama snd the Congress and some Repubs GM did not fail the economy did not fail... It was on life support partly because the Republicans had a stranglehold on the stimulus and wouldn't let it go out and pass it. Finally it did and the unemployment was about 12% by then., Obviously not Obama;'s fault. GM paid every nickel back, made a huge profit hired a bunch of people. About 200,000 new jobs in the last quarter, the GDP is up... lots of growth sjust starting to happen. I really pray Obama gets anothe term and we get more green energy and more infrastructure projects going which will generate jobs... we need that so much. I wish people in general would recognize how things sre getting better. Anyway Trsish thank you for your comment.

I don't think President Obama is an idiot, the poster may be one though. But at least he could put together an coherent post, albeit one a rude one. However, YOU are definitely an idiot and just need to sit down and be quiet.

the ONLY thing you need to know about birthers, in case you had a doubt that they were in fact, closet-racists... is that nobody questioned John McCain's eligibility to run for president. WHY? because he was a white, jowl-y, old, rich man which is who we are USED to seeing in the white house. But GUESS WHAT!, John Mccain was born in PANAMA, which last time I checked was not the UNITED STATES. (it is US territory, but a sovereign nation in its own right)

there are 2 rules regarding citizenship and presidency-eligibility, and they are DIFFERENT but similar, hence why people are so often confused:

the first rule relates to being a CITIZEN (ie: if either your parents are US citizens then you are a citizen, no matter where you were born. If you were born in the US, EVEN if NEITHER of your parents are citizens, then you are a US citizen–> 14th amendment). so john mccain would have been a US citizen when born in Panama.

HOWEVER, the second rule relates to presidency eligibility which ONLY STATES very clearly, that to be president, you must be 35years of age, a US citizen, AND have been BORN ON UNITED STATES SOIL. that ABSOLUTELY prevents John McCain from running for president. Obama was born in HAWAII, and guess what, he also has darker skin than McCain, so where did this birther issue come from, when they turned a blind eye to McCain?
