Court lifts ban on federal funding for stem cell research

A federal court has given the Obama administration the go-ahead to continue embryonic stem cell research.

The controversial 2-1 decision Friday is a victory for supporters of federally funded testing for a range of diseases and illnesses.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia lifted an injunction imposed last year by a federal judge, who said all embryonic stem cell research at the National Institutes of Health amounted to destruction of embryos, in violation of congressional spending laws.

The case is Sherley v. Sebelius (10-5287).

You just announced on the air that this decision was "a blow to the administration". That's exactly backwards! The administration's case was UPHELD by this decision. Please issue an immediate correction.

This was. Good idea I don't think it's right to censor or print the human mind from developing possibility if we can dream it and put it into action and the resources are available no one should stop us, unless it's a threat to mankind.

awesome, especially considering there are multiple ways to get stem cells without destroying the embryo, this is going to help the future of humanity.

It took you 13 minutes to correctly report on this story, after totally botching it on air. But I think you should also state, clearly, that your earlier report was incorrect and offer your viewers an apology. A responsible news organization will point out their errors and correct them, not pretend they never happened.

Obama is in favor of the culture of death. The administration fought to force American tax dollars to fund research to destroy human embryos for their stem cells. This research with human stem cells is of no merit...a evil means to an end this isn't justifed because you have parkinson. Adult stem cells have been shown to be of benefit...so you can achieve the same end without killing human babies....shame on you baby killer Obama!

Where have you been, exactly? Embryonic stem cells are a thing of the past. Stem cells for research today are coming from the umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, bone marrow, and a variety of other sources. Embryos are essentially not even used anymore, given the wide variety of other sources.
Please inform yourself before posting a decade-old now invalid argument.

Science always moves forward. This research will be done and better it be done by those who will then be in a position to have a say in the ethics of it all. If God knows that an embryo will be used for research, then God won't bother "zapping" a soul into those cells. Right? He knows all, right?

Yes liar, you are twisting the facts, when you kill an embryo, living human for its cells it is called a culture of death. You justify this by saying you're saving a person's life...but you refuse saving the embryo's life and are blatant in your disregard for the embryonic person. You also lie that the embryo cells cure, when it is well known in the scientific community, these cells cause tumors and cancers and of no benefit. There is nothing praiseworthy or glorious about being a baby killer

It ir really IGNORANT of you to call someone a liar without FACTS. If there was concensus that stem cells don't work, this wouldn't be an issue. Calling a microscopic bunch of cells a "person" is pure fantasy. It has no brain, no knowledge, no personality, no heart, no circulation, no breathing. Spend more time getting an education before mindlessly calling people liars.

Baby embryos are worthless to me or anyone with a disease, so if they could help cure diseases, more power to it! A sperm and an egg is NOT a baby. If it don't breath AIR it's not human! I'm completely and totally disgusted that you would say that NM's comment was "religious nonsense" nowhere in that comment did NM say anything about religion. Just because a person believes that life begins at conception does not mean that they are trying to push religion on others by stating their opinion. I agree with NM that the comment by Skolo is rather heartless and inappropriate. there are better ways to word one's opinion so that it does not offend so brazenly.

I don't understand how a court can mandate federal spending. I believe that is congress's domain. If the government doesn't want to fund something, it doesn't. Would a suit against the government have standing for not funding NASA? The courts are overstepping their boundries!

The court didn't "mandate" anything. They simply stuck down an earlier injunction that banned federal funding of research. You should read more carefully before making such false statements.

To me it's appalling that such funding of vital research was banned in the first place, this is a big step forward for all Americans...even those ignorant enough to oppose the research.
