Overheard on CNN.com: Birth of 'deathers'

Comments of the Day:

“McCain is on Obama’s side.
The Navy SEALS are on his side.
Rudolph Giuliani is on his side.
President Bush acknowledges his accomplishment; so does Clinton.
High-ranking officials are on Obama’s side.
He must be telling the freaking truth.”–MRmailman

“A photo won't change people’s minds. There are thousands of photos documenting the Holocaust, and there are still those who deny it ever happened.”–Haemisch

'Deathers' take over where 'birthers' left off

Al Qaeda, in Web message, confirms bin Laden's death

Poll shows 3 percent now thinks Obama born abroad

Al Qaeda issued a statement Friday on jihadist forums confirming the death of its leader, Osama bin Laden, according to SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors militant messages. Meanwhile, “deathers” - those who don’t believe it - have largely replaced “birthers” on some forums.

CNN.com readers shared their views on recent events and their validity. Guest said, “Osama Bin Laden- coming to a beach near you!!!" CW2329 said, “The news will shut up idiots who doubt Osama is dead. Now they will come up with other idiotic comments. It will never end!!!”

jcvarvella said, “I wonder if Bush had killed bin Laden if there would be all this hullaballoo. Oh that's right, Bush is white! The Tea Party would have believed him, no doubt. Deathers, birthers, Tea Party: they are all the same!! History years from now will reflect on this period with wonder and humor!”

saranot said, “Why don't they just call themselves "Racist Haters" and show their true colors?" gupsphoo said, “Let's face it. These deathers aren't really complaining about the lack of evidence. They're simply complaining about Obama being the president.”

Simon666 replied, “He's not even my president." gupsphoo said, “Thanks, Simon, you proved my point.” Simon666 then said, “You're the racist. My wife is Ugandan and my children are mixed-color like Obama and still I'm not buying this crap.”

chaos1946 said, “At least Al Qaeda believes Osama is dead. Works for me.” vjoeking replied, “How do you know it is al Qaeda?” chaos1946 said, “How do you know you're you, vjoeking?”

frog812 said, “Conspiracy theorists with real thought-provoking material used to bring this stuff up. Now I just see America's mental imbalance shining out for the world to see. We need national therapy." sito1012 said, "After every 'victory' you have more enemies."

Cavan89 said, “Why does CNN give national publicity to these nut cases?” LivinginVA said, “Exactly. Every time there's a space shuttle launch, they don't do interviews with folks from the Flat Earth Society.”

Alleged rape, killing of gay rights campaigner sparks call for action

A 24-year-old who was stabbed to death in South Africa has been called a victim of “corrective rape.” Neighbors were reported to have heard her attackers asking her why she acted like a man and telling her, “We will take the lesbian out of you."

CNN.com readers were horrified by the story and offered corrections of their own. ifaponurmom said, “People who engage in 'corrective rape' need to be subjected to corrective castration.” savenola said, “Sounds like a case for 'corrective imprisonment' for these animals. They are rapists and murderers, plain and simple.” dembiscuits said, “I don't agree with the gay lifestyle, but this is just terrible.”

Quigly87 said, “This has nothing to do with being a lesbian, it has everything to do with an excuse to rape and murder. They justify themselves by saying it is to correct homosexuality, but in reality they are a pack of wild animals.” RAblackmail said, “After being raped, I don't know any lesbian that would say 'Oh gee, I guess I was wrong about men. That was truly the most enjoyable experience I have ever had.' "

prplkat said, “I was going to ask why no one called the police, but it sounds like the police are just as bad as the attackers, poor woman.” teremist said, “When a society deems any of its members as less human, it gives its implied approval of crimes against them. Those inclined to violence then feel justified in behaving criminally. I suspect that is the case here. Sadly you cannot 'civilize' the unwilling.”

American views could be contributing to such crimes, vsmit suggested, quoting a New York Times article about three American evangelical Christians, "widely discredited in the United States," who recently “arrived in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks about how homosexuals threaten Bible-based values and the traditional African family.“

PhDinNC said, "Let us not throw stones at South Africa or other Third World countries. Gays are still being killed right here in our so-called 'developed' America."

Where alcoholics can drink themselves to death

A “wet house” in St. Paul, Minnesota offers die-hard alcoholics a place to live while drinking. The facility, which receives funds from the state and is operated by Catholic Charities, operates on the theory that doing so is better for the surrounding communities and kinder to the active alcoholics.

Many CNN.com readers commended Abby C., who wrote: “As the adult child of an alcoholic I applaud St. Paul and those who have made this wet house possible. The idea that all alcoholics eventually will stop drinking when they "hit bottom” just isn't true. My mother has lost her job, her friends, and 99% of her family because of her drinking. She has stage 3 liver disease, mid-stage alcoholics’ dementia and a long list of other medical issues. She was recently hospitalized and sobered up as a consequence. When then asked by the doctor and mental health professionals if she wanted to stop drinking, she said, 'NO!' She is well aware of her health issues and knows that every sip is a nail in her coffin. So I have, in a sense, made her a wet house of her own. I make sure she does not drive and that her alcohol is brought to her. Just like some people with cancer can’t be cured, some people with alcoholism simply can’t beat the disease. Providing them with a safe setting to live out their final days is about the only thing we can do.”

PattyattySFV, a recovering alcoholic herself, said, “It's emotionally brutal to see your parent live like this. Sometimes accepting the situation like you have is better and I think braver too. My children had disowned me: if I wanted my family back I had to stop drinking. I did and my heart goes out to those who are so deep into the drink that they can't make that decision.”

Friend of Bill said that as an AA member, “it's hard for me to say that I agree with you, but in certain cases, you are right. I hope you can find the peace in yourself that has eluded your mother.”

Junior, a single father raising two young daughters while their mother struggles with alcoholism, said, “Brilliantly stated. You end all debate on this subject. I feel your pain and applaud your efforts." errix2000 said, “Thank you. You care without judgment. I admire you.”

Charlene Deaver said, “Abby, you are an awesome person. The world would be a better place if everyone had your compassion and understanding. You will never regret that you stood by your mom in her greatest time of need. Happy Mother’s Day to you and your mom.”

Just driving in society and being out you see so many individuals who are aggressive, self centered, cutting people off in lines, opening doors and on roads, what is going to right this off kilter mess, it's just getting worse with racism and just plain old hatred for anyone who doesn't think like they want. Blame, blame, blame, who will people blame next for what things which they have no connection to. America is dying from it's own hand it seems sometimes, the hand of delusional paranoia from a lot of it's own citizens. I guess the price of gas and the other economy pressures have finally worked to push us to the tipping point..................or past.

"Birth of deathers"...this must be a sick joke, who in their right mind would call our Navy Seals, President Obama a liar? Has to be coming from the radical right wing nuts in this country...yep, we all know them, and know who they are, and it is very hard for normal people to digest...just cannot take in all the hatred put out there by these type of people. Why are birthers, and now deathers (who I am sure are the same people) telling all these lies? Personally, I will vote for President Obama in 2012 vs. these birthers/deathers and their fear-mongering tactics. Never could stand people who go to extremes...can't trust them.
