How did bin Laden hide just yards from Pakistan military academy?

The compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces is located a bit more than 1,000 yards from a Pakistan Military Academy, raising some questions about how much information the Pakistan military may have had about his whereabouts.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, said during a press conference that the Pakistani army has "a lot of explaining to do."

"I think the Pakistani army and intelligence have a lot of questions to answer, given the location, the length of time and the apparent fact that this facility was actually built for bin Laden and its closeness to the central location of the Pakistani army," Levin said. "So I think the army and the intelligence of Pakistan have plenty of questions that they should be answering and hopefully they are being asked by the Pakistani government."

Abbottabad is home to Pakistan's equivalent of West Point - and the website of the Pakistani military even describes the PMA as "a short distance from Abbottabad" also noting "a fine straight road leads to PMA."

Levin said while he appreciated some of the remarks made by President Asif Ali Zardari, he expected that he would have talks with the military about what they knew.

"I do think that the Pakistani president's statement today was a very reassuring statement when he very specifically said that he thinks it is a great victory and that it's a success and he congratulates us on the success of the operation," he said.

But although Levin said he was "not necessarily suspicious" that Zardari or civilian leadership knew, he added, "I must tell you I hope (Zardari) ... will follow through and ask some very tough questions of his own military and his own intelligence. They have got a lot of explaining to do."

He was living there protected by the Pakistan ISI and military..Why in the world would he feel so confident to hide here in a house than in the caves in the moutains among his people..Here he knew he is protected by the Pakistan military !!! Common sense

In defecse of Bob, a mile is 5280 feet. 1/2 mile is 2640 feet. 1000 yards is 3000 feet. 1000 yards is 360 feet longer than 1/2 mile. I'm not sure what the low and high range of a "Tad" are, but I qould agree with Bob on the definition. I also agree that the 2 points in the picture appear to be a much farther distance than 1000 yards.

The US should have know something more was up when the country gave them aide money, and Pakistan was angree to be asked what the money would be used for. The money we gave them could have been used to build the compound for Osama. If we believe that the Pakistan leaders, in anyway, knew the location of Osama then that should be plenty of reason (as if they didn't already have enough reason) to pull our citizens out of there and bring them home! Osama is dead, our part is over!

Can we PLEASE stop pretending that Pakistan is anything but a JOKE? A nuclear armed joke, at that. This is an INTENSELY Muslim country. Who do you think, Mr. Levin, Pakistanis are likely to be more loyal to?

Pakistanis are fighting the terrorists for several reasons. One is because the terrorists are bombing and killing innocent civilians inside their own country. Second, the Pakistanis know that these terrorists are not Islamic; they are killing Muslims left and right and blowing up mosques. If you ever watched the Pakistani news channels, you'd see how loudly the politicians and religious leaders have been denouncing these criminals.

Sulayman, first of all you are an idiot to categorise only killers of Muslims as terrorist. Second of all, the whole damn world knows that pak military establishment is in the habit of aiding and funding terrorist whether in America or In Kashmir or in Mumbai. How else can you explain all the terror leaders making Pakistan their home. You guys have been saying all thru that Osama was not there, now, we find him bang in the middle of a Pakistani military establishement, you guys are still saying Dawood is not there and then a leading cricket player gives his son in marriage to Dawoods daughter, we'll find him and we'll kill him too.

Here in America, there are cases where potheads grow marijuana plants in the basement, on the same street as a police station. Should we conclude that the police have to be aware of it and therefore in on the plan? No, some things are just out of plain sight and people don't bother to look. The military academy teaches cadets, not peeps into yards of houses in the surrounding towns.

    • Are you kidding me?

Are you really comparing someone growing plants in a basement to the worlds most wanted man?? By the way he was hiding in a heavily fortified compound without internet or a phone line. That seems pretty obvious to me. Unless the pakistani army is full of idiots like you I can't imagine how they wouldn't know that Osama was there.

It is quite disturbing to know that the compund was so close to Pak Military school. However, we should not be painting the whole nation of Pakistan and its army with the same brush.

Pak army has lost over 3000 personnel in the tribal areas since the 9/11 attack. Pak has lost a large number of innocent civilains by the same alqaeda/talibans suicide bomers. Pak has also arrested and provided to US more than 600 alqaeda operatives to US over the past 6-7 years from the tribal reas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

This is one step in the right direction. I hope elements within the Military or intelligence that supported BinLaden are arrested and given the same treatment metted to Bin Laden.

Why do people assume the military school has any significance? It's meant to train students and cadets, not police local neighborhoods and figure out who's hiding inside buildings. You could live next door to the FBI building but they're probably not going to spy on you.

    • Are you kidding me?

Military bases and academies should be aware of their surroundings for security reasons. If you have a building full of the best and brightest that pakistan has to offer, and they still have no idea that he world's most wanted man lives next door, thats pretty embarrassing. Don't try to convince us that pakistanis are that stupid. Just admit that Osama was likely helped or conveniently ignored.

Again and again we are fed CRAP from our Leaders. "Pakistan is an Ally... We need to send more Aid".
Fact that Osama is caught few kms from Military Base proves that this is Crap.
Many strongly believe that another International Terrorist Dawood Ibrahim is also inside or next to a Military Camp.
Pakistan is a country of Liars and cannot be trusted.
US should take over this country to establish law and order and eliminate the Terror Camps which can surely create 100s of Bin Ladens!!! Working in Afghanistan is 1/2 the job, the other 1/2 is in Pakistan.

This is insane. Ten years, all our special ops, "intelligence networks" etc. etc. And we finally get the pig at his mansion compound right next to a Pakistan military academy? C'mon, this is a crock. I'm sure it is the pig they killed but getting him ten years later in Pakistan. Duh... I'm sure all these Pakistani's had no idea he was living there. I'm sure that he probably disguised himself when he went to the 7-eleven to buy smokes and a six pack. What a bunch of nonsense.

And we pour millions of $'s into Pakistan. This is pretty F"' for sure. Good timing though since Obama is going to start his re-election campaign.
